There have been some grumblings about this year’s stream and to some extent, people are justified in their qualms. On the other hand, as people have pointed out, this is a relatively new process for the folks who put on the best fighting game tourney, so it is also a learning process.
Instead of providing demonstrative and oft times criticisms that aren’t very constructive, and instead of responding with “shit’s free so shut up because I walked 20 miles in snow to get to EVO 2005”…I figured we should just make suggestions as to how the stream, content and coverage could provide a better experience for those who are relegated to the stream for one reason or another.
I would have liked to see more interaction with the players. Maybe a post-fight interview of sorts, especially after the top 8.
better coverage of the tourney after daigo wins it all. I know for me personally, the EVO experience doesn’t end with the killing blow in the final round of the final fight…I’d like to see awards being handed out, post-game commentary and overall closure after building such great hype.
brackets from start to finish would have been nice
commentary was on-point…except for when it was needed the most. If EVO’s going to incorporate other entities that aren’t willing to do their homework on how the round system works and on the basic nuances of the game, then they shouldn’t be allowed to speak during the most important fight of the whole 3-day event. It’s like asking someone you just met to be your best man at your wedding…what could they possibly contribute?
they say that you shouldn’t “talk about it, be about it”…so is there a place where folks could volounteer to work/help out for next year’s EVO? I mean, I’m sure there is always something to do and always places where more people would be convenient in helping make the event run smoother.
So instead of making this another “this is why the stream wasn’t good” threads, let’s see if we can put our collective experiences together and help EVO get bigger and better.
Awards were handed out at the end of the stream actually.
But as soon as we heard “Our rising star player award gos to…”,the stream just cut out.
I was interested to see who this rising star player was,and I wanted to see what other awards/announcements were made. Why did the stream just cut off when they had a chance to show this?
I’m not out to troll, but I want to mention some things in your post.
While I agree with this, I don’t think it would be very efficient time wise, I mean if you factor in a 5 to 6 minute interview, you’re looking at an additional hour of stream time. Good idea though, possibly it could get worked into next years stream.
Another good idea, but actually awards were handed out from what Cheeh Wizard said. Also, when the stage is packed with people, its always not as easy.

This is how I think of it, if someone was going to give you a huge sponsorship and show your event on national TV, and they stated that option X had to be part of it or nothing, would you say no?
Since this thread is about the 2011 stream, let me ask ou this, if you saw NBC was working a production, do you think that they would let you just walk up and help their staff with cables? NO. Level|Up had their team to do this.
I think they should find a better host for the Stream server. I’m pretty sure the stream went out when the viewers spiked from 14,000 to 26,000 in 10 seconds. Another thing would be to get any announcements to us, like the promotion, because they just flash it on the screen for 5 secs and I don’t know the product or the code for the MadCatz promotion. Another thing would be to show the person talking on stage, an example would be the producers. Because the cameras are normally focused on the Commentators.
Can we overestimate the number of people who are going to watch the stream next year? It seemed mostly fine up until the point where it got to be nearing 30k viewers on the ustream… Maybe lets just assume 60-75K viewers max next year and try to have capacity for that?
I wasn’t talking about volunteering for level up…I was talking about EVO. I mean, if we had more folks working each pool, maybe an updated/compiled bracket wouldn’t be too much to ask for.
As for Sessler and the option, I feel you on basically having to sell out a little in order to get more exposure, but there are always work-arounds. I mean, why not have him comment after the fight as opposed l during? I mean, was it being televised live on G4? If it was going to a a retrospect show, then there’s no reason he could have done his commentary after the match and come off more informed about what he was talking about. If not post production commentary, why not have a third person to balance it out? I mean, it was opposite ends of the spectrum with those two…why not have Seth be the technical, Adam be the absolute noob and ski/keits/dogface be the third? Just having two people really brought out the inadequacies of the weaker commentator.

I agree with more post-match analysis and interviews being a good idea. 30-60 seconds of “What are your thoughts on the match? What was your strategy coming into it? Take us through that final round, where you gave up an early life lead. What did you need to do to get back into it?”
Also, instant replay of a key moment of the match with in-depth analysis would be cool. Tell the viewers how Tokido used option select demon to take away Abel’s attempts to escape the vortex. If you have this at the same time of the interview, I think it would greatly improve the production quality without causing major time problems. They can even skip or shorten it if they’re behind schedule.
This. A replay during the interview/retrospect section would really prove to display alot of the genius and skill a lot of these players exhibit when winning these high level matches; I think a lot of that is lost on the viewer when we’re watching the clutch victories in many of these high level matches.
I mean, we all like to relive just how Romo scrambled out of the pocket just in time to escape that sack, or how a spot on read in his opponents route allowed Terrance Newman the pick and return for a touchdown right?
LET. FADC. AKA. SEB. HANDLE. THE. STREAM. cannot stress this enough.
Or level|up. They were great too, only problem was Stickam sucking, but when several mirrors were available, namely the ustream mirror, it was all a lot better. You did it on Ustream last year. Did EVO really need some sort of partnership with Stickam this time?
Anyways, next year, I’d like to see pretty much the same I saw this year, with more emphasis on big name games. it was too weird not seeing FlashMetroid, Sanford and ILU Joe till semis.
Also, make sure Skii is able to maintain his voice at least till the finals. I know he gets really hyped and that’s good, so make sure he always has something to drink. And promise us, no Adam Sassler. Please. I beg you.
As was mentioned in the other more sodium rich stream discussion, some of us have no problem throwing money at the stream just as many people pay-per-view sporting events. I’m no streaming tech, but if all it takes is money for more/redundant servers to ensure glitch-free viewing pleasure, many of us are ready and willing to throw down.
Also in regards to interviews and such, anyone who says it would take too much time has not considered the 15+ minute hardware changeovers between games.
