The more i think about The Last Jedi, the more it pisses me off!!
What’s even more annoying is the fans that want so desperately to like this movie, who are all too willing defend such shitty writing.
The stuff with Rey for example. As bad as that was, that could have at LEAST bothered to dress up their LAZYASS writing in a prettier and more dramatic package. Something like this:
[details=Spoiler]They could have revealed Rey’s parents as members of the goddamn Rebellion. Who were caught leaking information to the rebels. When they got found out and knew they were going to be hunted down and killed, they ditched Rey on the planet, hoping the the First Order wouldn’t find her. Then they left and let their craft be destroyed. In otherwords, they SACRIFICED themselves for Rey.
And the kicker: That it was Snoke who discovered them and gave the order. Imagine seeing Rey pissed and trying to “force grab” her Lightsaber.
Snoke could be all like, “Ahhh you want this don’t you? Your Jedi weapon”.
And then play out the scene as before.
Now doesn’t that sound MUCH better than Rey’s parents just being a couple of bum ass junkers that gave no fucks, and abandoned their child?
LAZY. FUCKING. WRITERS.
Bonus scene: Snoke knew that Rey’s parents hid her on that planet, and sensed her Force Potential. Figuring that she might one day be a valued apprentice in the 1st order, Snoke allows her to live and uses the force to “wipe” her memory of the events.
That’s why she doesn’t remember anything and why she is such a good pilot. She probably learned a lot from her parents.
There. I just fixed one huge problem with this dumbass movie.[/details]
[details=Spoiler]Nah, Rey’s parents being fucking nobodies is the best part of her backstory.
She isn’t some destined chosen one, from a decorated bloodline, just a random girl gifted in the Force. Takes a lot of the veneer off that “she’s super duper special and totally awesome” aura she had going in TFA.[/details]
Just came back from watching a 2nd showing, with a more casual group of friends. The movie is better with lowered expectations, but it’s still a pretty flawed movie.
[details=Spoiler]The biggest outlook a 2nd viewing has given me was a better understanding of Snoke’s sudden death. Although his background is not told, it doesn’t matter because TLJ is not about good vs evil. Kylo Ren’s realization that the endless cycle of the Sith vs. Jedi is weak. Snoke is just another super evil dude who will die and be replaced, it doesn’t matter who he is.
If Anakin’s arc is about loss/fear and Vader’s arc is about redemption, then Kylo’s arc is about coping with nihilism.
That said, there is still tons of dumb in this movie:
What happened to Knights on Ren?
Why was Phasma so underused?
If Luke doesn’t want anything to do with the current conflicts (which is fine), then why was so much of TFA focused on finding Luke? Why would Luke encrypt his wear abouts?
Luke didn’t read those Jedi texts, but wanted to open a Jedi school? What kind of Christian Cult/Muslim extremist shit is that?
If Rey comes from humble parentage (which is fine as well), then why was so much of her characterization focused around her mysterious past? It didn’t have to fit whatever theory I’ve had, but coming from nothing is kinda wack. Daryl from the walking dead is OP and came from nothing, BUT his mysterious background is 5% of his story, not 60%.
[details=Spoiler]Yes and she can STILL be a nobody. But at LEAST now her past would be much more compelling for her character.
Plus realizing that Snoke ordered her parent’s death, would also give her LEGIT motivation for wanting to take down the 1st order. As well as get the audience rooting for her more too.
As opposed to the EPIC blandness that the movie deceided to go with instead. [/details]
[details=Spoiler]I know this is the modern age, where everyone is all cynical and shit, but back in my day, fictional heroes didn’t need any motivation beyond doing the right thing and helping people, because that’s what decent people do.
Rey is a decent person trying to do what’s right and use her gifts to help others in need. [/details]
[details=Spoiler]Yes but there is something to be said for GOOD storytelling, suspense, and Dramatic effect. All of which the reveal completely lacked.
