I strongly feel they toned the background down as they brought in new elements. In a future update the textures and lighting and depth will come back and the civilians watching on will be more lively as well.
NRS has some weird design choices sometimes. Not that any of their games are bad but they certainly have areas that disappoint me. Some of their input motions are wonky for instance. That said, Injustice has some self lighting effects on characters to make them a bit more noticeable but they also have a bit of a washed out look on some characters colors that make them blend. They should increase the rim lighting a bit or something, it IS there but it could be better. I’d say of all of the recent NRS games Injustice does the best job making characters stand out from backgrounds.
They do a decently good job making hitsparks and blocksparks not obstruct view. One area I feel they falter is making direction of motion more obvious. Like more noticeable smoke effects on jumps/dashes or those comic style motion lines would help a lot in Injustice. It’s a really small detail that SF4 does that you never think about but helps.
MK9 was decent at proper lighting effects, not good but decent.
MKX looks pretty bad at it. Like you can see they are kind of trying to do it but man it needs work.
Killer instinct is really good at lighting their characters to make them stand out from backgrounds. Too bad their move effects, blurs, and hitsparks are so over the top that it heavily masks motion and animations at times.
Check out the Ermac reveal stream (skip to ~17minutes) they have some self lighting effects on chars, it’s kind of soft on cloth and wet on metal. Here is a BIG problem though, check out that zombie that pops out of the water occasionally ~20:22 one shows up. You’ll find your eyes naturally drawn to it as it has a bit brighter skin, more lighting, and like a slight bloom glow on it. That’s not good. I mean players will get used to it, but in terms of design it’s not a good idea IMO.
I know it’s not. I brought it up as another example since it was the only modern non-anime FG I could think of. I guess I probably shouldn’t have since it isn’t NRS and all of the others are.
Now that I think about it, KOF13 is pretty good at it except for like 2-3 stages where it’s fucking awful at, especially with specific color schemes.
Yeah I mean I get why they did it, I too just feel it’s overdone. And I don’t think it looks awful or anything, I just prefer the other way.
As others mentioned, I bet they had to tone down some lighting/texture effects because they now have more stuff going on in the background. It is pretty clear to me from watching the video multiple times, that the overall graphics quality has gone down a bit.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if (as someone else mentioned) that maybe the early build was on some high end PC and this new build was on the PS4.
I agree that is likely the first trailer was probably not run on a PS4, rather a common practice where there is this incredible looking trailer but then the game doesn’t look nearly as good. Well we’ll see how the final product looks, hopefully they are able to bring back all the detail they had in the initial trailer.
The argument that they had to “tone down” the graphics because the original trailer was on a high end PC and the new trailer was on a PS4 is complete BS…there are games running on the PS4 now (the Order, Infamous Second Son, Killzone) that are WAY more graphically intensive than SF5 could ever be. It is NOT a PS4 issue.
.
The visual change (which I’m also not 100% happy with) is Capcom trying to pick the right art style. I also preferred the natural look more than the saturated look. I agree that Chun Li looked better before. The game is over a year away and hopefully they will strike the balance by then
.
In the meanwhile, people need to chill!
I think a lot more goes into the overall presentation and look of a fighting game than the characters and levels. UI, hit sparks/movement effects, announcer, music etc.
Capcom, just take the Alpha 3 or CVS2 UI and announcer and literally just transplant either of them into this game.
You can’t claim that as fact, you have absolutely no clue about it.
MANY games are developed and running on high end PC’s first. This is nothing new in the industry, and with the architecture of PS4/X1 being closer to PC than any console in the past, this is probably going to happen way more now than it did before.
It’s also not surprising in the least that a game that is probably over a year out from releasing doesn’t look as good as a fully polished released PS4 game, even if they are running on the same hardware.
And the reason they do it on high end PC’s early on, is BECAUSE they don’t optimize anything out of the gate. That is all done later on, but they do have to try and set a bar early on as well so that they don’t over promise and under deliver (look at KZ2 on PS3).
There is just as much “BS” with your claim as there is with the one I made (and others have). It’s all speculation at this point.
Agreed. It’s all speculation. But it doesn’t make sense that the graphics we saw in the first trailer (which by no means set the bar) would slow down a PS4. If so the game is already fucked.
For the sake of argument, let’s just say that the graphics in the first build were using more horsepower than the graphics in the 2nd build.
In the 2nd build, they now have more stuff going on in the background. That stuff doesn’t come “free” and requires horsepower from somewhere. So there is always the chance that they had to “make room” for that extra stuff, and did so by dumbing down the lighting and textures.
We also don’t know how much physics are going on in the clothing, which in and of itself, can be using A LOT of power. Remember when NBA2K series had the “free flowing clothing” and how the new consoles (new at the time) allowed them to do that? Who knows, maybe they are using something like that for the hair and clothing, which uses more power than people realize. Kind of like the TressFX hair on Lara Croft in that last Tomb Raider game.
Again, all an assumption, but there is a possibility that at this point in the dev process they are just brute forcing stuff to get it where they want it to be right now and not caring about optimization.
So who knows if them adding the stuff in the background with the graphics in the 1st build, put it over the threshold of what they wanted to show off. We simply don’t know.
It’s all really going to be a moot point anyways because when the game is out, it’s 100% going to run at 60fps and will look good.
What the f*ck, people are saying the graphics have been “toned down”? Disregarding the new “celshaded” look, the new build looks to have a lot better lighting, texures, some touch ups on te models, though mostly the same. Some extra effects. The overall graphics have gone UP, even disregarding the new “celshaded look” like i said before.
Anyway, i hope some weather effects will be added. In T7 you saw some snow which looked good, but the rain looked great.
The graphics are definitely gonna change till the release. We can just wait and see. I wanna see some Bison footage ASAP ! He’ll be a killer in this one
This happens all the time with early versions compared to later builds for many video games its becoming some sort of game development tradition. The early graphic were better imho the only thing I didn’t like was how everything was on the slower side. Characters blended perfectly with the stage lighting and backgrounds in the early build but this new build looks like SF4 on steroids it’s like Capcom giving the finger to Unreal Engine and sticking with their trashy design decisions like we’re still in 2007 !!
