Yeah, I’ll do that for you. I’ll even do it for free since I botched the Wii support you needed for MWC. Customer service!
Do you need this done before Evo?
I should be there~
@Chounard -
Awesome boss! Yeah, I need it before Evo. Perhaps early next week? I have to paint and art up my stick first :china:
@JJJ -
Are you the only one going? I’m trying to find a ride out there on Saturday morning if possible.
hey jeff, check your PM~
I have to work Saturday so again, I can’t go to KC.
Hey, you’re that kick ass ken player!

at any rate good luck to you, and rex and whoever else from the midwest is going to evo. Screw the East/west bullshit, its time for the midwest to horn in.
Edit: Oh my god holy shit glen you were 100% right about what you thought marn was doing in his match against mago. Not that I doubted you for a second, but seeing the video itself is just freaking hilarious.

jesus
He didn’t like get worked, and Mago is probably the best in Japan. And Marn isn’t the best Boxer in the USA either.
I dunno, a lot of people have been exaggerating and saying Japan is years ahead of the US… I seriously doubt this now that I’ve seen that video.
thats not what im talking about. your not looking at what im looking at.

…i can’t stop watching the part where he just ups and books.
what did glenn say? because i watch that match and i’m like…wat
JJJ Ill play you in HNK sometime for that offer.
thank god somebody finally wants to play hnk with me and take my fray money…lol what character do you play, james?
jay, someday ill play with yah too…but right now its the road to evo baby
yeah id like to inquire about the video too, i forgot what he said and didnt notice anything.
oh yeah, sorry. had some urgent shit to do. You all better get ready, cause this shit is gonna be an essay. (I should be an english major, jesus):
The match was really close and good and all, but you all should ask yourself why Marn lost Both rounds. In the beginning you’ll see Marn doing real well, surprising mago enough to have him fuck up his fadc ultra a couple of times. But if you notice near the end of both rounds, (its alot more obvious in the second round). look at what marn starts to do. He just kinda stops as soon as he gets a life lead, and tries to sit on it, just like glen said he would. In the second round, a little bit after “the commentator is fucking crazy,” I was counting 5 seconds of Marn just sitting there on his charge, not doing anything, not standing, not throwing any jabs… nothing. So Mago sees this, realizes the WORST Marn will do is either, a dash punch, an EX punch, or a turn punch, and you can see him getting ready, and to bait those come out so he can stuff it. Marn, sitting on his life lead, thinks Mago is going to get worried about the ticking clock and try to close the distance, and try to himself get the life lead.
But if you notice mago doesn’t do that in either round. He instead hangs back, throwing out some jabs, does a neutral jump roundhouse, and does a focus cancel, throwing tigers, just doing a bunch of stuff to get marns reaction and build meter, and it works. marn was probably threatened by Mago building meter, reacts, and starts coming to him, and we see what happens after that. the point is, that you can see how both turtle completely differentely. when Marn turtles he is just sitting on his charge not doing anything, just sitting still. and he’s clearly doing this is to try and use the running clock to hopefully pressure mago into doing something stupid.
Except Mago can easily see what Marn is trying to do, because all he is doing is holding down back. Like I said, as far as attacking goes, The worst things Balrog can only do from this position: a crouching attack, a reg/exdash punch, a turn punch. and since he just blew his ultra load, thats all Rog would do, and Mago knew it, and made sure to be ready for it. “BUT HEY!”, you say rog could have just gotten up, or walked back, or focused or dash or whatever, but that’s the point. Marn wasn’t doing anything like that. he wasn’t changing his position at all, he was just sitting there like a lump on a log, And when He DID change position it was simply to go on the offensive, like when he was sitting still for a second or two, gets up and IMMEDIATELY tries to jump at Mago. The only time He moves is when he strikes at Mago.
Marn keeps doing his little sit stills because thinks he’s pressuring Mago into doing something stupid because, hey, he has the life lead and the clock running, Mago is surely gonna try and do something to get in, because zoning can only do so much right?
What he doesn’t realize by sitting there for seconds at a time doing absolutely nothing, He’s giving Mago time to think about what Marn’s options are, how he can exploit them. by the time he gets up do something Mago will have already have the time to see that possibility and stuff it.
Now when Mago turtles, he’s not sitting still for more than like, a second and a half, you’ll see him throwing out a short, getting up, walking forward, walking backward, empty focus canceling, just constantly changing positions, while marn is still sitting on his ass doing NOTHING, for 5 seconds, in his little down back crouch. What do you think goes through marn’s head when mago’s doing stuff like that? “Ok, he’s crounching now he’s throwing tiger shots, well I’ll just do-o wait he just got up and he’s walking toward, should I hit him now, he’ll just bl- ok NOW what the fuck is he doing, He’s jumping up nuetral roundhouse…what’s he gonna do next?!!”
