I think Capcom got more out of 2012 than you might think… for one, it likely revitalized the Japanese arcade scene, so they actually stand to profit from it. It was nice that they didn’t charge console owners for it, though.
There are a few reasons I’m concerned about balance for SFxT. One, they might not have a long leash on the game. If it doesn’t perform well early and if DLC doesn’t sell, they might just pull the financial plug on it and move on to other projects. SF4 only saw so many updates because of how much of a success it was, plus it had a Japanese arcade release. It’s possible their “maintenance” on the game could be limited to just a few months of DLC support, and that’s it. Two, I’m not sure they’ve got their head screwed on right with a lot of things in the game. If it’s their intention to have the gems be balanced against each other, and they come up with THIS, why should I trust their future character balancing?
I’m being a bit pessimistic about it, but I want to be proven wrong. I want them to commit to doing a meaningful engine/character rebalance after about 10 months, and I want it to be 2012-esque in terms of success. I’m just skeptical we’ll get it, because the development of this game has been puzzling at every turn.
I don’t hate it with a passion, I just would not play it again. Just so many other, better, fighting games that need my time. Just can’t stomach wasting it on SFxT.
I don’t think anyone is denying SFxT does have some merit to it, but I’m fully behind the hate-driven hive mind the FGC has equipped for this game. Capcom took a fundamentally decent product and completely disrespected the game AND us by slapping us in the face with this on-disc DLC bullshit, total lack of communication about the 360’s missing co-op feature, and the pay-to-win gem insanity. Regardless of whatever else the game does well, I don’t think it deserves to be played or explored. Capcom didn’t treat us with an ounce of respect with how they handled this game, why should we return the favor? So we can give them the indication that this kind of monetization is acceptable as long as the game is “good enough,” and we get Auto Blocking and Auto Throwing for no cost in Darkstalkers 4 and have a quarter of the cast locked behind a pay wall for purchase months later? Hell no. I’m extremely proud at how the whole of the fighting game community has reacted to this mess, and I hope it doesn’t end anytime soon (unless Capcom actually makes some substantial strides to fixing this disaster, which we all know isn’t going to happen).
While there are some people who minic the negative opinions of others, I have no problems explaining my discontent for the game. I don’t understand why so many sfxt fans like to pretend that every hater has no legitimate reason to hate the game outside of Capcom’s marketing practice.
I don’t like the fundamentals of the game. DPs shouldn’t be ass without meter. Grapplers shouldn’t suck at what they do best. If linking tons of normals into a combo scale it so much then what’s the benefit of doing them over the easier and more accessible chains that’ll lead to similar damage? Tag launcher requires no meter and there’s always a partner to tag into for that low-risk mid/high-reward juggle. In a game where jabs and shorts lead to an easy 400+ damage, there’s no reason for throws to suck so bad; super high risk for a little reward. They wouldn’t be so useless if you could use them to punish tech rolls, which have crazy good range for being completely safe from start to finish. So many characters can’t throw, anti-air, or approach without meter (some even with meter) and you only get 3 slots.
People can say what they want about the haters. It’s not even about the gems, wallet milking or even the locked disc content anymore. When you throw all that aside, the game is not fulfilling. I feel like I’m not getting rewarded for making the right choices like I do in every other fighting game, even long before SF4 (which actually does the same thing but not to this extent). I thought fundamentals are what make or break a game for players(which I assume is why many people here don’t play MK, DOA or BB), so I don’t understand why people are willing to give this game a pass. Do people really like a game dominated by jump-ins and blockstrings?
I guess this is hard to comprehend? Compared to the other pickings, SFxT is really dull in comparison. Even showing it to my casual friends who don’t play fighters, they say it bores them.
I think the big point here, is after a few years of consistently great releases, the FGC simply doesn’t have the time or patience for an SFxT type flop. It isn’t so much hate, but more a plethora of other options. There are so many other games that are simply better on every level, there is no reason to play SFxT. Therefore without a need to play, there is no need to defend it, and every reason to criticize it every now and then. It is a nice reminder to the game industry that we have enough games, and if you don’t drop something dope, like a SF4 or a Skullgirls, we won’t play your shitty game.
I’m not sure if you’ve read Jibbo’s ‘You’re doing it wrong’ thread, but if you haven’t do give it a look. This game has its own fundamentals which, put together, are internally consistent and make a lot of sense when you take the time to learn them.
There are plenty of legitimate reasons why someone would dislike playing this game.
But hating the game’s existence and hating on the people that actually do enjoy the game? Yeah, these people have the wrong priorities in life. My advice to these people, well actually I’ll just let Mr. SF tell you: https://twitter.com/#!/AlexValleSF4/status/198149534910660608
It’s funny that you bring up SF4 because a lot of the things that I don’t like about SFxT are the things that it shares with SF4. Things like slow ass walk speeds, floaty ass jumps, big ass stages, sloppy input leniency, and grotesque character model body proportions.
I’m not saying that you can’t legitimately prefer SF4 over SFxT, I know I do, but let’s not fool ourselves into thinking that SF4 is a better game.
Are we talking about SF4 of 09 or SSF4AE of 2012… If its SF4 of old, ok I kinda see your point… If its 2012 where speaking of though, your off your chair. AE is by far the better game, preference withheld. AE > SFxT any day, period.
This is starting to get a little out of hand though, so I am going to bow out with this post. Cheers.
Except that the issues that I have with SF4 are present and remained unchanged in every iteration of the game, from vanilla to 2012, and they’re there again in SFxT.
Not to mention that you have brought up the fact that the first iteration of every new SF game is often not well received, and it’s not until a couple of updates later before enough people start to warm up to and accept the game.
Anyways, it’s better to just leave SFxT to those who genuinely enjoy the game while you go back to enjoying any of the many other fighters out right now.
This is a well-written piece and I agree with everything you just said. I’ll even be as bold as to say that SFxT may even be the most FUN game Capcom ever made.
I think the reasons you gave for people not liking the game are correct, but I actually think 90% (if not more) of the hate is literally just bandwagon hate. Pure and simple.
Its “cool” to hate SFxT. And the FGC is made up mainly of sheep
Some people like it, some don’t. Why do we feel the need to try to convince others that a certain game is “good”? Nobody’s mind is really going to be changed here.
I don’t understand why so many people on SRK have this opinion that whatever game is their favourite is “the best” and anybody who may play a different fighting game is a “scrubby loser” who is playing an inferior game.
If Poster A likes KoF XIII and Poster B likes SF x T and Poster C likes SSFIV, why would any of them argue with each other? Does Poster A’s ability to enjoy KoF hinge that much on what Poster B & C play? Are people really that insecure in their own likes and dislikes that their enjoyment of a game depends on other people enjoying it too?
I think it’s that whole community and support aspect type of thing people are looking at. I think this game has potential for lots of hype. It’s just like whatever when people are trashing it based on no-boost gem scenarios that people are playing with.
