Hell yes, the Big Al sticker makes me want to run out and buy a Wii right now. I used to love playing pilotwings as a kid, probably the only one too. Too bad his sticker probably only serves to unlock info about pilotwings in the Chronicle or whatever. I was thinking for a second that all the stickers and such would only reference and serve as background for characters playable in the game, but the Chronicle later in the update makes it clear that that’s not the case. Was hoping there’d be a pilotwings character in the game (SNES ONLY) after I saw the sticker, not sure how’d they would do that though or pick the characeter (lance, shirley, big al, player?). Oh well…crap
I’m not solely talking about the tourny scene either. You’re talking about a random scrub who has never thought critically about items in smash and keeps them off for stupid reasons. Well why do the reasons they want items off matter when the game is better without them? Trying to get them to use items because they hold onto their beliefs for the wrong reason is like convincing an idiot that 1=2.
Take this proof for instance:
Let a=b.
Then a^2=ab
also we can write a^2 + a^2 = a^2 + ab
and we can simplfiy: 2a^2=a^2+ab
we can subtract 2ab from both sides:
2a^2-2ab = a^2 +ab -2ab
we can rewrite that as:
2(a^2-ab) = 1(a^2-ab)
and finally we can cancel (a^2-ab) and get 2=1.
to someone that doesn’t have the capacity to follow the proof it looks like I have shown that 2 = 1 but someone that knows a little bit of math can see that a^2-ab is 0 so what I really have is:
20=10 which of course means what I’ve really shown is 0=0 and not 2=1.
Which is the same as you trying to convince someone that doesn’t have the wherewithal to defend themselves to use items. The fact is Melee is better without them even if some random person doesn’t know exactly why.
Yeah, because opinions don’t exist and something being better (more fun!) is a matter of fact and not opinion.
Stop directly posting to me, please. you’re basically trying to tell me that it’s not possible for me to like smash with items on more than with items off.
So are you saying that random is better than consistent for a competitive game?
lol I love these item rants, esp. when they continually cycle over.
People can play whoever they want to play which will automatically separate the ones who will want to play with items on or not. I’m sure it will be interchangeable because people will like to try different things at different times.
At least I’ll be able to play people on both fronts when they’re available. The metagame will shape itself over time regardless of our personal feelings on what is fair or not and we will have choices on what is considered “fair play.”
There are tons of games with total consistency. I’d like if smash was more random.
i’m saying a game doesn’t have to work in high levels to be a fun game.
You know what fun is?
Translation, so you’d get it: HELL YEAH NIGGA.
you went from saying fuck the smash scene cause they didn’t do enough to keep items in. I called you on that cause you don’t know shit about the item history in the smash scene so you change your position to no i’m talking about the random idiots that say, “lol itemz suck” without giving them a chance well the fact is that they were given a huge chance and they didn’t last. Just cause a random idiot doesn’t know why doesn’t mean they should play with items so stop your crying. I also seriously doubt that someone that’s not part of the hardcore smash tourney scene is going to play with items off cause they feel that’s how it should be played. No if a casual player turns them off it’s because they don’t like them.
ONONE CARS!
Items are fun but in melee (arguably) they had no place in major tournament. I think we get it. Tigerboi said the smash community didn’t do a good enough job… he is talking about just a large group of casual player who refuse to play with items or anywhere other than Final D. Also when he said “Fuck the tourney scene”, he meant he didn’t care about what they did. He was referring more to the poor casual scene in smash.
Ive been watching the brawl videos and it looks like Smashville and it looks like there are only 2 or 3 spawn points for items. >.> That definitely makes it a lot nicer for me.
My position never changed. I was NEVER TALKING about the major tourney scene. wanna see?
I don’t know about you, but I don’t think community focuses mainly on people who focus on the tournaments. I would’ve said “tourney scene” if that’s what I was talking about.
'I hate the community for not being open to to the whole game."
“You don’t know anything about the smash tourney history?”
“Fuck the tourney scene.” (I figured anyone with common sense would translate this into “Uh, I don’t care.”. this is especailly seeing as I’ve admitted to several members (you included!) that I don’t know too much about the tourney scene because I (!!) don’t care about it!)
