Streaming and Recording Guide/Research

Streaming is a money pit… Welcome aboard!

What are the current spec’s of your computer? Do you have a free PCI-E 1x slot? Or a laptop?

Depending on what you’ve got you can choose the product that best fits your budget and specs. There are basically four main companies you’re looking at here…

Blackmagic HD - $200 and up
AverMedia HD - $95 and up
Hauppauge HD - $200 and up
Dazzle SD - $50 and up

Depending on your budget and needs you can go from there. This is just for a capture card, if you want to go into audio hardware and splitters / adapters you’re looking at another chunk of cash to budget in.

I’m roughly about $3,000 - $4,000 deep (over a 2 year period) in my my streaming setup and I’m a hobbyist who runs local fighting game tournaments. (including my computer of course) You can probably build a decent streaming rig for around $400 - $500 for starters if you’re going for HD stuff, depending on the current specs of your computer. You’ll need to decide what features you want on your stream by choosing the right software. Xsplit is the most cost effective solution at $80 / 3 years right now. Wirecast is roughly $500 I think, FME is free but lacking in features.

Here is a quick rundown of my setup I just posted on YouTube. I’ll most likely be making a more in-depth video tutorial on how my stuff is setup eventually but here is a quick and dirty one focused on HD capture with audio comentary.

Which is why I said “unless you only have composite ones”. Implying that he would need to buy a component or HDMI cable to stream in progressive.

Question about the Black Magic Intensity Pro and the Wii/PS2:

Certain games and stuff have a 16:9 mode that isn’t TECHNICALLY 16:9., it’s pretty much counting on your TV to stretch it for you (and the effect is good) but the BMIP doesn’t seem to have that function, anyone ever try and get some fake widescreen?

Can’t you use whichever streaming/recording program to stretch it out?

Streaming yes (Wirecast)

Recording no (Media Express)

Also, using component cables is a major issue (it’s just been really weird playing with the settings), plus gotta use 480i. Heavily considering changing the component video into HDMI at end to be able to use 480p (Analog audio so I can use a mixer).

You want to stretch it to a 16:9 resolution in post-production. Capture it in 4:3, and use whatever video editing software you have to re-encode it at 16:9 resolution via stretching. How to do so depends on your software, but basically what’s happening is you’re doubling some pixels in post anyway; “capturing” at 4:3 is just capturing what’s really being output.

Sounds good. Thanks a lot.

Hey guys is there any way to have xbox 360 be played through my pc so i can just alt tab ? And also at the same time split the xbox to another computer my brothers so we can both play UMvC3 together? A cheap way would be nice but if i do need a capture card is there maybe an option within hdmi splitters to toggle between the xbox and pc output?

2 questions:

  • I need an HDCP stripper to stream/record from PS3. From what I hear, HD Fury is what I’m looking for, but there are several revisions of the device and a huge price difference between them. Any particular one that I need? My capture device (Matrox MXO2 Mini) will accept HDMI or component as long as I can strip out HDCP.

  • I’m looking to pick up an external HDD primarily for local recording/archival purposes. My laptop has eSATA and USB 3.0 ports. Any particular recommendations/advice?

On your first point: Just split the signal 2 ways and convert the other HDMI into component using a powered converter (then back to HDMI if you’re really dead set on using HDMI)

Actually, that reminds me of something I should have mentioned. I’ve tried doing just that with two different converters (here and here), but it doesn’t work. In both cases, the capture device I’m using detects that there’s a device connected, but no picture is shown and it’s labeled as an “invalid signal.”

See, here’s MY problem with that statement, I have used both of those (Amazon one is really no good for the component part) and I got 720p capture going just fine.

I’m using a black magic intensity pro, what do you have?

This might sound like a dumb question, but did you make sure your console was set at a recommended resolution for your cap card and display sources?

Also, for some weird reason, I bought this Chinese HDMI distribution amp, and it strips HDCP by itself. Tested it with a PS3 and a few other HDCP compliant devices and it just works. I can’t find the specific model, but knowing it’s from China, there’s BOUND to be copies of it floating on ebay.

Everything from source to destination is set to 720p.

I’ll need to dig this stuff out and give it another go to see if I can narrow down the problem. My capture device is an MXO2 Mini.

Buying a mixer this weekend, and looking at tournament-quality mics, having a hard time deciding between mics or headsets. I don’t know much about headsets in general, anyone have recommendations of either?

See if it’ll go with just straight component from the PS3. Could be the device.

Actually I’m testing this thing with a number of input devices right now and I’m having trouble to get it to detect anything over 480p through component. So forget about this for the time being. I’m going to try and borrow some other capture equipment from a friend in the future to see if I can find an alternate solution.

Anyway, can anybody help me out with this:

As far as external goes, if you don’t need it to be writing to disc live (as in, you just download the archive off whatever site you’re using) then anything goes.

I’m not 1000000% sure but I think a 72000 RPM or a SSD running off USB 3.0 should do the trick nicely if it’s being done live.

Alternatively, you can always get an internal 72000 RPM HDD and use that inside your PC.

This is going to be used for recording 720p video live, preferably uncompressed. Otherwise I wouldn’t have needed to ask. :stuck_out_tongue:

It also has to be an external solution (either eSATA or USB3.0), as I’m using a laptop for this. Jaxel recommends hard drives arranged in a RAID-0 array with a high per-platter density, but I’m not sure if it’s possible to arrange external drives in that kind of array and accurate density values / write speeds seem to be rarely advertised from what I can tell.

I’m stumped man. Definitely don’t wanna lead you the wrong way on this one.
