Stop being internet warriors and go to tournaments

Oh yes, you’re the other Greater Minnesota Hawk. I dont have a job…or a car. But I have a friend with both. I’m a moocher. I think the real T. Hawk would be proud.

There aren’t many tournaments here in the UK, the only major one is SVB and I couldn’t attend that one due to work :[ I attend tournaments they put on at my old University which has a small scene of players but really online is mostly all I can get.

Because spending more time on my studies is inexcusable right?

I’m a music major… I study more than most likely a lot of you and I still find time to go out and support the FG community =/

Point is, if you want to do it, you will. If not, there is not me or anyone convincing you as to why you should.

Shoutouts to BlueBlazer up at Toronto Fighting Game Championship. It seemed like you were a bit nervous about being on stream cause you were playing super duper passive and not threatening him or challenging him. But mad props to just gettin off your ass and going out to represent. How’d you do the rest of the tournament? I only saw your match against that Rufus player.

Oh man that was Blue!?

That was at like 3:30am here in the UK and I was in a Taxi drunk off my face with a couple of friends and I was watching the stream on my phone!

Nah, I wasn’t nervous I just played like shit cause I was tired/felt like shit. My first match was at like 7 and then that match was at 10:30. I played it really bad and I was pissed for the rest of the night cause I know I could have at least played better. And it was against one of the guys who’s taught me a lot of stuff in the SF4 series lol. But yeah, I donked it pretty badly.

But I beat Combofiend in a money match 3-1 so I’m happy, even though he ran it back with Guy and I lost 3-2 lol.

Good shit man!

Last year I lived in Orlando and decided to go to CEO, which was my first major and first real tournament (I destroyed a few small convention tournaments but that wasn’t real competition). It was the most fun I had in a long time, and even though I got destroyed when the actual tourney started (lost to some guy by the name of “The Game”, and had to face Ryan Hunter in losers) I did very well in casuals and still had a blast. After that event I felt like I had learned so much and that I still had so much to learn. Right now I live in a small town between Albany and Syracuse, and about 3 hours away from NYC. Now that I have a more stable source of income I plan to go there for some of their bigger events when I can. I really feel a drive to revive the adrenaline rush you get from seeing crazy stuff go down in person, and meet people who get just as hype about it as you do. If you’re missing out on tournaments you’re missing out on not only a great opportunity to represent your character, but a hell of a good time in general.

So I’m with Joe, if you haven’t been able to go to these events you need to find a way to get yourself to one, for the experience alone.

ill start to participate in championships here in brazil, since we dont have any BIG though with these japanese american pro players, but i will represent hawk, and maybe in january JSMASTER is comming here to participate in a big one

Dude I completely understand. I’m 25, I got student loans, a fiance I barely get to see as much as I like on some days, and transportation to any of the decent tourneys is taxing because I live in Washington, DC where there is practically no scene and I don’t drive. The most I get to do and go out to any kind of tournament is at the University of MD. And while we get some fairly good competition I’ve played most of the people there and are familiar with most if not everyone’s style. They do a league every other friday until the end of semester tourney happens, but like i said it’s me mostly playing the same competition with not much diversity. And thank you dude for reppin’ the pad players! And in all honesty when you move up in the rankings or even go to Endless Battle you can be fairly fortunate enough to play people who could be considered tourney material. And even though I have my “excuses” I’ll hopefully be going to Anime Weekend Atlanta this week to compete in a tourney there. It might not be one of the bigger tournaments, but it’s still a tourney right?

People in the USA have no excuse for missing tourneys like EVO. Try getting to a tournament from Finland.

I have registered for a tournament in Manchester, UK at the end of this month! It’ll be my first non-local tournament, looking at around 70+ sign-ups so far. Dunno if there’s gonna be streaming but I’ll try and have someone record my matches.

There are weekly and monthly tournaments in Baltimore, less than an hour away from you. There are people that come up weekly from further than DC (Reston, Alexandria, etc.). There are tournaments in Fairfax from time to time also.

Honestly, you live smack in the middle of a fairly vibrant scene… filled with plenty of people that are willing to give rides to complete strangers.

I totally understand the issue with scarce time… but the part about there being “practically no scene” is completely false.

I mean… if you need/expect your scene to be within walking distance… then yeah… but if you have realistic expectations, there is a scene well within reach. There are metro-accessible tournaments and gatherings, and plenty of people with room in their cars for the ones that aren’t.

Im still using Hawk ATM and will be using him at Seasons Beatings this Sat.

Ok well as far as fairfax, va goes then please somebody let me know because that may be metro accessible, but there are other factors to take into account. So given if most if not all grounds are covered then i could possibly show up there.

