confirmed: the Smash ball is an item. “If an opposing Pokmon gets the Smash Ball, at the very least take care to not be standing immediately beside it.” And items can be turned off. 99% sure the tourney scene will have them turned off, and only play final destination.

I thought it was the prevailing thought that the smash ball was an item? I hadn’t seen anything that suggested other methods of getting a final smash.
The game tends not to be balanced for 1 v 1 in mind, so at the end of the day I think the decision to turn on or off smash balls would be in favor of whichever option left the most characters still viable. If with smash balls two characters pull way away in 1 v 1 matchups, then I wouldn’t mind them turning it off, but if smash balls allow a bunch of lower tier characters to have the possibility of having better/easier to land final smashes, it could broaden the characters used.
