I think that the ball is just there, and the entire driving mechanism is inside of the head on top; that top part rolls the ball underneath it to move. It seems the most straight forward way to do it
Maybe, I think that makes sense but (Iām watching the video again because figuring out how this thing works has taken my attention for the day) the ball moves independently of the head a couple of times around ~1:28. It could be the wheels on the head doing some magic underneath.
Actually that may be more evidence to only the head having a brain. Can you make a sphere turn on its axis from the inside? I bet thereās a way but I canāt think of it right now lol
BB-8 has got to be two independent motor units with at least one of them with some type of gyroscopic device. Magnets may be the way it achieves the free flowing while detached movement. Iād love to see how it was made.
Thatās what makes practical effects better than cg when done well. Nothing wrong with cg, but it doesnāt make you go āhow df did they do thatā the way practical effects do.
yeah looks perhaps stabilized in part by gyroscope/sensor/motor like those segways. The BB88 head is like the person in a seqway which shits the weight and the system can move to stabilize. That is my guess.
I was also amazed this isnt CGI
