Super Saikyo Dan Match-up Thread

Shisso Buraiken doesn’t have armour now, no. Instead it now breaks armour. Which is, well, kind of pointless. You should never be throwing it out in a situation where the opponent can focus it. In theory it works now on reaction to things like Breathless or a Balrog EX dash punch, but personally I rather enjoyed being able to focus absorb a Dan ultra, so I’m a bit sad that it’s gone.

As for your focus whiffing on dizzy Hugo, that’s a Hugo-specific quirk. It takes a longer time for Hugo to get up and officially into his dizzy animation than any other character, so you need to delay your punish by about 8-10 frames.

Ahh that makes more sense. I guess I misunderstood the change to the Ultra. Thanks for the clarification on Hugo!

I just noticed Dan’s U1 is trading with random things now
It didn’t go through cody’s U2 dust and just bounced me off and it also bounces me off dive kicks :frowning:

So hk kicks go over Decapre, im sure this has been pointed out but i haven’t had much time to try Dan out

Here’s my experience with new character matchups so far:

vs Hugo:

I have little trouble with the footsie game as I can punish whiffed slaps and normals with standing medium punch. Focus attacks are also very effective against slaps. His 2 frame command grab isn’t as crazy as Zangief’s, but I would still be wary of throwing out medium, heavy or ex dan kicks. His jump-ins are easy to anti-air with such a large hitbox. His ultra 2 can catch you even if you back dash from two blocks away (using training mode as a reference).

vs Elena:

I find this a tricky matchup because it’s next to impossible to out-footsie her. She can punish whiffed fireballs with slide from max distance so don’t just throw it out without thinking it through. Your heavy dan kick can easily be punished because the last hit almost always whiffs due to her low crouching hitbox. All version of her Rhino horn are difficult to punish on block. The only way I found to punish on block is st. LK link into H.dp. However, you can duck under the ex Rhino horn using either cr. LK or cr. MK and then punish with cr. LK link into st. LK into H.dp. If you hold forward slightly and then do cr. MK, she’ll end up behind you. Punish the same way as I mentioned and it’ll put you in a better position if you’re near the corner. Watch out for her cr.MK into EX overhead or raw Ex overhead cos it’s a move that’s used very often in a match. Try to dp that thing when you see it coming cos I don’t think you can punish it on block. Her Healing ultra is very annoying. If she does it after knocking you down, the only thing that I can guarantee to hit her with is walk forward st. MK.

vs Poision:

Poision will sit back and throw fireballs at you all day if she has to. It can be quite tricky to focus through her fireballs because of their large variation in speeds. The heavy fireball is very slow and doesn’t go very far and not easy to jump over. The light fireball is quite fast and goes full screen while the medium version is a mixture of the two. My main strategy is to empty jump cr. LK from the correct range and timing. If I jump from too close, she can cr HP me. If I misread the fireball and end up jumping too late, she can use st. HK to hit me out of the air. Another way I use to deal with this match up is to slowly walk her to the corner. This requires me to block alot of fireballs as well as a great deal of teching throws (much more difficult than the empty jump low method).

I haven’t played any decent Decapre’s or Rolento’s yet. I’ll post my experiences when I have.

What are Dan’s best matchups as of AE 2012? I kinda figured out he beats Dhalsim (or maybe that was just luck hehe ) And I have been told that Makoto is actually a good match for Dan. I’ve heard Ultradavid mention that Dan does have a few pretty good matchups when he talks about him, but I’ve never heard anything specific.

For me personally, I’ll name My worst AE match ups which is shorter: Zangeif, Guy, Vega, Yang, Ibuki, Rose, Fei, Adon, and Juri

With Makoto, it depends on how good your opponent is…but most of the time DanKicks will beat her shenanigans.

Dan actually has quite a few good matchups. Gouken, Cody, Makoto, Ken, Hakan, Sakura, Cammy, El Fuerte and Abel are all in Dan’s favor in my opinion. Unfortunately Dan has some brutally awful matchups. Zangief, ChunLi and most of the lame charge characters will give any Dan player a hard time(online at least). Again, things change a lot depending on the player matchup. I find I do a lot better against people that try to rush me down when I’m playing Dan. The super lame players using zoning characters make me very very sad. WAR DAN!!!

Some of those I agree with, but Gouken and Cammy? And definitely not Cody!

Well with Gouken I find I can focus dash through a fireball after a well timed dash forward. From there it’s all dan really. Gouken is a sitting duck so long as you watch out for ex tatsu and the parries which if you’re good at reading opponents is not too hard. As for Cody it’s very similar. Get in past the rocks and watch out for EX bingo. I have yet to come across a Gouken or Cody that has made those matches seem hard and I’ve played my share of high level players. Cammy can be tricky but Dan’s focus back dash away from dive kicks is really handy. And now with the back-HK Cammy’s not as scary if she gets you in the corner.

Any decent Gouken won’t make it easy for you to focus dash through fireballs. And if you guess incorrectly on his wakeup and get hit with EX tatsu then you get thrown across the screen and have to start from scratch (even EX counter throws you clean across the stage). I feel Dan’s poor jump arc is a major issue in this MU too - Gouken has forever and a day to react to jump-ins and EX tatsu will vacuum you in from miles away.

Cody is at least 6-4 in his favour, if not more. He has all the buttons necessary to keep Dan out, and his EX CU change and rock throw change make jumping in even more difficult than it was in AE2012. He can react to medium/heavy DK with Zonk and he can slide under light DK during pressure if he has no meter or wants to escape the corner. His high stun output and Dan’s low stun rating are also clearly in his favour. This is one of my most played match-ups (as Dan), and to me it plays out like a lot of Dan’s match-ups - once the opponent realises they can safely down-back and either tech or just take the throw, there’s not a hell of a lot you can do. Cody will easily make back all the chip damage from 10+ blocked DKs and FADCd fireballs in one combo. Much like a lot of characters, Cody’s reeling animation while crouching causes standard combos to whiff after b.hk or even cl.mp counter-hits. Spacing GDK is also a problem as Cody can punish it on whiff with medium ruffian kick. I know match-ups are often a subjective thing, but that’s just my opinion. Next time you play a high level Cody and wreck him with Dan I’d love to see the video!

I totally agree zonks kill Dan’s options IMO. also Kills Adon’s options as well. best advice is to play conservative.

Could be I’ve never played a good Cody. I do think I have pretty good reads and tend to know when an EX Zonk is coming which I feel is the only thing that can break this match for Dan. Here is a match I played against a decent Cody not too long ago.

Thanks for posting that. It’s hard to judge people based on one match, but I really don’t think this Cody knew the match-up at all. He didn’t do any of the things I mentioned before, he didn’t anti-air at all, he threw out unsafe ruffians, EX Zonks and heavy Criminal Upper all over the place, he was constantly jumping around for no apparent reason… I think the match-up becomes much harder for Dan if the Cody plays solid keep-away and conservative on defence when Dan does get in.

Dunno if its common knowledge, but i found an almost universal 4 frame safejump setup. Will post all findings after EVO.
