StarCraft II Matchmaking Thread

I had a dream last night that LT/Steppes/Quadrant/Basin were all replaced by awesome as shit maps. I didn’t really want to wake up.

I play on Korean SC2 sometimes. It’s not as cheesy as I thought it’d be, it’s usually hella solid micro backed up by decent macro.

We might only be a week and a half away from GSL going through with it! And as a subscriber now i can not fucking wait.

Here’s hoping that with the way Blizzard promotes GSL on their site and through in-game ads and everything, that they will take the GSL approach to maps seriously and do some overhauls (maybe it’ll time out with the ladder reset? would make a lot of sense to me to do both at the same time).

The big issue is all the big BW organizations (Like Kespa) have been using BW to make money for years, without Blizzard getting a piece of the pie. But Blizz let it slide. With SC2 coming out, they wanted in on the action since it was their game, so they started exerting their power over the Korean E-Sports community. This made people unhappy, and led to lawsuits and muscle flexing by both sides.

The end result? All the people who have power over BW have no rights to SC2, the only people who have the broadcast rights to SC2 is Gom. If other organizations want to air SC2 on TV, they have to license it through Gom. Since there is still hard feelings, nobody airing BW right now will bite the bullet and actually license SC2 through Gom and let blizzard win. Hence the reason you don’t see SC2 on tv.

Once the lawsuit settles I think we’ll see SC2 get more mainstream on TV and such in Korea.

(note this is just from my understanding on the situation, I obviously don’t live in Korea or have any insider info, but the Korean BW dispute is a big deal)

BW is also the more entertaining game to watch. SC2 games are either silly cheesy 8 minute all ins, or long boring games of macro where both players just sit back and get to 200 (it’s so ridiculously easy to macro it’s not even funny). Oh sure, there’s small little harass and micro here and there but it all doesn’t hold an ounce to the speed of BW.

This game at it’s current state is simply not entertaining to watch sorry. That’s why you see like 8 ppl in the audience for that GOM tv shit LOL.

the units in brood war are more dynamic and interesting that those in SC2, but I believe in the next iterations of SC2, we will see more dynamic, interesting, and useful units. as it stands, sc2 is a brilliantly fun game and i didnt think that i would enjoy it as much as i have.

BW players like to tell themselves that, but the reality is BW is severely dated and only appealing to people who already know the game. They all claim SC2 is way too easy to play but then for some reason aren’t able to be good players themselves winning tournaments. It’s pretty hilarious actually.

It’s like all the old ST players who refuse to play anything else. Sure, ST is an awesome game and worthy of competitive play for a long time, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything else worthy of playing.

BW looks horrible and boring (even if theres a lot of skill on display and going on); The skill in that game comes primarily from fighting against an ancient, terrible interface. Those exciting moments everyone claims makes BW awesome are only exciting to people who knows whats going on. SC2 has much more mass appeal and will overshadow BW massively in how big it grows.

I for one hope so Pimp. And, I am quite sure that Blizzard will be able to pull it off. I’ve played other rts games such as aoe and it’s always been a hassle to get people on and have a solid fluid gameplay experience. SC2 just continues to improve upon itself, and the latest patch is testament to their constant improvement. I can’t wait for the next sc2 releases.

D+ skill should get you into Diamond within a couple of days if not the first day.

I also agree that BW is waaaaay more entertaining to watch. Unfortunately it’s been hard to watch in the USA since youtube banned jon747.

youtube user moktira has been uploading almost all the games at blinding speed lately. although its separated into parts the speed and higher quality gives it the better option than nevake.

and yeah i also agree that BW is more entertaining. not sure why. maybe its the korean casters compared to tastosis. maybe its the maps.

I respectfully disagree. I think the people that claim that “SC2 is way too easy” are saying that in comparison to BW. I don’t think their personal success or skill means much. As to whether SC2 or BW is more interesting, it’s purely up to the opinion of the individual.

While the interface/graphics are outdated by today’s standards, they were pretty awesome for when it came out. Also, is it really a problem if a lot of the skill comes from a limited interface? I find it much more impressive watching someone is macro’ing out of 12 factories/4 bases while controlling 30 vultures/20 tanks in BW compared to anything in SC2. I never understood why the “it’s so pretty!!/them graphics!!” trumps the skill factor when it comes to games.

