StarCraft II Matchmaking Thread

I’d like to remind everyone that all I’m saying is that I think vikings are a better option than thors in response to a spire. If you back up your vikings with a standard MMM army and MT’s like any decent player should be doing then vikings are the better choice. Let me list my reasons for why I believe this:

-If you went MMM then you should already have starports with reactors so cutting medivac production for a bit to produce vikings doesn’t require any additional tech.

-T can reach vikings before Z can reach mutas.

-Thors have a hard time chasing mutas around while vikings don’t.

-Vikings do better against the other units available from a spire (corruptor, BL) than a thor.

-Once mutas are no longer a threat vikings can be set on patrol through expansions to scout while at the same time killing stray overlords, thors on the other hand are left to soaking up damage until they inevitably die.

-Vikings cost 150/75 while mutas cost 100/100, so the price is comparable depending on how you weigh minerals vs gas.

-No micro is needed because after they engage neither unit is capable of weaving in and out of attack range.

-Vikings will beat mutas in even numbers until they get too large (e.g. numbers that you really won’t see in a typical game), and with +1 armor on the vikings they will win every time. A viking takes 6 shots to kill a muta and with +1 weapons it only takes 5 shot. A muta takes 14 shots to kill a viking but with +1 armor it takes 16 shots, and it also renders the damage from the bounce insignificant doing 2/0 damage, that’s why I go with armor over weapons. I’ve even thought of preemptively getting an armory and researching ship armor +1 after scouting a lair and not getting vikings until I scout a spire. Even if my opponent doesn’t go mutas I would have needed the armory anyways to unlock further upgrades out of my ebay for my bio army, and my medivacs can still benefit from it. If he does go mutas then I’m well prepared. It’s better to get the upgrade for the unit you ‘might’ need then the unit you ‘might’ need (BW logic). I’ve tried adding in some focus fire but it didn’t really matter since the time wasted for the back units to move forward instead of actually attacking wasted too much DPS.

Just a reminder, I’m not saying vikings counter mutas, I’m saying that they’re a better alternative to thors.

from all the countless games ive play ZvT if i go mutas I end up making hydra/muta combo since Thors eat mutas pretty good and so do a lot of rines with med vacs

After watching so many games of Sen playing ZvT it’s hard to continue believing that thors counter mutas. If you understand the properties of the magic box and can keep your mutas spread out then you can completely negate the effect of splash damage from the thor. The real threat to mutas are stimmed rines and imo vikings when properly supported. I really never liked hydras in ZvT, they don’t really do well against bio or mech. Stimmed rine/marauder eat them up fast, and of course tanks wreck them (this may change in patch 1.1 though with tanks doing 35+15 armored).

“just shut up about balance or switch to terran”

Updated Tourney Info:

This finals pool will be the top 4 people, format will be the following:
2/3 games during this round
Everyone plays everyone else once
First map will be pre-determined; after that loser chooses the next map
Loser can switch race, winner must stick with the same race

During the first round of pools, everyone will be playing alongside everyone else at the same time
During the final pool, everyone is encouraged to spectate the final match

Ventrillo will be used to communicate with opponents, or if you don’t have access to a mic then in game chat is available. Still encourage you to listen in even if you can’t talk back. During the final pool play, the competitors will be in a different chat channel as the players (or players will leave vent entirely) as to not spoil the current game.

ROUND 1 MAP ROTATION:
Round 1 will consist of 3 games in your pool, I will post up the matchups for each pool (i,e, AvB / CvD, AvC/ BvD, AvD/BvC) and they will be played in that order. Map rotations will be:

Set 1) Blistering Sands
Set 2) Metalopolis
Set 3) Scrap Station

ROUND 2 MAP ROTATION:
Round 2 will be the winners from those pools in the same fashion, the first map will be determined by this list, while the next maps will be picked by the previous game loser. Maps may not be played twice in one set.

Set 1) Steppes of War
Set 2) Lost Temple
Set 3) Delta Quadrant

Still some more spots, if you have friends interested in playing be sure to let them know and sign them up here, it’s basically a fun trial run that may lead to bigger events in the future.

Also, the reason I’m asking for replays from both players is mostly just in case one of the players forgets or something. Realistically so long as the winner submits their replays we should be good.

REPLAY RULE:
In order to provide a replay pack, you must submit all your replays from games played in the tournament. Of course I can’t force you to do this, but it really helps everyone to have access to all the replays and learn.

All replays should be named in this manner to help me out: <MyName>vs<OpponentName>_<MapName>Game<X>of<y> it allows me to easily sort through replays without needing to watch them all. Best way is to save the replay right after the game and give it this name.

Send replays (zipped together if possible) to RushDownTV@gmail.com after the tournament is over

I agree with you that Vikings are useful against Muta. In conjunction with other units, like you said. Its their range that makes them useful here. Just a few vikings makes it harder for Mutas to run around getting free damage. Thor also has the range to do this, but lacks the mobility. And if they’re going straight for Muta, a few early vikings can usually come faster and accumulate quicker, meaning you can hunt overlords in that crucial gap which really hurts

P.S. I’m not gonna say anything bad about Thor though, or that Viking is a “better” Muta answer. Thor with repair assist is really scary

Supposedly people here don’t respond to interesting charts. This is exactly the kind of graph i’d expect to see on the game. I’m shocked hower to see how comparable playing zerg is when compared to playing random. If you want to win more games, pick up Terrans. What I’d like to see is a chart showing the amount of people playing at release compared to now. Are the numbers declining (which i’d expect) sharply, is there a low slope, or is it constant.

*Also, how accurate is this chart???

The chart is accurate, but a little hard to read at high levels; theres very little people over 1500, like 20 people, so any irregularity will skew the chart a lot. But it’s not too suprising

edit: Starcraft 2 Rankings

I dont see 12/20 top 20 as Terran so maybe its dated

I think people should stfu about zerg doesnt need any fix’s. I bet there are the same people who cried about shit in BW about toss and terrans

most of the time though thors arent by them self, they got rines or something else with them just saying. I dont like using mutas to much anyway in ZvT. Id rather rush, then try to nydus, and if that fails all make hydras with broodlords. I used to like toss in BW, now it seems everyone uses stalkers and voidrays and not much else

Thanks for the tips, guys.

I guess I should try to get better with sentries, but they cost so much gas. MM early push is insanely hard to defend against, and if they terran walls (which he will), even if you manage to scout a tech lab, you don’t know if he is going reapers or MM mix. Feels like any strategy I employ is a guess. Stalkers beat Reapers, but be raped by MM. Teching might save you from MM, but if they reaper, you are totally boned.

Wow, Phoenixes feel sooo damn good against Mutas. Favorite unit right now.

Got the courage up to drunkenly attempt some silly zerg cheese and ended up doing well. Shout out to DaDesi for putting up the stream.

Haha hilarious game… that was priceless…

I’m a real SC2 noob, I enjoy playing but I could use more people to play with, I’m a bronze leaguer but I feel my game is improving little by little.

I have a question for a friend of mine and figured someone here would know. In order for my friend and I to play he would need the NA version of the game (he is a Canadian living in Japan right now). I just wanted to clarify, to get the NA version he just needs to choose Canada as his country when he creates a bnet account and it should sell him the NA version when he downloads it, right?

yeap. im in japan right now and i play with NA peeps.

Ok so I play a game against this P player while I’m using T and everything goes normal. I end up winning the game and he says gg, but for some stupid reason I hit surrender. It’s like it’s hardwired into my brain to leave a game after seeing gg, so I won but still got a lose on my record, god I’m dumb. Here’s the replay for anyone interested:
