Starcraft II!

It’s only the beta, and it’s not like SC1 was balanced and competitive from the beginning either; however, it’s currently unbalanced, and its competitiveness is a bit questionable. Good players are trying to break down the game and aren’t really finding much, but that’s expected in a beta. I think it’s going to take some time and many patches before SC2 becomes legit. Here’s a rundown:

Protoss: weakest race, forced to usually do timing pushes but struggles overall to overcome MMM and Zerg builds in general

Terran: MMM is standard against any build at the moment; there seems little incentive to go any other kind of standard build

Zerg: Strongest race, but not OP; usually forced into one build against Terran because of MMM, and against Protoss they can just switch tech appropriately to counter Protoss

These are just generalizations though. The game is still pretty awesome, despite its current flaws. I’m sure Blizzard will iron them out with time.

I also need to start playing more now that more of SRK is getting up in this. Haven’t played in a while.

Yeah I expected Warcraft III to be a giant leap forward like Warcraft II was. Pre War II RTS games are generally unplayable today. I even bought a whole new comp just to play War 3. Instead Blizzard just added in misplaced RPG elements. I mean that would have been fine in the campaign but not in fucking multiplayer. I never bought Frozen Throne.

Oh geez didn’t notice that gamestop deal. I’m going tomorrow. Finally a chance to play people.

Umm… Are you people joking? War3 was huge when it came out. 4 RACES! Creeps, heroes, items. Yeah it was War2 with RPG elements and it worked, the game was fucking awesome. Either way saying War3 was a letdown is the same as if you complained that for your birthday you expected a Lamborghini and got a Ferrari instead.

warcraft 3 was awesome until they changed the ladder system so that levels meant nothing. not to mention after i got bored with regular war3, DOTA sucked me in for another couple of years.

War 3 was a letdown to people wanting the next Starcraft, because as a strategic game, it pretty much paled in comparison, especially at release and before its expansion. 4 races, but the 4 races were extremely similar and uninteresting/non diverse compared to the 3 Starcraft races

I like both Starcraft and Warcraft 3, and played both very well. They can both be respected as entirely different games, which is the way it should be anyway, but its understandable that Starcraft purists would see it as a letdown

ahhhhhhhhhh why is unload not “U”, my dropships just rolled around like idiots

played my first few games. I had to get used to rally being Y and marines being a etc etc but all of it makes it stream lined and im loving it.

This game is really good, and im enjoying it big time.

Name on there is

I need folks to help me get up to speed. shouldnt take long as ive played SC1 competitively. Good players only no casual players. Beat my ass and get me ready for this ish SON!

The strategy to War3 paled in comparison to both War 2 and StarCraft. A plurality of your strategic decisions were based off of the build order of specific heroes that the opponent would take. At various patches several races would have obvious ‘first picks’ and if you played War 3 when it first came out then you remember how abusive the Huntress used to be as a unit. Compared to other Blizz strategy games it felt insanely dull and one-dimensional. I’m not trying to say that there isn’t high level play there, because there is. I even played the game quite a bit and beta tested The Frozen Throne. I never played the expansion after release for more than two weeks, and by that time my interest in the vanilla game had already dwindled. The amount of units allowed on the field, the amount of variety that the player could field, and several other features really limited my interest in it.

I was cool with upkeep though.

My name is: Irennicus.brendor

man ill add you. Fucking get the key and the night i get it the servers are down. Gonna take a quick hour nap. and wake back up so i can skeet on some hos. Playing this all day and night till super comes out.

BNet 2.0s been really flaky and weird for days now with stats and all that, but today is the worst, haven’t really been able to log on at all

Also, a reset is coming up real soon, which is supposed to include the reset of people’s IDs. So you may want to hold off on mass ID exchanges because you’ll have to enter everyone in again soon, haha

WC3 was hardly an RTS, unfortunately.

It’s funny to be on SC2 beta and see WC3 exclusive players play the game (or at least bad ones). You could totally tell if they only played WC3 and have no idea how to play SC based on their building placement and 1 base play.

Hmm, you can essentially get the collector’s edition for ~$76 from Gamestop. 25OFF coupon code for 25% off a $100.00 or more purchase. Add the collector’s and a cheap filler.

so far from the truth.

oh yeah my sn is ktffang.shield if anyone wants to play sometimes.

From the Gamestop collector’s edition website:

“This product is not eligible for %-off discount offers.”

:frowning:

Oh wow…

Let’s see… In WC3, you…:

  • Build one unit you focus your entire game on
  • Spend a lot of time fighting neutral units rather than the opponent
  • Can play most of the game on one base
  • Are punished for having too many units
  • Don’t really have to worry about building placement, sans some defensive static defense buildings
  • Barely have to have any macro because you don’t lose very many units in battle
  • Don’t have to scout for build orders/don’t really require intelligence on the enemy
  • You have one or two units that grow stronger over time and use items

In Starcraft, you…:

  • Have several build orders that very in effectiveness based on opponent’s build and timing
  • Want to have map control as much as possible
  • Need to expand when possible/safe to, as having a good economy is important
  • Want a large army and large amount of workers
  • Worry about building placement, especially at chokes or around your base to spot drops or harassment
  • Always be producing units so long as your economy permits
  • Intel on your opponent is very important
  • Don’t have one or two superior units that grow stronger over time, use items, or center your game around.

Basic RTS elements are micro, macro, scouting, expanding, and map control. WC3 has… micro and map control. WC3 is pretty much a RPG with RTS elements.

You must not have played the game very much, because your points are either drastic overstatements or outright wrong. Unless you’re just talking about low-level play where no one knows what they are doing.

Ha, I guess they caught on since quite a few people did this here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=477493