“You shouldn’t whine about the tourney scene!”
“I’m not talking about the tourney scene.”
“The items were taken out of the tourney scene for good reasons!”
“Nigga can you READ?”
EDIT: THANK YOU GIZA. YOU ARE BRILLIANT.
You don’t get it. Random + Touranments = Shit, they simply do not mix. Any competitive game no matter what it is should be consistent. Items are perfectly ok in casual play, but they are unwelcome at high level play. You never want the outcomes of tournaments to be completely based on luck and randomness.
Whose talking about fun? Tournaments =/ Fun, I thought everyone already knew this. And personally, I have more fun without items, I always considered them annoying since Smash 64, but thats just my opinion.
“Holy shit! games are meant to be fun?! no way!”
I have no interests in playing smash in tournaments. so i’m TALKING ABOUT THE CASUAL SCENE.
Really? Tell that to the masses of people bitching about “o noes wd is gone” on Smash Boards.
And I think I need to make something clear, when I say finding the WD in Melee broke the game, I say it from the game tester’s POV (like I said earlier, means to find a bug). Sorry if it came off as “this makes the game unplayable”, I’m used to using it like that because of work. However, if Peach is the ONLY character in Brawl to possess a WD, that would make her cheap because she would have something that is known to give an advantage, no matter how marginal, that was not meant to be in the game’s design and thus none of the other characters have access to.
Anyway, enough Melee talk about WD and all this other junk. This is a Brawl thread not a “complain about the Smash community and/or advanced techniques” thread.
Quoted for truth.
random smash fan: brawl will suck because the slow characters will be more usable.
Casual scene? Everyone else here has been talking about items in tournaments, and you want to bust in here about the casual scene? The casual scene is so large and varied that we can never truly generalize it. And if you’re looking for fun, then simply don’t play at high levels with competitive games, because tournaments = serious business.
Tigerboi was talking about the casual scene all along. I made the misconception about tournaments and then others rolled with it. My fault. Tiger was never talking about the tournament scene.
Sounds like something Dylan Tnga would say.
Did anyone else notice how there seem to only be a few set item spawn points on Smashville?
“Your talk of playing video games for as a hobby is not welcome here!”
I see no need to make a response to this. I just quoted it because it made me lol.
Listen, 2007… the smash scene is naive. The smash scene is immature. Im not talking about personal maturity levels. Im saying that the scene is young and totally resembles the young street fighter scene in the US.
Do you honestly believe that adding items makes smash melee into a totally random chain of events in which a random player wins each time? If you do, you are a fool (and even I agree that Smash Melee is better competitively with items off). You will see the same top players winning consistently with that bit of randomness thrown in. Its the same damn reason a lot of people don’t like 3rd strike. ‘One lucky parry and I lose half my life.’ ‘It makes attacking unsafe.’ You act like this shit is new to fighting games. But the same top players are winning in 3rd Strike tournaments over and over again, despite it being (arguably) the most random Street Fighter style game that we play.
Good players are good players. If a good player wins 10 out of 10 times in Alpha 2, because its so consistent… and then wins 9 out of 10 in Super Turbo, because of some random damage and the high damage scale… and then wins 8 out of 10 in 3rd strike, because his opponent got random lucky guess parry into low forward > super… GOOD PLAYER IS STILL GOOD. Good player is only going to need to freak out in a single elimination situation, and tighten his game. You think smash is different? It isnt.
I lose 10 of 10 times to my friend in melee with items off. I lose 9 out of 10 with items on. He is still better than me, and the chances of me winning two in a row on him in a double elim tournament are exactly 1%. Cry me a river.
Calling a one marginal advantage “cheap” is pushing it a bit, don’t you think? Not all characters have an extended hit box, right? One of the advantages Link has is that he has an extended hit box. But this doesn’t make him cheap, does it? Whether something was designed to be in the game is immaterial, if some glitch gives a character a minor edge, you can’t use that as basis for calling a character cheap.
Okay, yeah. This’ll mark the last post I make on the subject.
