Sticks for Joy: Charity Sticks (Pre-order SFJ shirts!)

Even with sailor james in the mix?

Maybe you can get UltraDavid to chip in for the legal stuff?

It’s true, but it’s still better to avoid the dongles if possible. Twice last Evo I overheard someone getting DQed or forced to find a wired controller at the last minute because the judge thought all wireless devices were banned. In both cases they wouldn’t hear otherwise, even when I brought my phone over with the evo2k.com rules page; they had to go to Tom Cannon to get the OK. Makes me wonder how many people got screwed because nobody was nearby who knew better.

The only and main problem/concern i see with this is because this is the internet, people will most likely make up stories so they can get some easy money. That is not all of it either, the board(whoever they may be) will most likely be seen as elitist and problems may start to arise from how they pick people and who should have gotten picked and what not. I dont know but those are just the problems i see occurring. Now you may think differently but if you do i think it is because you most likely have tech talk regulars in mind rather than looking at srk as a whole.

No, I’m thinking about SRK as a whole. And each candidate would have to be properly vetted before getting anything.

Something else I realized is my uncle’s partner is a fund-raising consultant. He’s extremely good at it. I could call him and ask him for some tips on how to go about some things, but that would require me to actually be awake at a time when normal people are. -_-

Well even tho i still believe that there is just too much room for error and misjudgement. I will still donate as much as i can whenever panels and plexis are needed.

Yeah, for now, giving to individuals is a great idea, I’d love to give to people who have cases like Duckie. And actually, I’d not want to give to anybody in SRKTT, mostly because, well, it looks a bit scandalous. Another thing is, how many cases like Duckie’s are there?

Notable outstanding community member? Okay, plenty of those.
Down on their luck on life? Sure, that happens.
But the biggest factor? I think that it was that he was hurt while doing something for the community, and that he was in a really tight spot. THAT’S where the appeal to emotion comes in, and it’s honestly half of what we have to market on.

For now, though, I really want to get established as a reputable non-profit. Holding funds until we find some person that SRK deems worthy is kind of… just shady business. And I just mean that, what cause do we have? “Help support SRK’s XXXX?” No appeal to emotion. Hell, most people want to beat that person, it’s the nature of competition. “Help support [established charitable cause]” just has a marketable appeal to it.

I’m sure, if there was a good vetting process, and if we had extra money to do so, go for it. But, we need to spend that money keeping our name good first, donating our revenue to charitable causes. If we had a nice amount saved up that we didn’t need, and then

This, and I feel that it is honestly, relatively speaking, thankless. Would we have gotten any notoriety had we given the Evo money to Duckie? Probably not, he wouldn’t have gotten his article, and we’d be seen as a bunch of modders hiding behind a cause to pay our own. This, and it can cause issues of “Hey, I wanted that! Why him and not me?”

Now, this could totally go another way, where some hand-picked members are brought to our attention, and the people “in charge,” so to speak, let us know of someone like Duckie to give money to, sure, that would work.

I really like the idea of helping out community members. I want to do it, but what we need is, a good name. And the way to get that is to “buy” it with donations. We can donate to individuals, sure, but how long could it take to find another Duckie? And we need to make sure this goes to a good person who is going to use it responsibly? Even with all of Tech Talk behind me, remember, keits still wasn’t sure where the money went.

Another thing is, if we give money after they had this call for money article, so to speak

I guess the main problem is, as blklightning says, finding more Duckies. It just doesn’t happen, and hunting for one isn’t exactly something we can do.

I’m not saying no completely, and maybe when we have some money to give someone money at the drop of the hat, sure. I just don’t feel that we’re at a stage where we can do this comfortably yet. But that’s where I say yet, because I think when we’re a bit bigger with a bit more money, we can afford to do monthlies, and additionally, have a bit more to play around with where we donate. But for now, I’m just not seeing it.

You could always donate to the “Help D3v Get To EVO Fund.”

Heh. I’m not sure how well SRK will take this.

will this be an online raffle from now on?

For the time being, I’m going to wager that it’s just a bit unlikely. Last stick I shipped, even with all the packaging and care in the world still got beat to hell in shipping, and I’d hate for a winner to receive it.

That’s not to say the idea’s completely out of mind, I think it could raise a lot of money, and wouldn’t be limited to just tournament goers. It’s just, tough, to say the least, to get a legitimate way to collect the money online. Working on it, though, especially for the shirts.

Update to all: I got Child’s Play on board with us. I hope this isn’t too much trouble to everyone who wanted to help out individuals, but I have explained my primary reasoning in the last few posts.

We’ll also get a feature on the main Child’s Play website and calendar for our events, which I think will help our SRK and/or other website credibility.

Next question is, do we want to push for Final Round XV? Deadlines will be strict, but I’m sure that we can all do it.

Good job Lucas.

Great job. I couldn’t see any reason why they wouldn’t have wanted to take free money from us. I guess maybe they just needed to see that it was legit?

+1 on shirt. I don’t really like humans, all my volunteer work and donations go to animals. But I could justify a shirt.

Yes, I think it was because we had something and some sort of legitimate establishment.

That’s been the biggest problem I think I’ve encountered, the need to have a verification of sorts. If you want to partner with a charity, they want you to be officially on the list for a tournament or something. For that tournament to accept you, you need a charity. A real Catch 22.

I also think having the previous experience at Evo really made our case. Having a product and numbers and proof helped so much, as opposed to “we plan to do this and that, and the other, and hoping that we’ll get, etc.”

Anyways, thanks guys, you all deserve as much of a thanks as I do.

Yeah, Child’s Play is great. They do great work, and also keep open lines of communication with people working on projects for/with them. I worked with Jamie to cross-promote the stream when I was running Indie Games for Good (an indie gaming marathon back in November, raised almost $7k), and she was spectacular about getting Tweets about the event out and such.

The challenge becomes how to maximize the exposure of, and thus the potential return from, the sticks – with a limited direct audience (basically, SRK and perhaps the FGC web sites), it’s tricky to really get peoples’ attention for an auction or something. Cross-promoting with events (majors, etc.) is one approach, but it may be worth looking at other things to work with. Are there any notable charity fighting game marathons, for instance? A lot of marathons pair their events with auctions and raffles. Combine their audience (who’re already looking for things to bid on) with the audience of potential bidders from the FGC (put the word out/get pics of the stick out ahead of time) and you could really find a sweetspot of maximized bid war. Heck, make the stick themed to the event and it becomes something to remember the charity event by (something common with the “Craft-Alongs” that Desert Bus for Hopedoes every year).

Just some thoughts.

How about eating tasty animals?

I read shirts…I don’t want to miss out (hopefully I already haven’t)

where do we pre-order the shirts?
