Ok I found the quote from the E3 Wii u/3DS nintendo developer direct when villager, fit trainer and mega man were first announced. "Every player will have his or her own system. That is unique to this version, and I’m trying to find a way to use it to the game’s advantage. " now he is showing off the 3DS version when talking about it so maybe it’s something exclusive to the 3DS game?? If characters are getting their own system then I guess we got a glimpse with little mac and his KO system… so much speculation.
I think you interpreted that wrong. When he says “each player will have his or her own system,” I believe he’s just referring to the fact that every player will be playing the game on their own 3DS. And he’s trying to think of ways to take advantage of that. Like perhaps customization options? I think that was referred to at one point.
The concept of Injustice’s trait system is by far one of the most truly innovative and brilliant ideas in fighting games history, the execution is a different story, but I think it could work wonders in Smash, not like a dedicated trait button, but just some kind of gimmick that makes each character feel unique and true to the universe they hail from rather than have character X’s bair be objectively worse than character Y’s bair. Give Capcom all the hate you want when it comes to UMVC (or anything really), but the one thing they got right that no one can fault them on is that in UMVC3 almost every character’s playstyle is truly representative of that character’s personality and abilities and I feel Smash more than any other fighting game needs to emphasize these clashing universes.
Most of the Marvel issues stemmed from ancient character designs. I thought they did pretty well when dealing with the new additions to the roster. Phoenix dying, RR artillery, GR chains, pretty good. The problem with character individuality stems from their own lack of originality in my mind and having one assigned to them. What do you do with a floating head in a chair or a magician who can just DO everything? It’s not like She-Hulk or X-23 have extensively defining trait other than their genders
Okay I didn’t mean to sidetrack yall on Marvel talk lol, I was only making the point that my #1 hope for Smash 4 (yes I’m calling it that deal with it =P) is that every character feels unique rather than has their moveset and design shoehorned to fit within the “smash verse”. I never played Melee much, but I really hated how it had such a huge cast and yet half of it was just straightup palette swaps and/or inferior versions of other characters. Brawl was a step in the right direction there was very little bloat and each character brought something of their own to the table, I just want to see Sakurai take it up another notch and introduce more whacky character specific stuff.
The final smashes really gave each character a distinct charm, they screamed “hey this is character X not to be confused with character Y” and I just hope that difference is represented within the actual game not just fina lsmahses. Little Mac meter, Zelda transformation, and Lucario aura are really good starts but what else can Sakurai come up with? Maybe have some items be character specific or is that going too far? lol. I’m just thinking out loud, but it would be jaw dropping to see stuff like Toon Link and Adult Link have a move that let’s them summon items that the other Link can’t? Maybe Donkey Kong can eat Diddy’s banana’s for life heal? Maybe Villager gets some kind of bonus power for staying alive for awhile? Maybe make Sonic more momentum based and have him start a little slow but be faster the more continuous hits he gets on an opponent without getting hit?
Me me! It’s not about canon, it’s about a spot in Smash meaning something. The term “all-star” does not apply to Waluigi in any context. He’s filler in his own series, you think they’d feature him in a game reserved for the entire company’s all stars?
Ice Climbers represent something bigger than themselves.
Rosalina although not a choice I agree with has been the hot ticket item for Mario in terms of characters the last few years and can easily be seen as a representation of the Galaxy games.
I can somewhat see that but I don’t feel that’s the reason Sakurai chose them. Even though people had fond memories of Kid Icarus, Pit only had 2 games under his belt and probably neither of them sold as well as the higher popular titles until Uprising. As interesting as WFT is would you really consider her ‘All-Star’?’
