Technicality is the difficulty of preforming a move. Wavedashing added depth, not the button combination. You lose.
oh shit there’s a new game of rock paper scissors out!? EVO MATERIAL!
thanks for the info…and sonic plays exactly how i expect him too right now…gotta balance him out someway since he’s a speed demon which is completely fine…i don’t mind havint to work for my kills. Bowser at the possibility of being top tier eh? So wait that sort of goes against no wave dashing being a downfall in this game doesn’t it? OH NO TEH WORLD IS ENDIN! I’m sure there’s going to be something else in this game that will be totally abusable…it happens in just about every fighting game.
I’d neg you to pieces if I hadn’t already.
Wavedashing being gone I can only imagine will make it tougher for worse characters to compete, because watching high level play, it isn’t used that much (as far as I can discern).
Not necessarily a bad thing, second jump air dodging will probably become the staple counter to a head stomp attempt on recovery.
D: Awesome.
Interesting. It certainly makes him harder to use, and perhaps this will help balance him.
I am glad for this news.
If Mario has Doc costume, I’ll be happy with this game.
It was bitterly slow to begin with. For god’s sake.
Not quite sure what was meant here. What’s hard to do? Missile cancel? You just said it wasn’t possible.
ughhh
Dumb. Cape is now useless.
good.
unsure.
unsure.
good.
Don’t really know much at this point.
Interesting. This certainly isn’t Melee 2.0.
Good, everyone did it already. Just made it harder for newer players to join in.
I’m not sure how I feel all told. Certainly, I’m glad it’s different. But I’m not big on the whole floaty thing.
Heh, maybe this is how SF2 veterans felt when looking at SF3.
Ah, so you’re the coward.
The wavedash can only be performed by executing it–its technicality. Because technicality exists–timing or button inputs or otherwise–players have different access to the amount of depth a game has, based on their skill level. As a result, the game that exists to players with no execution skill has no depth, because they have no access to advanced tactics. The game that exists to skilled execution players has amazing depth, because they have access to those tactics.
Technicality is the means of accessing depth. The game of Melee, as it stands now, only has depth if you have the necessary technical skill. And if you want to play this semantics game, you might as well say that technicality IS depth, because depth doesn’t exist without being able to execute properly.
ok…i know this is unrelated…save for the fact that it’s mario…but…going back to a convo back then about music being orchestrated…i did not know that they were orchestrating stuff for mario galaxy…

Edit:…yyyeah…i think i’m definitely gonna have fun with this game while i’m waiting for brawl…
Edit 2: come on sakurai…give us a smb3 ship stage! please!

Ya, pong is deep as fuck.
About the bowser being great stuff. This is Gimpyfish saying this. He is a bowser obsessed player… I wouldn’t be surprised if he just ended exaggerate things a bit. Though if Bowser is top tier, that is too cool.
Yes, technicality is the middle man, but the depth still exists regardless. I’m going to steal Sirlin’s example. If someone were to make up a rule in chess saying you needed to juggle three balls in order to move, that would be a technicality. Has the amount of depth changed in the game? No. It’s still there. The player simply doesn’t have access to it.
anyone have a link to a blog/post somewhere from someone whose actually knowledgable and has actually played the demo?
or you can copy and paste what they said.
hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry…
so I was in class today and I get a phone call. I was expecting a phonecall so I thought it was my friend that was supposed to call me so I slip out and answer the phone, it was fucking gamestop calling to tell me that Brawl was delayed but not to worry because they have so many AMAZING games coming in during the holiday season. Fuck you gamestop, fuck you nintendo, stop trying to sell me other shit and give me brawl!
i got the same phone call, Monte.
I was like “uh… ok”
seriously wtf is wrong with gamestop, like if people don’t know. I mean if gamestop was such a gamer friendly store why would they remind me that it’s delayed, that’s the last thing I want to be reminded of!
then they have the audacity to ask if you want to move your pre-order to another game. They are glad it was just a computer recording, because im sure no poor person wants to be deafened by screams of NO.
In all seriousness, im sure “someone” out there doesnt know its been delayed. Plus, what better way for them to try to make some more money by saying “hey, this game isnt coming out til later, so if you should buy this other game now, since by the time the game you wanted is released, youd have saved up the money again.”
/end rant
nice update from the guy who played the game, thanks. its still just a demo, so im gonna not take everything to heart…that much.
I realize the guy you’re responding to is a bit of a tool, but your argument makes little sense. Suppose a game featured a variety of tactics with counters and counters to those counters and all the things that give games depth. Suppose that very same game had no real execution barriers; the hardest thing was perhaps a fireball motion or hitting two buttons at the same time. Does that game suddenly lack depth?
Perhaps we should reverse engineer some old fighters and make motions more complicated. Raging Storm motion for a dragon punch, perhaps. Instant depth? 720+A+B to do Link’s spin attack. Instant depth? Make the Blanka Ball only come out if roll-cancelled. Instant depth?
I won’t deny the impact advanced, difficult-to-perform tactics like roll-cancelling or the multitude of advanced tactics in Melee have on the metagame. And I don’t think anybody within their right mind would deny that either. But to somehow correlate the difficulty in performing a tactic with the amount of depth present in a game? No dice. Plenty of deep games, some waaaaaaaaaaaaaay older than Smash, do not have the same execution barriers. All those barriers do is serve to alienate potential players who would likely would have otherwise contributed to a game’s scene.
Technical stuff is not needed to make a deep game, but sometimes it can make the game more fun. In Melee, a lot of technical stuff added depth but if you make the same function a button… it still has the same depth.
Sometimes technical stuff like L-canceling can add depth too, but it could of been done better in melee if the timing changed more depending on what you hit (hit opponent, missed, shield, light shield, and just shields size making different timing). Technical stuff like this can add to a game, but you need timing variants to the technical stuff for it to add depth… melee lacked that in its technical stuff most of the time.
Melee technicality did not add depth… stuff that added depth need some tech skill.
I just hope if they add squre enix they’ll add Frog or Robo from chrono trigger
Please, explain.
Yeah, wavedashing added depth but it also was a barrier to enter play for people that had trouble executing/didn’t know about it. Really the best thing to do would have just made wavedashing a one button and a direction thing or something like that, that way the game kept the depth without the arbitrary execution barrier.
