Reserved, just in case.

This might be a bit basic but what is the most damaging meterless punish for a blocked sweep by Ryu, and will it work at the farthest distance at which the sweep will connect?

Without any meter, pretty much just HP Rekkas for 168 damage. It’s 10 frames, but Ryu is like -14 on his sweep I think. The pushback is too great for anything other than that really. If you’re in his face when he sweeps, your other option would be to cr.HP (100 damage) or cr.HK and go for a safe setup afterwards for a chance at more damage than the Rekkas. If you’ve focused it though, you have time to land a level 2 and do cl.HP Rekkas or FK for 268 or 272 damage respectively.

Thanks. That’s about what I figured.

This next one might have general application but I’m asking specifically in the Rufus match up. Is there any use in using lk flame kick against dive kick pressure to fish for a trade? Super or Ultra juggling comes to mind. I won’t be able to do any testing for a few days…

Super juggling I think requires a greater height; either that or the Flame Kick launches the opponent too far horizontally. I forget which it is. It’s probably best to stick with MK Flame Kick if you’re going to DP at all. Otherwise, cr.MP+LP+LK to OS tech the Dive kick shenanigans.

LK CW on the other hand, I’d say is pretty useful. It doesn’t whiff on a crouching Rufus, making it a solid reversal. Rufus also doesn’t have a 3-frame normal so he’ll have to do a normal move with reversal timing to punish you (or attempt a throw). What LK CW does after a Dive Kick is:
[]vs. Throw: LK CW comes out after blockstun ends for 3 clean hits.
[
]vs. Dive Kick: LK CW anti-airs the dive kick for up to 3 hits and a possible Ultra juggle (2-hit U1 I believe, but it really depends on the height of the dive kick being countered)
[]vs. Tight Blockstring: No LK CW comes out. You can move your stick back to d/b to defend again.
[
]vs. Frame Traps: LK CW comes out as a clean 3-hit reversal on some traps; on others it may get hit for an aerial reset, but Rufus will gain no advantage. This includes EX Messiah (he’ll hit you once and you’ll be reset).

vs. Crouch Blocking: If Rufus is close enough, LK CW crosses him up for 2-hits and allows you to switch sides. If further away, this simply causes blockstun.
Awesome. I love using CW for for its cross up properties, I’ve just been scared to apply it against this fat tub’s pressure.

I’ve recently began running into a lot of Sagat, it’s become clear I’m pretty bad at this match up.

I feel I lack much of an objective other than “Get In.” Once I’m in, I go for mixups and pressure, only to eat a (random) Tiger Knee, throw or Uppercut, sending me right back out into the Tiger Obstacle Course. It’s certainly more me than Fei, but I just feel my blockstrings, frame traps etc, just are not enough to keep Sagat and myself right where I want to be.

Any tips? I’ve been hunched over many Fei x Sagat match videos the past 2 days trying to figure out things, but often times they are doing things I would do in a particlar situation, just that it ends up working for them. :<

Thanks in advance guys.

Patience, bags of it. Similar to the guile match up although not nearly as bad.

This is one match I took a massive hit (500pp?) on in ranked to learn. Basically (most) Sagat’s want to be as far away from you as possible to open up their options. Don’t let them, stay mid range to close. Never jump, and I do mean never, Sagat only deals the majority of his biggest combo’s/damage if you jump in. If he’s spamming TK (he shouldn’t be) then our Cr-mk goes under.

I usually advance and throw out cr-hp as it will stuff both high and low tiger shots in range. The objective is to get him into the corner by walking forward and then staying about a MP rekka’s length away. He then cant throw any Tiger shots, and TK is just a poor special so any decent Sagat won’t be using it very often unless it’s a finisher.

You can then go ahead and trap him there, there is no way out for Sagat, and he crumbles under pressure with no bar’s.

Watch that match on what and what not to do from the great man himself. He get’s beat, but you can see why he gets beat.

Sagat is my secondary and he really has a tough time zoning if you stick to him. DO NOT JUMP!

Thanks Highland.

I didn’t really think of using cr.HP as something to challenge Tiger Shots, interesting. I’ll have to try it out. I’m aware of cr.MK being able to sneak under Tiger Knee, though I seem to only have it work on Heavy versions. Can it get under Light, or does that hit too low?

The more I play this match up, the more it feels like the Balrog match up at times. I feel like I end up having to take great risk to generate damage, or to create opportunities to do damage. The more random / “fearless” the Sagat player seems to be, the harder time I end up having… :<

This is one of few match ups I still feel completely lost in despite the amount of time I’ve spent playing at this point.

I know what you mean, It’s not an easy match but it is an even one. I’d rather play Sagat than Rog any day! You just have to make sure your advancing, hold your ground and make sure YOU control the space. Personally I never use rekka as a poke or to advance though, you can see how it can be punished in the Mago vid.

EX CW is the only meter I’d burn if you have to. Focus is very good against Sagat also. I’ll try and look out a vid of me against him and show you what I mean. It’s actually one of the match ups I enjoy because you have to be on your toe’s the whole time, Sagat will just uppercut your ass if you get fancy.

A while back Emblemlord did a write up, I dug it out here…http://shoryuken.com/f273/journey-tigerlord-vs-fei-long-251212/index4.html (its about half way down)

Lots of good advice there. The EX Tiger shot is something I forget to mention, so refrain from focus if he has meter.

Hey guys,

My buddy and I play the Fei (me) vs. Ryu (him) match up A LOT, and lately he’s been getting the better of me. He seems to use his focus a lot and it I seem to be having problems dealing with his continuous focus attacks. Any tips on stuffing Ryu’s focuses?

Also, I try to use my focus more, but Ryu seems to have a lot of normals that have two hits, so I will absorb the first hit and eat the next. I’m getting frustrated that I can’t play the same focus game as he does.

if youre getting focused a lot vs a regular sparring partner, you are probably being predicable about pressing buttons, or he just knows you really well. try being more deliberate about your attacks, and waiting for him to show focus, and then bust it with a CW, or f+hk

I spar with my friend’s Ryu a lot also. Focus is not really an issue cuz you can rekka x3 on reaction to his focus attack. Your focus attack has also longer range. Back dash out of his focus range and rekka will always catch his focus back dash. If you play this matchup right, which is to stay just outside his c.mk range and poke with lp rekka till he is in corner and anti-air his jump ins, you should be in good shape.

you can get crumpled between 1st and second rekka. its not fast enough if he releases as soon as contact is made as far as i know

wheres the discussion on matchups?

okay! I got some issues;

-I need some help with sakura. that cr.mk xx shoryu combo always gets me. My main pokes I use are st.HP, st.LP to bait in an attack, but this sakura was something aggressive. Her slow fireball game was very good to so it was hard trying to neutral jump without getting hit from a cr.HP dash-in

what are some good notes to keep so I could make my Fei strong? lol…fei strong

Know your focus range and try to Level 1 or 2 focus. Usually the cr.mk xx shoryu is an OS so if you focus it then she can’t OS. So in essence you could get a crumple or safely back dash after a block. st.HP is really good too. Fei’s focus and dash baiting are good tools
