Man what an epic issue, fight, and ending. It left me wanting more. It was so difficult trying decide what cover I wanted, but i opted with the Ryu cover. I really thought Ryu was gonna hit Akuma with the metsu hadoken but im glad he didnt. Did not see the Gouken return (epic). for some odd reason I had like some theme music in my head when I saw Gouken. Nice ending for all the other characters. Nice way to close the turbo series. Im definetly looking for to Sf3 and hopefully a super street fighter 4 comic.
Yeah the ending was pretty crazy! I’m not sure how in the heck it makes sense in Udon’s world since Gouken was buried LOL but maybe SSF4 will shed some light on some of that since the game still hasn’t explained how Gouken is still walking around? Or not? :looney:
Anyway aside from people throwing fights or withdrawing since I don’t care for that sort of thing (I like violence and want everyone to get their asses beat down lol :badboy:) I quite liked how Udon handled the SF2 Tourney. :clapdos:
Can’t wait for Udon to cover the SF3 Tourney! The entire comic should focus mainly on Remy!!! WHO’S WITH ME? cricket noise cricket noise cricket noise cricket noise cricket noise Eh I tried…
Indeed a great issue and a great wrap up to the Udon SF2 story that has been going on for years now.
Gouken out of nowhere and nailing Akuma with what looked like a shin shoryuken was the highlight of the issue. Gouken being alive has never been really explained in street fighter 4, so it works having him be here. (As Sano said, here is to hoping that they go more into why he is alive in SSF4):looney:
Also I loved the bro-fist at the end.:2p:
I have high hopes if Udon ever does get around to the Street Fighter 3 comic. In addition, hopefully we will get to see more legend books after the Ibuki one is wrapped up.
I liked it. It was a good way to end it. Ryu’s line about winning even though he didn’t beat Akuma was a good one. I’m not sure exactly why Chun Li was reporting the whereabouts of random fighters to her superior, I guess they needed to be monitored since they had been under Bison’s mind control, but no mention of that was made.
My only real problem: So Gouken just appears in his first panel and then he… runs away? I felt it was unnecessary since it kind of fubar’d the magic of his return and his epic aura with this comical “exit, stage left” panel. If Ryu had just turned around and Gouken was gone I think it would have maintained the tone of that scene a little better.
Otherwise, good issue and a nice wrap-up to the whole series.
Finally the Shadaloo arc ends, and what an end! Loved Gouken’s surprise appearance. How was he resurrected? By Ingrid? Was it his spirit that willed itself into physical form? IDK, but this issue was epic! worth 3.99x2
This is gonna be long.
This issue was alright. I wasn’t really anticipating it all that much cause nothing is more boring to me than seeing two shotos fight. Still, I liked the resolution to Ryus "dark hadou arc. It’s good that he decides just to never use it instead of the lame idea Capcom seems trying to make happen in SF4 by having Gouken seal it off. Also, I kinda liked the Deus Ex Machina appearance by Gouken. Since he had a blue aura about him, I choose to believe he pulled a “Jedi” and he’s somehow able to maintain and manifest his spirit since his death at the hands of Akuma. So I got no problems with him channeling his inner Yoda. I kinda like that idea rather than the one that seems to be being presented in SF4 in that he’s actually been physically resurrected or was just “asleep” the whole time.
The coda for all the fighters left me feeling satisfied, so I felt it did a good job. Now that the whole series is over, I think, I’ll post my thoughts on the arc as a whole.
The art. I think it was mistake to not use the traditional inking methods to color Chamba’s work. It was alright at first but by issue 7 or 8 it was painfully obvious to me that the lack of a strong black outline on the characters wasn’t working. It tended to make things bleed and blur. You combine that with the utter lack of backgrounds(and the few times they were included they were a hazy blur), it just became too hard to follow the action and what was going on the page sometimes. I shouldn’t have to reread a page 3-4 times just to try to decipher what is going on. It should have been more defined like in the previous Street Fighter and Street Fighter II series. Still, I think Chamba has a much better style than Lee and Tsang. He’s better at movement and getting the feel of the action in the fight scenes. I also like how his musculature on his characters isn’t over the top like Lee’s was.
The fights. The qualifying fights were alright and got decent page time, but I think what people really wanted to see were the the main fighters fighting each other, not a bunch of superflous characters. Page space was obviously limiting, but it was really disappointing to see that by the time the fighters got to the island, many fights were just 1-2 pages. Big letdown. This shoulda been reversed. Instead of the qualifying fights being long, those should’ve been short, while the main fights on the island shoulda been longer. Also people purposely losing was kinda lame too. And way too many Cammy fights. Why did she get so many? I’d rather have others being featured than one who’s already hogged so much of the comic panel time.
As a whole, I think i’d give the Turbo arc a 6.5, or maybe a 7. The story came together alright, but many of the fights, which were the main draw, didn’t really live up to expectations. I think they could have been better than this. And again, the art. A few changes could have made the art more servicable. Still Udon did a good job of bringing togehter Street Fighters 2’s huge clusterfuck of a story from the games, and that alone is a worthy feat.
I enjoyed it more than recent issues, but the final fight in Ryu Final was better. It seemed to me that all that was established was that Ryu still can’t beat Akuma even after all he’s learned, and without the Satsui no Hadou, he’s still physically no match for Akuma. That’s not the message I’d like to get from our main protagonist who by all means should triumph over the bad guy. If they had even fought to a draw I’d be willing to accept that more.
But it had closure. If this was really the end to it all, then I would be content with it. Not elated exactly, but content.
EDIT: Looking back on it, I guess we could say Ryu got a moral victory over Akuma, as it looked like he was just letting Akuma take out his frustrations on him knowing that he won where it mattered. Still, Ryu got trounced most of the fight and he should have at least nailed him with a more powerful attack that would cause Akuma to trounce him before unlocking the Satsui no Hadou for a brief moment.
Just read the issue and i’m satisfied with the ending. Just a little confused though, am I the only one that made the volcanic setting connection to the SF4 intro between Gouken and Akuma? Didn’t Akuma SGS him there? Does that mean he killed him not once but twice? If that’s the case then why is he still around?..Total confusion, but it was nice to see Akuma keep that reputation of the ultimate bad guy by not losing. For a minute I actually thought Ryu would pull this out, but to my suprise Akuma won.
I enjoyed it.
Probably not, I did too. I remember people bitching about that stage not making sense and raised an eyebrow.
The SF comics will soon have a tie in with THE CROW… :razzy:
Why does Udon insist on portraying Dee-Jay as a capoeirista when he is a kickboxer. I’ve never once seen him ginga or even do a cartwheel. And what’s with Turbo’s crappy lighting? it’s always WAY overboard on the white, like lightning’s striking somewhere off-panel in nearly every panel, while the rest of the colors look faded and old. Chamba, give that crap a rest, please!