It’s just like what Glenn said acted right out in that match. Marn was sitting there, wondering when to and how to attack, but obviously wasn’t sure how to go about doing that, because mago’s constant position-changing keeps changing Marn’s options. Mago is thinking of when to strike also, but he’s not sitting there, he’s staying in motion so Marn can’t get a steady read on him he’s thinking “what’s he gonna do next??” and thats exactly what mago wants him to think. I would agree with you guys that yeah, up until near the end, Marn was playing like he should have, he kept moving, kept changing everything up, kept confusing mago, by RUSING RUSHING RUSHING but AS SOON they get to most critical part of the match and he just needs to land one or more solid hits on mago, both times, he just decides to wait out the clock and sit on his fat ass and think he can get free pressure by doing nothing, just because of the clock and the fact that he has more life. No, that shit won’t work because Mago isn’t confused anymore, he can see him as clear as day now.
It sounds so obvious, but alot of american players do this shit, including me: Just staying in one postion, whether to sit on a life lead, or because I have some stupid plan of attack, and am pretty much BETTING that the opponent will act a certain way, and when he does something else, and I lose the bet, and my shit gets fucked up, or we think we’re being cautious, and decide to just wait, for other other guy to fuck up.
Just look at that travesty of a match I posted between starslay3r and Stacy. You can actually see them both at one point just sitting and ducking doing nothing. They think they’re reading each other, but really it’s just neither one knows what the fuck they’re doing, so they just stop and wonder what to do next they don’t think of scenarios, they just think: what’s gonna happen, now? and thats it. But that’s not really a great example, that match was miserable for a multitude of reasons (RANDOM ULTRA FTW HURFDURF). A better one would be Mike Watson Vs Kai. it’s like night and day.
Testu’s fuerte wins but not for the same reason. He’s always doing different shit. when He hangs back with his life, he’s changing positions, he’s bouncing off the wall, he’s flying to each side of the screen constantly, He’s RUNNING, almost never walking. Why? Because if he tries doing a set pattern like that jump back bullshit, nemo would’ve gotten wise and fucked his shit up, so he’s going to keep finding ways to keep nemo guessing while finding the best ways to hurt him, in order to frustrate him even more. And It works very well, as he winds up with a perfected second round.
In the end Raeli, no, I don’t think glorius nippon is light years ahead of us. They just seem to have a better mindset of playing the game then a lot of us do. They play street fighter like a boxing/karate/mma(take your pick already) match, in that they are thinking on the fly, they are constantly dukeing, juking, circling each other if you will, While we really play the game more like we’re trying to out game the game. “I’ll just play keep away and the game will make me win!” or like a chess match, “I’ll try do this move, see what he’s does, then this move, see what he does, then this…” Of course i’m not saying all our players do that, like Choi and Valle Pretty much play like the japanese do, because they just get it. Shit, Choi doesn’t even own the game and just started playing, and nearly peaces the fuck out of Wong at devastation, just because choi’s mindset just seems so much better.
The thing is the GOOD american players play like they should until it gets to the most important part, when both players are down to a sliver of health and then they just say, fuck it and start to turtle, trying to out life lead each other. I’m telling you, the moment Marn sat down, was when it all went to hell for him.
fuck, that was long. I’m going to bed. I got work tomorrow guddammit.
Is anyone hosting this weekend?
Yeah, you’re right. Marn wasn’t getting outplayed by any means until he got ahead and let himself get psyched out.
That’s why I try to stay moving as well, step kicks, low forwards, neutral jumps empty focuses just to keep people guessing. If I catch someone with them, I can actually do stuff, because they think I have a plan… which is really just to fuck up their plan.
This is the tl;dr of ramen’s post: Turtling only works in SF versus a good opponent if you can force your opponent to take a risk that you can then punish. The basic example of this is the fireball/shoryu trap. If you don’t throw hadoukens, they don’t jump, but if you throw a hadouken, you can’t shoryu.
One thing you should note Ramen is that defense in Street Fighter is a lot easier than offense. Offense is almost always better (even if that’s just projectile spam), but if you don’t respect your opponent’s offense, the best way to win is to turtle. For example, versus a Ken scrub online with Abel, I just hold down back and let them walk themselves in the corner. They’re not gonna know how to mix up frame traps and tick throws, and I can just anti-air them easily. They don’t know the matchup, and they don’t know how to press an advantage. It’s not worth trying to tick Tornado Throw because they’re just gonna mash shoryu anyway. I’ll just take my free win because they don’t know the matchup.
Basically, if you get a life lead, you get to dictate whether you’re on the offense or the defense. You have to decide which side you’re better at, and what they’re weak on.
