This is pretty sobering. Street Fighter V came in 5th for the month of February for top PSN downloads. It was beaten by Firewatch, Far Cry Primal, Rocket League and the new Naruto game.
That’s actually not surprising. Even with a good launch it’d probably still be behind everything but Firewatch, and Firewatch was hotly anticipated in a way SFV was never going to be.
I didn’t leave it out. I just figured everyone was already familiar with how sales charts work for videogames and I provided a link. For those in this thread that are completely unfamiliar with videogame charts or how to click on links, this is a sales chart based on units sold, not revenue.
So Street Fighter V really hovered between 3-4, and lost out to the only other retail releases of the month on PS4 even though it’s been on the frontpage of the PS store for months, has an exclusive preorder bonus, and was heavily advertised everywhere. It didn’t come in 5th though, revenue wise. It managed to beat out every game that came out 4-6 months ago. So that’s a good thing, I guess.
I don’t understand. Why with a good launch would it be behind everything except Firewatch? Firewatch was the top download, so that would be the last obstacle to overcome, not the first.
The site clearly states that the chart is based on number of downloads. If it was by revenue it would be a sales chart. I would expect stuff like Firewatch to chart higher as it’s not a full rental game like SFV, Far Cry and Naruto so it would get more downloads.
I don’t think anyone has any confusion on why a high end indie exclusive like Firewatch that doesn’t have a retail release would nab the top spot. It’s the other three games it’s under that I was referring to when I said this is sobering, particularly that it’s the third most downloaded retail game of the month, and its competition was meh. Everything after Street Fighter V was stuff that came out last Fall or earlier. It’s sobering that it’s bringing up the rear of new releases even though Sony fans love gobbling up exclusives so they can play their tit for tat war with Xbox fans over who has what.
Changing the argument to revenue doesn’t change the fact that it’s still bringing up the rear. That’s the problem.
The Far Cry game is a spinoff and it’s multiplatform. I think a better reviewed version of SFV would beat the new Far Cry. Rocket League is popular yes, but it was also free on PS+ and it came out a long time ago. A lot of people should own that by now, so I think SFV being behind it says more about SFV’s numbers than it does Rocket League’s popularity. Even with all that said, it was behind Naruto also, which is also multiplatform. That’s not excusable.
Far Cry 4 sold 6 million copies alone. It’s a popular franchise in a way SF just isn’t. The Naruto games are also very popular and based on an extremely popular IP.
The game still rebounded from that though. Naysayers want to believe game is dead in the water now due to a disappointing launch. It can always turn around.
A game that was massively successful recovering is wayyyyy different than a game that was a sales failure recovering. In SFV no one will be around to check out the new patches.
There was only ever going to be a set (low) amount of people buy this anyway. The trick was squeezing the extra few hundred thousand sales from good marketing and launch.
Now you have everyone and their dog making videos about how shit the content is, coupled with user reviews, it’s too late.
Nobody looks at main reviews, they look at user reviews, I do that with anything, cameras, cars , anything.
