STR Presents: X-Mania USA AND Tournament of Legends II @ EVO 2014

The tourney at Arcade Legacy was a great one for midwest ST!

GGS to Immortal (wish we could have actually played in the brackets, but you won, so you better make it to EVO =p), roybisel with his tight Ryu, Ghaleon and nomrah for being as awesome and gracious as ever, SlyRy for the great matches toward the end, mad possum for representing aggressive Honda (and finally meeting in person), Llamah finally in-person as well (nice Chun!)…such a good time.

The tournament was a Chun-fest for most of the earlier rounds; it was crazy. I played O.Chun for most of the event and did very well with her, considering her shortcomings and my serious lack of practice. Switched to N.Chun once against roybisel’s Ryu, then later to O.Hawk against SlyRy to make that a mirror match.

Forgot who I played first, but second round I squeaked by mad possum, then nomrah’s formidable DeeJay to make it to top eight. roybisel had my number; he had plenty of practice against Chuns all day…not that he needed it, because he’s really good. Felt good to get some time in with him, though, and I did my fair share of damage before he knocked me into the back half of the brackets.

Went immediately back up against SlyRy’s well-tuned O.Hawk, and ended up getting cornered too often. Need to get that muscle memory back; he was getting in on my O.Chun for free eventually. Great Hawk, man. I switched up by picking his own character against him, since I am pretty on-point with how to handle that match, but again, his experience prevailed. I actually got a bit frustrated during the end of this, as I blatantly screwed up execution twice; once by jumping on accident at the end of a round, and another where I jumped when I simply meant to Rising Hawk (and gut punished accordingly).

At one point I walked back from the main arcade to the tournament floor and apparently missed some gasp drama, as Diego(?) had lost, and fumed up enough to shit talk his opponent, then call his girlfriend a bitch. Heh.

Miguel from Chicago really played the best N.Chun all day, and deserved to place as highly as he did for sure. Way to grind those out!

Pimp Sir Richard…I’ve seen him at events before, and he plays some great new shoto and Chun games. Some of the best anti-cross-up reversal DPs, man.

The matches between Immortal and roybisel were great. Always a pleasure to behold that spectacle. Everyone’s execution was a bit rusty, though, haha. I dropped my share, especially against SlyRy, but man, you could hear roy’s frustration when his jab combo into super came out as a standard rush punch. He ran it all the way back to the very end, though, but of course Immortal with his zig-zag wall dive madness, amazing reflexes, and truckload of patience prevailed.

It just felt so good to play with people of that caliber again. Great games, again, and THANK YOU to everyone who helped make it happen. Can’t wait to see what happens at EVO!

Congrats for my boy stplayah for winning NWM VI .

Ask ur boy if he wants to mm me at evo