P.S. I actually enjoy some visual aspects of BW more than SC2. Marines and zerglings exploding into a giant pool of blood in BW; In SC2, they just turn into black ash and disappear? =\

Of course it’s coming down to a persons personal opinion, that’s kind of the point. But even when people link the supposed awesome BW moments or games, I just kind of stare at it and go meh. Probably because I wasn’t that into BW even though I played it (like everyone else in the late 90’s). I watch about 20 games of SC2 for every 1 I play, I just enjoy watching SC2 a lot and I know it has potential.

As for the marines death, that’s just silly. Units have a dead animation for EACH way they die, and they look awesome. Watch a marine die to a roach and melt into acid; watch them burn from a hellion and turn to ash. Watch them get shot by a tank and explode. Watch them get sliced in half by a Zealot.

In BW you can only convey so much with the 8x8 pixels a marine has.

Just watch this video and tell me SC2 doesn’t have style:

Sadly, the korean version takes all this violence out to keep it T : (

Lol, funny, I never even noticed all those different death animations during gameplay. I mean I knew the Roach/banelings and their acid but thats about all I noticed. That is pretty cool

It always feels so generic when I watch GSL, they really need to bring in the true deaths to the Korean version

so, I finally made it to 2v2 platinum after weeks of trying  I did this without a constant partner and was 2v2 random playing as zerg the whole way. My next goal: to become platinum in 1v1. Now, which is harder: getting plating in 2v2 random or 1v1?

Hard to say, since if you get a really long string of bad luck in 2v2 it can be impossible, haha. And the games strategies seem to be different too, but just apply the same stuff you’ve been doing in 1v1 and plat should be a cakewalk

Shit, I tuned in late (midnight) because I was out last night and caught the last Jinro vs MarineKing game. Jinro just got owned, MarineKing pimped it out on XelNaga by doing a double fast expand, to the gold and natural! Jinro got a hero fucking banshee that killed so many workers at the natural, but Marine King was saturating the gold and he never got away from that deficit. Plus Marine King got 3/3 before Jinro was even like 1/1 (on his tanks). He used his super mobile marine army to constantly counter attack and sandwich Jinro. Any lesser terran would have been owned but Jinro did his best. Marine King ended up taking the series 3-1, with Jinro (I believe) winning game 1.

So MvP also won 3-1 but I havent seen any of the games.

MvP vs MarineKing finals, TvT. With these top level T’s I actually appreciate TvT more now, unlike the last few seasons. I’m happy with the finals, though I’d like to have seen MC if it didn’t mean Jinro not having a shot

Supreme JD - sorry I was in an intense match when you messaged me.

The most economical build for zerg I believe is the 15 hatch 15 pool build. I would learn to open with this first as you can build up your econ quick, giving you more money to spend. Zerg’s true power is shown when your macro is humming. This build should lose to a 10 pool or earlier, cannon rush, or 2 rax all in on a small map… but if you’re trying to learn Z and I think this is the easiest way.

15 Hatch
15 Pool
17 Overlord

Pool finishes, make 2 queens, 6 lings, transfer 6 drones to expo, make 1 gas. Once you have 100 gas make speedlings. Where you go from here would depend on the matchup.

Also… I think I really have a good understanding of the ZvP matchup now. It’s almost starting to feel free… but maybe that’s because I blocked out delta and jungle basin on ladder.

Thanks for the Zerg insight as usual. I’m going to take up 1v1 again and appreciate the schooling. In your flow, when would you send out a drone for scouting?

For this build, you will be fine if you send out your 10th drone to scout… and then you can pool first if you see any of the cheese builds incoming.

Once you get comfortable with all the builds though, scouting would depend on the matchup + map.

in ZvT I’ll scout on 10 if we are on a small map or there is a chance we’ll be in close positions. I need to know if a 2 rax is incoming so I can react accordingly. Hatch first is impossible to hold in the really close positions vs a marine / scv all in. I also need to know how many zerglings / drones I should make when the pool finishes.

in ZvP it’s almost always on 14, but this is because I always pool first ZvP unless my OL scouts a gateway instead of a forge.

in ZvZ usually 13. A lot of zerg players don’t scout until there first pair of lings hatch… I don’t feel comfortable doing that with my build though. I use that drone to make sure I didn’t get 7 pooled and to see his gas timing.

Random, but I was watching some GSL, and it dawned on me…

JulyZerg reminds me of Marn. I think its just their mannerisms and the way they carry themselves or something