“Yo Rey, remember those visions? Yeah that was the Force trolling you. Your parents were just a couple of crackheads that forgot you on the planet. The end”. [/details]
[details=Spoiler]a slow inevitable death being chased by a dozen Destroyers and an ultimate super Destroyer at sub light speed then that basic element of the movie better be tightly written together.
But instead we have the problem on why the first order didn’t finish them off when they waste zero time destroying everything they get within firing range of. Launch every fighter, the resistance was totally defeated. But again, conveniently let’s hold back because we can’t cover our fighters with our capital ships. Insanely stupid and just plot convenience
This IS NOT the same as the imperial fleet holding back on Endor. Palpatine’s arrogance and hopes to turn Luke to the dark side by making him see all his friends slowly destroyed is the reason the Imperial Fleet held back. It is clearly explained
Or don’t have a glaring plot whole the size of the USA on why purple haired chick kept the escape place a secret from everyone. [/details]
Which is more in line with an Abram’s issue than Johnson. I don’t think the new trilogy had a complete story setup done. I think they are essentially winging it based off of fan reaction and box office numbers. The saga is going to feel the effects behind this. To quote Palpatine, “You have paid the price for your lack of vision”.
Expect the First Order to experience death by Porg in IX.
[details=Spoiler]It also seems a bit questionable that she is able to handle elite “Royal Guards” or “Crimson Guard”. Those are supposed to be the best of the best right there. You’re telling me this frail girl with what…5 minutes of some half-ass self-training can hang with all of them? Even with Kylo’s help… ehhhhhh I’m just saying it’s highly questionable she would not get quickly destroyed by them…or at least seriously injured.
It also would’ve been interesting to see Rey actually go over to the dark side, even if it was just temporary…like perhaps by tapping into the “dark side” she’d get boosted powers and be able to actually fight with Snoke…and that would be how he ultimately gets killed in the scene? Maybe even have Rey get “stuck” that way, then we have a conflicted Kylo that has to fight her, but now he’s positioned as the one to save the day by either killing her or bringing her back to normal some other way. (and imagine how cool she would look with some glowing or yellowed eyes, pale skin with veins becoming more visible, maybe even some of her hair falls out, etc.)Sheeeeeeit, I would’ve absolutely loved that… a “heel turn” is always an awesome thing if done right, imo.[/details]
And let’s not fucking forget that the whole “we can’t cover them” excuse makes no goddam sense because Kylo destroyed all the rebel fighter ships. What the fuck do they need cover froooooooooooom???
Yup, I said that in my first post. he destroyed the hangar, his swuad destroyed the bridge of the Resistance Capital Ship. This is it…they’re fucking dead now. It’s GAME OVER. We have shown time and again how capital ships are practically useless against any fighters…Nah let’s retreat. with all the destroyers they had, they probably have THOUSANDS of ships at their disposal. It’s a total joke
The First Order fighters were only able to penetrate the Resistance shields because they were under fire from from the First Order fleet. Once they were out of range of the destroyers, the didn’t have the fire power to penetrate the Rebels shields. I thought that was pretty obvious.
The fighters destroyed the bridge and the hangar of all the fighters. Shields were up
What surface defenses did the Resistance have? Why couldn’t the First Order just obliterate any ship turrets they had with their fighters? Poe and 1 bomber destroyed a Super Star Destroyer
Capital Ships have had their shields worn down by overwhelming attack fighter forces. See Rogue One, see Endor
They could just…take out the engines with a swarm of fighters. The First Order, being technologically superior to the Resistance, should have…I don’t know…Bombers of their own for this kind of job
So…as it turns out the reason this movie feels so disconnected from the previous one is because Rian Johnson had already written the script before he saw TFA…not sure what to feel about that.
To the guys who hated TLJ, can you imagine anything that could be in episode IX that would convince you to watch it? Basically, are you done with Star Wars?
Except that we know that somehow the Empire can follow them which means maybe there’s a spy on board, and if the plan gets leaked every goddamned person dies.
I think you can call it a plot whole, but you can also just roll with it. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some mention of this in the deleted scenes.
