Would you be okay with them screwing over the TOs of Winter Clash in Cannes, or even majors such as Final Round, NCR and Combo Breaker that take place before June, just so they could launch the game with story mode?
Basically this is how I see it. If you’re a competitive fighting game player, new to competitive fighters or a competitive gamer looking to get into fighting games. You should pick this up on Feb 16th so you can hit the ground running.
If you are a casual player who isn’t really into the competitive side of things and prefer the other game modes like story and what not. You should wait until March to pick this game up. because right now it looks like it’s still in beta. And was just released early for the competitive scene, what with EVO coming up soon, and a bunch of tournaments all ready scheduled to host SFV around release time.
Casual players should just wait till March. I think Capcom should’ve said something along these lines. This would have problem eased a lot of people’s concerns and complaints and had been seen as a show of good faith.
That is not something any video game company would ever say. They are a BUSINESS.
Reviewers are the ones that hand that information out. Either way Capcom is banking on a lot of blind casuals picking up SFV because SFV. There are a lot of casual casual people who dont even read/watch reviews. They just go for whatever is the hot thing people are talking about.
Supposedly there’s dudes lined around the block in NY to buy a PRE street date copy of SFV and they probably aren’t all tourney players.
I agree it is disheartening that an arcade mode is not in right now, but at this point I’m more interested in playing the game than caring about a specific mode. Look at it this way, within a couple of months and further down the road the game will be a different experience. It is far more complete than what Killer Instinct was when that first came out.
Yes Capcom is a business. But any GOOD business knows the power of good and bad PR. Capcom of all companies should know how public relations and perceptions can either make or break you after the shit they went through with SFXT and UMVC3. If they had took it upon themselves to make such an announcment. It would be seen as them caring about the consumer and people’s opinion of them would change for the better. because a lot of people, still have that “Capcom thinks DLC means disc locked content” view when it comes to Capcom and still make “I’ll wait for Insert absurdly long title SFV to come out” jokes.
And it had no story mode what so ever. 5 characters at launch with 6th coming later. KI isn’t a good comparison because it has bare minimum content in comparison to SFV. Not that I agree with the lack of SFV content at launch, but I figured they were pushing the game out the door due to the CPT.
They already said that, just not in those words. They already gave a delightful explanation of what will be added. AKA what’s missing to make your judgment
The content will be there in a month’s time, so that’s not an enormous issue. I wonder how drastically this could affect review scores and word of mouth, and then sales because of it.
I totally agree OP. I was so hyped for the release. I have at least 5 friends who r gettin the game was looking forward 2 all jumping in a lobby together gettin in a chat and just having some fun. Guess wat i cant do that and i cant even spectate matches, in this day and age 4 one of the most popular FGs 2 not have these basic things is just ridiculous. These things r coming in march so yeah thats not 2 bad but when u look at everything that is missing it really is quite a letdown.
Yeah the lobby situation is sad to say the least. The only thing I can suggest, if you are on PS4, is to create a party with your friends as a work around. That way you can still chat while playing SFV.
From a PR/Marketing standpoint, I think Capcom should have pushed the February release as a “soft-release” or “partial release.” And they should have marketed the March release (or later) as the “complete release” or something to that effect.
Communication’s key, but unfortunately you really have to research SFV to even be aware that these updates are coming on a timeline. From a casual fighting game player standpoint, they will buy this game at launch, plug it in and be confused as to the lack of content, look up why, and proceed to complain about being misinformed and disappointed.
Had all of this been advertised to game stores, in television ads and on posters since day 1, then the above mentioned casual would buy this game knowing it won’t be complete until a certain date - meaning they’d have themselves to blame for expecting something that was never promised. (I’d argue that due to the lack of communication on Capcom’s part, there’s an implied promise that the $60 the unbeknownst gamer’s paying will equal a complete game experience…)
With that said, those of us in the know, that have been following Street Fighter V via forums, Twitter, live streams, etc. - we don’t actually have a valid complaint in my opinion. We know that if we want a complete experience, and don’t want to be bothered with an incomplete game, that we don’t have to play it until it’s fully realized in March/June.
We (the fans, the fgc) are getting the core game early for the sake of tournament schedules… that sounds like a gift to me. We get to play the game and not have to wait until March or June to enjoy it - we can do that in just 3 days. I’m more than happy to spend $60 on the game as is because I don’t want to wait until June for a more complete game story mode-wise or features-wise… I want to dive into the game right now.
So yeah, that’s the fucked situation right now. Casuals (which are the majority of players, critics and other talking heads in the gaming industry) are going to shit on the game as being incomplete, very few will take into consideration the reasons why it was released early - and they’re not going to perceive it as a gift as some of us here do…
And to the OP claiming the game being released incomplete is laziness on Capcom’s part: how do you justify that statement? A large team of game developers have been working full-time for a very long time on this product, and it simply will not be completed until March/June. You wouldn’t level laziness against Capcom had the release date been June from the start and the game came out completed in June… From the sounds of things this isn’t a Capcom’s lazy thing - it’s an impatient consumer thing. The only thing you can actually critique Capcom for is their failure to market this situation properly. Other than that, it only makes sense to judge the quality of content for the content provided, and to wait until June to judge the completed product.
