I sure have, and I didn’t like it. A glass of red wine now and again? Maybe some champagne? Yeah that’s fine. It’s elegent, classy and somewhat good for your blood pressure. Binge drinking just for the sake of being naughty and getting drunk? No. I personally do not like the taste of alcohol full stop, unless it’s diluted with something else. It always leaves me with a weird taste in my throat which I find unpleasant.
Every time you inhale smoke, you do damage to your lungs. Likewise, every time you drink in excess, you kill off many brain cells. There are other proven long-term effects as well. You can say “ooooh…but I only do a little bit here and there” guess what, it still adds up, and it still becomes an addiction if you end up doing it even remotely regularly. Fact is, it shouldn’t be done at all. People struggle too hard to try and justify shit like this, and that also annoys me.
Then there’s just the mentality behind drugs that irks me. I don’t need or want these substances to be able to enjoy myself. Most of the time, the reason people take them is becase they’re either trying to be trendy or rebellious. I think it’s much more impressive if an artist can conjure up fantastic images without the help of hallucogens. So what if it feels good? You know what also feels good? Playing baseball. Or video games, or drawing.
I’ve done weed once at a party, and after that I never wanted anything to do with it again. I get a smug sense of satisfaction from being the guy who doesn’t need or want that shit. I won’t lie.
Also, that thing about ‘you can’t know what wrong is if you haven’t experienced it blah blah blah’ is absolute bullshit and you know it. As humans we are intelligent enough to distinguish right from wrong, even if it’s so much as a gut feeling. But for some reason, people seem to think it’s interesting to try and blur the lines even more, and justify what they secretly know is wrong. Of course if you like doing it, you’re going to find excuses for it.
What kind of ridiculous, baseless assumptions are you making about me? Why are you so convinced that I’m an angsty teen with something to prove? You also aren’t really addressing any of my questions directly, which leads me to believe that you don’t have any answers. You just admitted to doing exactly what I do; drinking responsibly in moderation. I don’t smoke, tobacco or anything else, because I’m a vocalist and I don’t want to damage my vocal chords. I used to think exactly like you, but I was wrong. I decided I couldn’t responsibly form an opinion about drugs and alcohol without trying them myself. You’ve tried drinking, and it’s not for you. I respect that, I really do. Now shut the fuck up.
I agree with you, modern drug culture is pretty fucking stupid; I would hate to be a stoner because I don’t want to be defined by a substance. In the same way I don’t want to be called a “gamer;” it doesn’t fully capture who I am. I just like playing video games. And I’m afraid examples of straight edge art are few and far between. There are certain parts of your brain you simply don’t have access to, whether it’s because of social conditioning, or because thoughts of SSF4 balance tweaks are distracting you. Drugs don’t create new images for these artists, they just unlock images that were already there.
Edit: Didn’t catch the sneaky edits you made at the end of your post, but I won’t address them because there’s so much wrong with them that I don’t know where to start. And sorry to say, but this post you made suggests you’ve never been to a party….
Edit x2: Whenever we meet in a thread, we seem to have an argument about something. I think we’d make good friends.
The idea of drugs “just being wrong” is a social construct, pure and simple. We view them as wrong because, from a young age, we are told that they are wrong. We are told that they are illegal and that they will kill you. We are told that if you do drugs, you are a bad person, a junkie. The proof for this lies in the fact that millions of people think drugs are “wrong” but think there’s nothing wrong with Alcohol, a drug, unless you’re a kid, at which point, it’s wrong.
It’s funny how nowadays the US Drug and Food Administration has promoted diet pills, Ritalin, and Painkillers such as Oxycontin in the country. Apparently they didn’t realize that these legal drugs can be so addictive and detrimental to one’s health if consumed heavily.
I’m wearing a Minor Threat shirt while reading this but most of my gaming homies are stoners and drunks and I’m cool with it. don’t know why anybody would want to band together with other straight edge people just cause they are.
Also is dat shit.
The reason society has evolved to believe that these substances are wrong is because they do effect people negitively and they are addictive/tempting for people to try. That notoriousness is there for a reason. There’s no reason why people always have to question it either. I’m not saying I agree with mass consumption of alcohol either, but consuming alcohol in small amounts is still less damaging than smoking in small amounts, whether it be tobacco or weed. It’s still a travesty that tobacco hasn’t been outlawed yet, and the only reason it hasn’t is because it isn’t mind-altering (other than it makes lots of money.)
It seems to me too, that People always pull that ‘social construct’ card out of their asses to try and justify their habit.
And yeah, conscript drugs are bad if you become reliant on them, but the connotations of using them is not the same as recreational drugs. There’s a medical purpose for conscription drugs. Some people say that some recreational drugs have medicinal properties, but the reason most people take them is just for the flaming sake of it. And why the hell would you use those for medicinal purposes anyway when there are legal alternatives that are probably more effective and easier to aquire? Ones which aren’t depressants/halucinogens and are made for the specific purpose of treating that ailment.
It also doesn’t change the fact that even if the nicotine/hallucigens isn’t going to fuck you up (which it does) then the smoke is still very bad for your lungs. Doesn’t matter what you are smoking. Human lungs were not designed for breathing in smoke directly! Your kidneys were designed to filter incoming liquid substances, so drinking alcohol is slightly more functional by comparison. Still stupid though.
And Tofu, I’m not critising YOU or making assumptions about YOU specifically! You’re reading my posts wrong here. When I say “Every time you inhale smoke” I’m speaking in general terms, using the word ‘you’ to refer to a group. I probably should have said it as “Every time someone inhales smoke”
Wrong. Tobacco is mind altering. And you should always question things rather than just accepting them. Some drugs effect people negatively, and some don’t.
Another misconception that “straight edge” people use to try and claim the moral high ground is the idea of a “habit.” I haven’t smoked anything in years, and when I did it was only every couple months or so. Does this constitute a habit? I’d say not, yet I’m a strong proponent not only of legalizing marijuana along with select few other illegal drugs, but of education on the REAL effects of drugs like marijuana.
Your point?
Anyways, I’ll leave you with a couple questions.
Opinions on ecstacy? Throw it in the same category as illegal drugs?
Regardless of all of this, The drug culture mentality still shits me and I think all of it should never be made legal. If anything, we need to outlaw more stuff. Why the hell would you want to legalise more of it? God, I do not want to have to deal with even more mainstream drugs. That’s the day the world goes to shit.
Extacy: yes, throw it in there and keep it there.
Me take perscription drugs: I’ve never had the need to take perscription drugs other than a puffer for my asthema for when I was a kid, and some disinfectant ear drops for when I got tropical ear after my first ill-fated attempt at snorkelling. Other than that I take vitamin suppliments like garlic and fish oil. I’ve never had an asprin.
Wow i am going to think twice posting a thread like this again. I can see that straight edge is a touch subject. I will be re doing every thing, thanks every for your feed baks and comments.
