Someone should educate me on the matter then, since I’m apparently ignorant and my standards for what makes a RTS a RTS is pretty high.
I’m not a defender of WC3. I find it to be the worst Blizz RTS to date yet, but it’s still an RTS. I’d like to address your points:
- You don’t focus your entire game on one hero. Not a single decent player lets themselves be limited to one hero throughout the entire game. While hero build orders throughout WC3 have been somewhat brain dead, it’s not a majority of your choices.
- You spend SOME time fighting neutral forces leveling up your hero, sure.
- Absolutely not true. If you want to keep your gold up and you want to actually deal with upkeep you need to build outward.
- Since everyone receives the same ‘punishment’ for upkeep, I don’t see how it really classifies as punishment. It’s just a step everyone has to go through and honestly I never felt that it was that bad of a mechanic.
- Some races require less building placement, but others (especially Orc) can benefit quite a bit from this.
- That just means you have to spend more time on micro.
- Completely wrong. If I don’t scout my opponent and I show up with Crypt Walkers and Ghouls and he shows up with Huntresses I’m straight up fucked.
- While it’s an RPG element, for sure, that doesn’t remove the whole game from the realm of RTS.
I think what spirit juice said pretty much sums up a good portion of WC3.
When a free custom map is the sole reason ppl even get WC3, you know theres a problem with the game.
It’s just obivous that you lack real experience with the game, because as bear said, your list of claims about WC3 are either wrong or excessively exaggerated. Your breakdown basically mirrors the opinion of day 1 Reign of Chaos impressions by players who wanted the next Starcraft or Warcraft 2, so you’re likely just repeating faulty info that you heard from someone/somewhere
All the things you require for an RTS are definitely important in WC3. You may not like the focus the game puts on those elements (more micro, less macro, etc.), but to think scouting, expanding and macro/economy aren’t a big part of the game just shows you never really played it.
WC3 is the 3s in Blizzard’s catalog. They made some big changes to mechanics and pace, and it polarized everyone. So it’s typically people’s absolute favorite or least favorite, depending on how they responded to these changes. I played both SC and WC3 quite a bit, and like both systems. Both games are super competitive at high level, and function great there. But I can say that the majority of WC3 bashers are talking out their ass because they never really learned the game, and thus fall back on generalizations. It’s about the same as the whole “3s is just guess parries and low forward xx super lolrofl” thing.
man this new patch is taking FOREVER to update. jesus. I hope its worth the wait.
The most recent patch is a fail patch. It just keeps restarting.
Patch just keeps looping on me… I can’t seem to get the game started.
Apparently it’s happing to a lot of people so it better get fixed soon.
excitement fail… =/
i just think its a big patch it had a shit load of torrents going on in the directory. who knows but blizz will get it up soon
The patch loops because it trys to connect to battle.net at the very end. The problem is, the servers are still down for the ladder reset.
yea i did the workaround to get to the login screen
If you open the folder and go to map editor and then run your map, you can be redirected to the beta login for b.net. You just cant login at this time.
Concussion shells now cost less to research and research faster. Wtf? It’s bad enough Terran is pretty much forced into MMM play because it’s so good. Wish they would make some changes, instead of doing this.
Immortals take longer to come out, which is kind of weird considering Protoss is already weak.
Queen speed nerf off of creep is kind of weird. I like the Infestor buffs though.
my beloved terran. how i love you so. I CANT WAIT to see the top korean players start doing tournaments for sc2. shit is gonna be DUMB .
Don’t expect to see any top KR SC1 players playing in SC2 tournaments. lol
That was Team Liquid’s April Fool’s joke.
Interesting “article” on Zerg and the lack of variety.
I was never a big fan of the SC series. That’s strange because I love most RTS games in general. My favorite one right now being CNCGeneralsZH with the SW mod and Dawn of War and all of it’s expansions. Oh, and let’s not forget supreme commander.
because when you can milk a 10 yr old game, why would you???
