Ok, after nearly crying from reveal trailer, here is analysis. I have no raw numbers as you all know and this is mere speculation, but I like to think I am adequate at this sort of thing after 10+ years of doing it
‘Bad air game’ is subjective. Can’t trust Doc on this methinks(and who would? “Join Nintendo Fun Club” my ass…). DK has a ‘bad air game’ but he had b air and that was enough. Mac has a, granted, super shitty star punch recover move, but if that running dash from the beginning of the gameplay video is air accessible like it looks, it might not be as bad as we think.
Obviously, his ground game is the focus, and without getting a good hands on of the game, he looks like he can get away with it even though Smash is generally more favorable to air characters. Combos are in his moveset, which can mean great things, depending. I’d say he’s not the best KO man though(ironically) without his gimmick, which I won’t call yet on usefulness for lack of data. His ground mobility is astounding…IF that’s his regular dash. I doubt it is though: going through projectiles as he does doesn’t seem like a good sign it’s his normal dash, nor does him attacking out of it each time it’s used. However, I am not ruling this out, as in both instances, he was in the same animation as his dash with DDD at the beginning, and he was more dodging than running straight through them. If anything, the leaping overhead jump thing is already in animation when it goes through Mega Buster, meaning his dashing might jut be dashing afterall, instead of some sort of Dudley setup.
The most interesting thing to me here is the armor. Mac is already a speedy character as shown, but adding armor to his special moves could make him quite a threat on the ground. Armor is something that Smash doesn’t really touch on a lot, but if Metal Box is any showing, it can be powerful with a large window. And if nothing else, that chargeable straight punch has what seems to be a large window of armor, showing it tank things at different times. The counter, if the editting hasn’t been tampered with, seems to be much faster and more damaging than something like Lucario’s, but time will tell on this sort of thing.
The gimmick, if it’s anything like Super Punch-Out, gives me belief in Mac as a non-KO character. He probably has to build up his KO, then use it in one of his special moves. The move used at the end of the video is identical to his similar uppercut move earlier on.
Final Smash is Giga Mac. This is a statement
Supposed special moveset
-Up B Star Punch
-Side B That dashing lunge
-B Straight Punch
-Down B Counter
Pros
-Fast
-Has combos, going from jabs into an uppercut move and uppercut move into Star Punch
-Armor on a lot of moves
-Certain moves projectile invincible
-High KO potential(?)
-Awesome dash
-Great Roll
-Is Little Mac
Cons
-No projectile
-Gimmick based
-KO potential seems low to account for gimmick. Not many moves created a lot of distance.
-Bad air game?
-Counters are aways situational at best, potential waste of a move slot
-Took this long to announce
Variables
-Building up KO stacks: Easy? Cumulative or an all at once with the knock out potential? Does it have to be at KO for full benefit or are there smaller benefits before then If at KO indicator, does it go away at smash move? Generated by…?
-Bad air game is subjective. Game engine not explored enough to determine how bad lack of air game is.
-How good is KO skills without KO stacks?
-Armor and invincibility windows
