Graphics were getting better, sure, but that was due to improvements in the technology of the platforms running the games, not because the version iterations intrinsically demanded it.
No, I am a little surprised that the art direction of the character models for 5 draw so heavily from 4, but aside from that there wasn’t going to be a huge graphical upgrade because the fact of the matter is the PS3/XB360 generation still have very good graphics relatively speaking compared to the current gen.
Gotta agree with this. Capcom has found a style they like, and they stuck with it for aesthetic reasons. They clearly took the effort to remodel, but the fact they still went with the same style shows it’s an AESTHETIC choice, not a technical one.
It’s kind of nice they have a style that they can call their own. It’ll age much better than grimdark/gritty/realistic models and won’t get lost in the visual sea of anime fighters.
It’s unfortunate some people don’t like how SF4 looked, but honestly if it weren’t for the cartoony style the game would not have aged visually nearly as well. Look up “realistic” or “edgy” graphics from 2008. They’re not so nice now, are they?
looks like a new artstyle to me. maybe the lighting is too similar to 4 and that stupid oil slick on ryu’s tatsu is also reminiscent of 4 but overall it’s drastically different. their faces, hands, clothes, and the fact they don’t look like animated wooden toys, makes this look a lot different. i hope they play around with the lighting to make it “feel” different enough for most people.
I agree this shouldn’t even be called SF5. Its just SF4 all over again with higher res textures and adavanced lighting. Out of all the options Capcom had with this title they chose the lamest path. Makes ya wonder how much more they feel the need to dumb this franchise down for monetary gain.
I wonder what kind of crazy system mechanic we’ll get this time. I actually really like the FADC mechanic for use in extending combos/applying pressure, so I hope something similar comes back (and no canceling reversals). Focus itself can die in a fire though. Given me and tons of players bad habits.
the concept behind the art direction in sf4 was fine. it was the poor execution of it that made the game disgusting to look at. this appears better to me but the animations still look like they were lifted from sf4. hopefully theyre placeholders. the basics like physics/general movement and how animations are implemented need to be drastically improved over sf4 before any details are worried about. because once thats finalized theres no going back. mechanics and hitboxes can always be adjusted later, but if a game plays like its underwater on the first try, it always will.
also block strings dont really exist in sf3 if you stop blocking something like chun li’s sa2 you get hit by it, you dont keep blocking. if ypu have to red parry something thats as close as you would get.
I like the art style here. Ryu looks like a battle-hardened badass. Definitely doesn’t look like an “SF4 redo” to me. Will reserve further judgment for the entirety of SF5 for video clips longer than 5 seconds.
So the characters still have that deformed style?
Im not a fan of Chun Lis hands being bigger than her head. Those proportions give off a masculine vibe.
