I would have gone with something like ‘Diddy’s Slammin and Jammin with Banannins’
I would also like to point out the irony that we were talking about items the day before the professional item abuser showed up again.
I would say they’re similar is all. If we had the option to turn X-Factor off, there probably would be a similar split in the UMVC3 community. There would be X-Factor and non-X-Factor tournies. And X-factor may lead to upsets, but generally not when the skill level is wildly different. Seems a decent comparison.
Or how about online lag? That’s something random that we have no control over and yet here are online tournaments. Infact, the debate over items seems just to be that we can turn them off. X-Factor and lag people whine about but they play through, but because we can turn items off, we can staunchly refuse to use them. And that’s fine. But to say they aren’t competitive or they ruin competitions isn’t really fair to items.
A thought occurred to me though: Sakurai could totally troll the competitive by removing the option to turn items off. I wouldn’t put it past the man who gave us tripping.
It’s a fucking stupid discussion because it’s “OMG STOP NEUTERING THE DAMN GAME” (lol what) vs. “IT’S TOO RANDOM THAT’S NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO PLAY” (lol sure).
Anyway, for some actual discussion: I think it’s been mentioned before, but I’m really liking how the characters seem to be a lot more expressive.
Both extremes are clearly dumb. There is no middle ground. So lets just not play the game at all because both items on/items off are both super dumb. /sarcasm
Online lag is a byproduct of online play, it’s the only way to play online. It’s not a game mechanic. It’s just something we deal with because it’s that or nothing, trust me no one is turning lag on on purpose. X-Factor is more fair than items, it’s not random each player can use it once a match. How you draw a parallel between a one time power up everyone knows you’ll use mid match and things that fall from the sky at random is beyond me. It’s apples and oranges. Different kinds of X-Factor-esque mechanics have been in fighting games forever now, other games have had the option to turn more things off/on and it never caused a split anywhere because if it’s not random and everyone gets a shot to use it there’s no reason not to use it.
Well the discussion only applies to competition. Though I swear everyone just wants to be that guy that ends the debate because… I don’t know honestly. It seems like a pretty pertinent thing to talk about in a thread for smash on a fighting game forum.
Disclaimer: If you play me, I’m leaving everything on and I’m picking the craziest, most fun stages possible. Fuck that Smashboards-only-five-playable-stages shit. I will only play that other way if I’m in a tournament or something, but I doubt I’d go to tournaments for this stuff if they start instabanning shit like Smogon.
There are douchebags who do turn on lag on purpose.
I draw the comparison because both are parts of the game that go outside the individual character to something more universal that everyone has access to, aren’t as bad as a lot of people say, and are often used as loss excuses when they shouldn’t be. But you are right in that they are different. But what I’m saying is that they are both ‘fair’ on opposite ends of the spectrum. X-Factor is fair because both players have adequate amounts of control over their X-Factor. Items are fair because no one has control over anything. Full control = Apples. No Control = Oranges. Fair = Fruit.
Everyone ends the debate because so many people are sick of talking about it. Which I fully understand. I just like talking about things. It’s how I turn my solo enjoyment of something into a community thing. I find these kind of debate enjoyable, so you’ll usually find me starting discussions. And even though I try to avoid flame war, stuff like this draws a lot of flack because it’s a hot topic item everyone has an opinion on.
In this instance, everyone who is sick of this argument can yell at me for keeping it going in here. I’m basically the one playing Devil’s Advocate so I can enjoy said debate with Smashbro29.
If you play with me all that shits getting turned off. Your going to come over here and get this ass whooping. Tryna plot on a nigga to have a box drop on his head… soft niggas. Item play is for Anime con, soft-core, gamer babies. No one EVER has liked that shit offline, that I have ever played with, that wasn’t ALREADY a bitch.
Some would argue that it takes MORE skill to play with Items On than without- Mid-air item catches, item assisted combos… there’s a lot of depth to the use of items other than just flinging them at opponents.
I’ve posted about it before, and can’t be bothered to dig that post up again, but a look into the mechanics have shown that item spawns are not truly “random”…
They have specific spawn points on each level and appear to operate on a counter depending on the spawn rate(i.e. High, Medium, Low)-- Once a player knows the spawn points and timings, it becomes a game of removing your opponent from the spawn points and getting the items before they do… and just because you have an item doesn’t mean you insta-win, either- You still need to know how to use them, and they can be turned against you.
Also, for the last time for all you people complaining about getting blown up by “random” explosions:
EVER SINCE BRAWL, YOU HAVE HAD THE OPTION TO TURN EXPLOSIVE CONTAINERS AND CAPSULES OFF, MEANING YOU CAN STILL HAVE ITEMS AND NOT WORRY ABOUT GETTING BLOWN UP BECAUSE YOU WERE TOO DUMB TO LEARN THE INTRICACIES OF ITEM SPAWN MECHANICS…
TL;DR: Items aren’t the problem, people being lazy and inflexible are.
