Street Sweeper, Footsie Fighting Game

Street Sweeper is a simpel homemade fighting game made by me based around the footsie game found in fighting games.

Mechanics:
While moving in and out of range you can use 3 tools, namely :
[]Kick (standing short)
[
]Sweep

Parry (low only)
Blocking isn’t possible and you have to either catch your opponent in a bad spot or bait and punish his moves.

Each of the 3 different moves have their own unique properties .
Sweep is a 1-hit ko which will win you a round, Kick makes sweep whiff and parry beats a sweep and allows you to counter with your own sweep.

Every fighting game player should give this a try!
You can play the game with an Arcadestick, Gamepad or keyboard on your PC(Windows XP, Vista, 7). Download it here https://www.box.com/s/bjojvs79cmovz2pigbvm
and give it a try (bring it to meetings and tournaments and record some footage!) or check out the trailer to see the game in action.

The final product will be free, feature 8 characters(based around the footsie principles of fighting game archetypes), more stages and original spritework (these are edited neo geo pocket sprites for those of you who didn’t notice).

Where are the mexicans?

Alas no gun-toting mexicans are planned

This is pretty damn cool. We have footsies, divekicks, now all we need is one with projectiles.

You only have fireball and jump-in and a DP which only hits jumping people, you get hit by a fireball you lose, you block 10 fireballs you lose, you get shoryu’d you lose, you get hit by a jump-in you lose?

Um…

Are you familiar?

Neat game. The only thing I would add would be low attacks with varying speeds. A common tactic in the footsies game is to throw out cr.shorts or jabs to bait out a sweep or cr.forward, and then whiff punishing it. You could also add a mid or high attack that does low damage, but can beat sweeps, but in turn can be beaten by that st.kick you already have in place.

If you want to kick it up a notch, you should add fireballs with high recovery, and give each other the ability to jump.

Each attack does limited damage, but the first person to get knocked down loses.

I want to add this is a really cool looking game. I love the portraits and the stage art, and the simple character sprites work very well. Kudos to the artist on this one!

@ A_Rival, yes a friend showed me that last week, I’ve been working on this on and off for a few months. Even though both games emphasise footsies, the execution is very different if you thoroughly look at both games.

@ Eltrouble I really like your thoughts, my original idea, was 4 moves, kick, sweep, hopkick, fireball. hopkick would act like a 1 button jump that would go through fireballs. And fireballs would be similiar to kicks in that they don’t KO but you are able to combo into sweep if you hit the fireball close enough. But I’ve decided to keep it simple and let every character have 2 moves and 1 special action like parrying.
Now I’m experimenting with a character that has a Guile Knee Bazooka and a backwards hopkick, both do 33% damage. They are easier to hit with, and they increase your movement, but the reward for hitting is less.

Also a bug(feature lol) was discovered, if you press parry and sweep at the same time, you enter the first few frames of sweep, giving you a ‘crouching’ animation, which acts like ‘feinting’ a sweep lol.

Those are NeoGeo Pocket sprite rips. They just put Ryo’s head on Ryu’s body.

Well hey, combos and CPS1 chains were originally bugs. Some of the best bugs become the most interesting features, lol. Just look at kara-cancelling.

The game looks pretty good as is, I’m just thinking above and beyond and how we could add more stuff to it. You could add like an anti-air to go along with the ability to jump, and anti-airs are instant kills, but since they have high recovery, and sweeps are also anti-kills, they’re either used to punish jump attacks (which is a good thing), or go for EXTREMELY high-risk high-reward anti-airs to punish pokes (which teaches you why that’s a bad habit).

Of course fireballs should do minimal damage, but they are without doubt an integral part of the footsies game, and one bad fireball will lead to a jump attack+sweep which will kill you. I’m sort of envisioning this game as a sort of trainer for how to develop a strong defense and ground game, skills which are invaluable in all fighting games.

As for your ideas to have hop kicks, bazooka knees and all that, you could actually create different characters with different move sets. That would be fun. The portraits wouldn’t even have to be that different, just give them a different color or hairstyle or something, and give them different basic move sets to play with.

But I think knockdowns and anti-airs should always be rewarded with a round win, since they’re game changers in any fighting game.

If you get a double KO as the final wins for both characters, it overlays both P1 and P2 win text. Also causes P1 to have a mimicking double of himself. Has no hitboxes but it looks weird.

If you tap down and kick at the same time to do the feint cancel thing at the same time the hitbox still occurs. It’s technically an infinite, though it’s useless since the only real time to connect would be in the same situation a sweep would connect.

looks really cool.

Make a divekick character. For shits and giggles.

I’d also love to see a grappler character.
