Street Fighter V Lounge "We on South Central crack addict status"

Interesting. I vaguely recall a PS3 was the basis for a previous Tekken arcade release also. This might well be a viable option for SF5. Funny to consider that if so, it would still mean the game is only spread across two platforms - PC and PS4.

This game looks awesome, I can’t wait for a unified player base

These are technically the same thing anyway in terms of hardware. The only difference is that one runs a custom build of Linux.

Yeah I remember the thing about handing off the bandana like @SAOTOME2U also mentioned, couldn’t remember if it was from Alpha or SF movie though. My point was more that they gave him a bandana at all. It felt like they took the tiniest step possible with changing his design by pretty much only changing a couple of his colors (hair, bandana, ect) and slightly rounding his face out. I mean Akuma’s gray streaks in SF3 were something I liked but they still played it EXTREMELY safe with him, as safe as they could without not changing anything. Ken in Alpha however was a much bigger change IMO. I mean Ken was always a little longer haired but nothing like that.

Well you have to be careful what you do with the trademark character of the series… Since Ryu pretty much carries the whole sf franchise, it is ok to change up characters like Ken, Chun li, Cammy etc.
I dont see any franchise change their main character in the next time. It’s like an unwritten rule that you dont change your trademark character, Nintendo hasnt done it with Mario, Capcom wont do it with Ryu, Sega didnt do it with Sonic, etc.
trademarks stay the same, sidekicks may be changed

I also think Ken’s hair in Alpha looks completely shitty. I mean, I appreciate that they changed I guess? But, it looks like fucking garbage. Come on, Ken. Get your shit together. You look like an asshole.

Or I guess since that was Alpha, he actually GOT his shit together. Good on you, Ken. You looked like a dweebus.

Edit: Sega did kinda change Sonic up. He used to be much chubbier, and more uh, … I don’t know. “Classic” looking. They made him edgier, leaner and more anime in the Adventure series and have since stuck with that.

And, well. They also decided to make his games complete shit.

So. -Shrug-

Make Ryu a bishounen and outsource the game to the Sonic Boom team

I actually meant design wise, they obviously changed the artstyle, but they didnt suddenly give him trousers or a cap or something like that, it was always red shoes, white gloves, blue furr and (depending on point of view) 3-4 hair spikes.
But I know what you mean, they lengthend his legs/lower body (probably to emphasize that he’s a runner?). But I that is something most people dont even recognize at first glance. They’re still like “oh that’s sonic!”

You basically have to imagine yourself as the parent that has no knowledge about the recent scene. You’re more likely to buy stuff for your kids if you remember the characters from your youth. Mario looked the same for generations and parents that recognized him are more likely to buy the game for their kids as well. If mario suddenly changed artstyle, wouldnt wear a hat, cut of his mustache, parents wouldnt even recognize him at first glance… (except for the name, but humans like visual stuff)

I was actually sitting here thinking what could they possibly do to Ryu to change him up a little bit, but still keep his design so that you know that’s Ryu and I couldn’t think of much. I only came up with the following:

  1. Maybe letting his hair grow a little, or maybe giving him a couple gray hairs.
  2. Maybe giving him beads like what Gouken and Akuma have to assert his grasp of the Satsui no Hadou and his growth.

I honestly can’t think of much to change on him without making it seem like a drastic change. Other characters can change here and there, like I’d love for Chun-Li to remain in her Alpha costume, or the outfit she wore in her SF2 ending when she broke up the bar fight. Ken could tuck his sleeves instead of having them torn off, or better yet, his first SF4 alternate (which was gonna be King Cobra’s) can be his new main costume. I too like those slight changes you can see where the company acknowledges this is the same character, but we’ve given him shoes, a necklace, some pants, etc.

Has the lack of info been so bad that we’re now talking about Sonic the Hedgehog?

Definitely. We need more teasers and info, otherwise we end up talking about the weirdest stuff :frowning:

And those teasers need some new stuff in em! New stage or a new character would go a long way. We don’t have much comparative stuff yet to see how the style of the game might develop. Need more variations to extrapolate what future stuff might look like.

I mean you usually need at least 3 things to figure out a pattern and all we’ve seen is 2 characters

Jin from Tekken had his entire fighting style changed with most of his old moves from the prior games going to DevilJin. It’s not always a bad thing to experiment with the main character(s) to add variety, but competitive gameplay-wise for SF, I think a lot of players will still want the traditional shoto/ansatsuken-style moveset available as an option.

Jin had his style changed because he ripped it from Kazuya who came back in Tekken 4.

Correction. Kazuya technically “came back” in TTT1 (where Jin still retained the Advanced Mishima-Ryu variants anyway).

Yeah but EVERYONE comes back for the Tag Tourneys, even with similar styles.

In T4 they had to give people a reason to just not go back to Kazuya. They just made that reason a BIT too strong…

Jin Pre-T4 was a mix of both Kazuya and Jun with a few new unique strings/moves. He had enough differences to set him apart from Kazuya and that style pretty much returned in the form of Devil Jin, regardless of Kazuya’s existence in the game.

This is veering off topic though, I was just saying it as an example of it not necessarily being a bad thing to change up what people are used to with their character, even if it’s a main character in a series. Capcom does do it for some characters too, but not so much with Ryu (or Guile lol).

I think every game should have something SIMILAR to a shoto style, probably not multiple ones but something similar. It also doesn’t have to be the exact shoto style but like it could be a partial version (DP+Tatsu+Air Tatsu but no fireball or DP+Fireball no tatsu but has similar normals ect). As I said though, I don’t really see much need for more than 2 shoto variations in a game, 1 is probably enough if the cast is ~12-18 chars.

I think we need to define what is a shoto first. Is a shoto a character with a fireball, DP and a forward advancing special ?

In that case Poison, Sagat, Seth are all almost a shotos. I honestly (at least in SF4) do not see Ryu and Ken being more similar to each other than say Ryu and Sagat. Yeah Ryu and Ken both have fireball, DP and Tatsu but the specials behave so differently now that they cant be titled the same move anymore. Not to mention the fact that they have different normals.

Unless we are strictly speaking of story related definitions, I do not see Ryu,Ken and Akuma being under the same banner gameplay wise.

The way i see it is, there are shotos and there are shoto like characters.

Shotos are ken,ryu,dan,akuma

“Shoto like” characters are sakura/sagat

There are more shotos and shoto likes, but i tend to generalize like that. Because with the shoto likes, its kind of disengenuous to totally separate them or include them in the shoto world. They are hybrid shotos that are specialized to play in very different manners than in the traditional shoto style characterized by a more all aroundness in general.