And to retort against what you said about b-more being less than an hour away is completely false. I actually live in the non-state of Washington, DC (not MD or VA) And if you are to say that D.C. includes the 2 states MD and VA plus DC itself then that is not a fact and please for anybody who reads this please know that DC is it’s own separate entity outside of MD and VA. And for one that’s how i know where I’m at does not have a thriving scene. Second off my friend lives in Bowie, Md which is closer to Baltimore than where I’m at and it still takes almost a good hour to get there from Bowie, so if it takes him almost an hour… well i’ll let you do the math.

And just letting you know from my experience I’ve asked some people for rides home and when asked where I lived and then gave them my response most say that where I live is far out of the way and they don’t end up giving me a ride. The only “stranger” I asked for a ride was Devil Jin and fortunately he was cool enough of a guy to drive me home despite it being fairly far out of his way. And as far as getting there I suppose I could find some people( possibly Devil JIn if he goes) here on the forums somehow that is going and see if they could give me a ride there and back. And then there lies the rub of what day the tournament is which can conflict with mine or the driver’s schedule.

Also (sticking with the day and times of the tourney) it depends on if I can really afford to get out there because if it’s on a weekday and the tournament doesn’t start until later in the day around let’s say 7 or 8, it might take a while for the thing to start and end, and given how far i’ve made it and am still in the tourney it would suck to leave early especially if i put down money because trains stop running at midnight or even the bus or combination of both don’t run as long as need be. So all and all even the metro can be a little tricky if you know what it’s really like to take metro to and from certain areas.

So if you or anyone else wants to be kind enough to let somebody know when and where tournaments are happening within my area and if any of you all are going so that I may possibly get a ride then that would be much appreciated. Or maybe I can see if Metro is enough without having to ask for one of ya’lls help. Because I’d want nothing more than to share some more Hawk Hugs with people at tourneys/gatherings.

I used to live in Bowie… I used to work in DC. Shoot up 295, and you’re definitely in Baltimore in less than an hour, unless you’re going during rush hour… and given tournament start times, there’s never any reason you’d need to travel during rush hour.

As for everything else… honestly, you sound like every other guy that doesn’t go to tournaments. There are a million reasons everyone can come up with, to not come out. If you want to, you will. If you don’t, you won’t. There’s nothing wrong with that. I’m not gonna sit here, and tell you how to overcome every obstacle you personally have, to attending tournaments.

I mean, a bunch of us are driving to Ohio this weekend. That’s much further than the ride from DC to Baltimore. We want to do it, so it gets done.

As for personally telling you, whenever there’s an event… you’re on SRK. There’s a tournament forum… there’s a DMV thread in regional forums, where people post about gatherings all the time. Again, if you want to be involved, you can involve yourself. You can’t expect people to roll out the red carpet, just because you kinda wanna get involved, but can’t be so bothered to look up events, or try to find a way there…

And I promise you, people will give you rides. Even if it’s just to and from the metro… it’s enough to get you where you need to be.

same

Well let me start by saying look I’m sure you’re a chill person. I’m just sitting here attempting to have a good discussion one srk member to another about facts and some things that are up for debate. So I went to Google maps and from my location to Baltimore, MD is at least 50 minutes so yea you’re right that it’s under an hour. And for the sake of argument out of most if not all the tourneys I’ve been to don’t start on time. And you said there’s “never” any reason which i think is a bit of an overstatement because one such as myself might need to go at that time since I don’t drive and more than likely have to meet up with a friend who does drive to make it to the tourney location to make sure we get on the sign up sheet before they close the brackets. Every place that does tourneys is different. And if you want to group me in your personal category of people who don’t go to tournaments that’s fine. But you should realize that sometimes you just can’t like that. I do go to tournaments when I can. And I’m all about being determined enough to make something happen regardless of circumstances at times, but to me there are simply obstacles that can get in the way of one getting to a tournament regardless of how much determination you have. And as far as you assuming that I wanted you to tell me how to overcome every obstacle I’m just saying I never expected you to.

And hey I appreciate you telling me about the DMV thread in the regional forum. I actually think I knew about that, but your info was informative nonetheless. And I’m not expecting anyone to roll out a red carpet for me. I consider myself already involved, I just might not be as involved as some other people. And like I said I already told you that from my experience most people are not usually willing to give me a ride all the way home or even to a Metro station once I’ve gotten to a tournament. Getting to a tourney in specific parts of the DMV area isn’t usually the biggest hassle. It’s normally getting back that’s the problem. Sometimes not everyone is willing to bring you back when you need to get back because of time, distance, and/or money. So ultimately I’m not saying this is why I don’t go to tourneys at all. I’m just saying that from my experience these complications can come up which can greatly decrease my chances of going out.

Btw what’s happening in Ohio this weekend?

Went to The Break for an MvC3 tournament and got blown up because I was too nervous (first one).
