Video game publisher Capcom is moving forward with a sequel to its live action âStreet Fighter: Assassinâs Fistâ digital series, based on its popular franchise.
Joey Ansah is returning to write and direct âStreet Fighter: World Warriorâ to bow in late 2015 or early 2016.
Ansah will reunite with âAssassinâs Fistâ castmembers Mike Moh, who played Ryu, and Gaku Space (Goki).
Capcom announced the series at its Comic-Con panel in San Diego on Friday.
The 12 episodes of âAssassinâs Fistâ debuted on Machinima earlier this year and generated 16 million views.
âWe demonstrated with âAssassinâs Fistâ that an authentic, live-action version of videogames, with a compelling and dramatic storyline, can be made,â said series producer Jacqueline Quella. âWeâll be taking the same approach with the new series.â
The new series will introduce more of the gameâs iconic characters.
âThe scale of âWorld Warriorâ is much larger, picking up where âAssassinâs Fistâ left off as we follow Ryu and Ken on their âMusha Shugyoâ (warriorâs pilgrimage),â Ansah said. âThe Shadaloo criminal cartel will be introduced, led by the extremely dangerous M.Bison, which will naturally lead into the World Warrior tournament,â in which fan favorites Guile, Chun-li, Sagat will play a significant role.
âThere are some big and primal themes which weâll be exploring in the sequel,â said producer Mark Wooding. âIt will be thrilling and naturally, as befits the game, the fights will be epic, but it will be driven by the characters, their stories, faults and problems. It will be a dark tale.â
âAssassinâs Fistâ was first announced at Comic-Con in 2012.
âWe are delighted to be working again with the team that did such an excellent job with âStreet Fighter: Assassins Fist,â said Matt Dahlgren, associate director of brand marketing at Capcom. âThe response to it has been amazing, and working with filmmakers who are so passionate about the game is an extremely rewarding process.â
Capcom also announced âAssassinâs Fistâ will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in the fall, as well as video-on-demand and download-to-own platforms. Content Media Corp is handling the distribution. The discs will include an unreleased epilogue episode.
