Episode VIII is out here today. Went and saw it.
Hyper is real, my personal tier list of Star Wars movies got shaken up in a big way.
I have a little under 36 hrs to go and Google is messing with me via feed.
Got to see it today.
Honestly, I’m giving a solid C. Lot of good shit and a lot of terrible shit. (A few bad storytelling decisions and something else that opens up tremendous plot holes in the previous movies)
Not sure if I’ll see Episode IX in theaters. This one is really going to divide the fanbase.

Guys, for the first few weeks (lets say 2-3) please keep all discussion of the movie under spoiler tags. That way the people that saw it early can jump in the conversation and those waiting to see it don’t get things spoiled.
The rest of you, don’t fucking click on spoiler tags and then complain the movie got spoiled for you. that’s not how that shit works.
Well these next few weeks are gonna be fun for this thread. I’ll make sure pop extra popcorn for everyone.
Might have to watch it again to solidify my thoughts on it. But so far, I’m in agreement with a lot of reviews stating that it might be…

What I can say though, is that it subverts or turns on it head every expectation you have about the plot, or what you think will happen.

Caught an advance screening of Episode VIII last night and I can say that it is superb overall. Lots of moments where I got the feels and some were kinda wtf for me. Not too happy with how some scenes played out but the plot was well-paced and great humor sprinkled all around.

Rey’s parentage reveal was pretty dull but liked how they handled the appearance of Yoda.
It’s so good, it looks like the Episode IV puppet rather than a CGI character.
Def see it in 3D if you can, very well done. Going to see it again over the weekend, it’s just that good.

[details=Spoiler]In a way though, the reveal of her parentage makes Episode VII’s title make more sense, in that the Force is “awakening” because it wants to balance out Kylo’s growing power.
On a related note, it seems that this whole new element of the Force balancing itself out and manifesting in certain people (regardless of their parentage) is something they’re leaning into more. Aside from Rey, you can say that Ezra from Rebels fits into the same mold.[/details]
Just saw the movie a few hours ago.

Pros:
Poe is one of the best characters in the movie. No surprises there.
Space battles were great as usual. Also no surprises there.
When the resistance ship light speeded into The Supremacy, there was this one guy down the front who yelled ‘HOLY SHIT!’. It was funny, but kinda ruined the tone of the scene in general. The silence after it plows straight through the ship was spectacular.
Yoda was one of the best parts of the movie. I loved that he looked like a puppet and wasn’t entirely CG… it was a nice touch.
Kylo’s ability to use the force evolving beyond Snoke’s own was really cool to see. Kylo and Rey’s fight was amazing too. The red throne room and the guards also looked superb.
For the little amount of time we had with Benicio’s character, I really enjoyed him. Getting Phasma out of the way was nice too.
I like the ending when the kid used the force on the broom, it was a nice touch that thematically matched with the whole theme of the movie of the force being able to manifest within anyone and not just people within specific bloodlines.
I like Luke’s death. He’s basically come one with the force so he can train force sensitive users around the galaxy.
Rey having all the ancient texts near the end was a nice touch.
Cons:
Luke throwing away the saber was a poorly executed and forced attempt at humour and really ruined the ending TFA had set up.
Casino scene felt super out of place.
Underdeveloped characters. Snoke was basically a jobber like I half-expected. Kinda wish his death wasn’t as telegraphed as it was, but I was surprised that there were no explanations about his origins, goals, and how he and the First Order formed.
Something about Leia floating back to the ship looked really off, and I didn’t like the scene in general. Like, talk about a cool way to write her out of the story, and then she suddenly uses the force to come back.
There were a lot more jokes than I’d like, most of them felt forced too.
The whole animal cruelty thing was… meh.
I’m not sure what to think of Rose. Her romance w/ Finn felt rushed.
Deus ex machinas in the form of the rebels suddenly finding a base to buy them time from being totally obliterated.
Loose plot threads, i.e No Knights of Ren. They were mentioned in the previous movie, but are nowhere to be seen.
Nitpicks:
No Lando cameo when the trio (Rose, Finn and Benicio) were finding out who’s ship Benicio stole was disappointing Also not finding out what happened to Benicio after the Supremacy blew up.
The appearance of the Porgs was cute at first but obviously thrown into the foreground by Disney’s upper management. They only serve to be an excuse to make more merchandise, as if Disney didn’t make enough money already.
And yes, we get it, that one lady has a really big nose. Stop doing so many side shots of her >_>
I[details=Spoiler] have the same thing in mind but who knows where they want to take the mythos moving forward with the series. That kid in the final scene is like one of the biggest set-ups of the saga by far.
Even Rogue One went to lengths with explaining the presence of force sensitive individuals that are not necessarily Jedi or Sith. The books and tv series do a lot of the carrying the foundations of such people within the universe.[/details]
