ST on GGPO runs like shite in windows 7?

Hey guys, I’ve got a new PC now running windows 7, and ST on GGPO runs like garbage; basically it frameskips a lot, and also seems to drop inputs. It’s a pretty good PC, able to run for example starcraft 2 on high settings, etc. Note it runs badly even offline. It makes ggpo unplayable for me now.

I’ve played with all kinds of settings (running windows in classic mode, full screen on, this blitter , that blitter, various resolutions for both the game and the monitor)… nothing has worked.

Has anyone dealt with and solved this issue? I guess in principle I could create a new HD partition and install windows XP with ggpo, but that just seems kind of retarded, especially considering I’m using a SSD and so space is limited.

I get frameskips with the FBA emulator (i.e. it looks choppy sometimes, then smooths out, then goes back to being choppy, etc). Not sure if that’s a universal thing or just specific to me. No amount of fiddling with settings fixes this. I blame the graphics drawing, it’s just not smooth at all like the arcade CRT. Not to mention other annoyances like input lag with USB sticks, monitor lag and so on. It’s far from ideal, but really, it’s the best we’ve got.

//EDIT: This is on Windows XP (SP2).

apparently people don’t read now

try this

Method 1
Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Adjust Visual Effects > Adjust for best performance

Method 2
Right click on your desktop and select Personalize
Change your theme to the Windows Classic version under Basic High Contrast Themes.

I’ve been trying ggpo again on Vista even though i have had alot of problems with it before, but i also tried the 2nd method mentioned above, and it seems slightly better then what it was but still not as good as if i had XP im sure.

many people use dual boot and keep a minimal install of windows with no junkware or antivirus just for gaming (and they play one game at a time, restoring to a clean xp after they finish a game).

a minimal xp install takes very little space and boot up in a minute. if your computer can boot from usb drive, get a 2GB flash drive and install xp on it (then adobe air + ggpo, no other craps)

Well Ive also have had this problem with windows 7 too many lag spikes and frameskips. And this is a brand new toshiba laptop. People are complaining about my connection being to laggy as well. But lets not forget the fact that the ST rom is messed up as well and glitchy, plus the speed is jacked up as well speed of 1 on fba ggpo is more like speed of 4 in the arcade.

Are you sure this is related to FBA? The speed differences seem to match the ones from the arcade (e.g. Sim, Gief and Chun stages being fast). Also, for some reasons emulator programmers will know how to explain, the more accurate an emulator is, the more processing speed it needs.* But this can backfire and cause issues the original game does not have. Maybe a recent version will demand a lot from the system cos its more accurate than a version from 7 years ago which would run fine on a crappy machine.

A question: have you tried disabling every automatic update option from every program that has it?** MS safety recommendations and defaults tell and have people to have it activated, but it sucks for gaming, specially online.

Frames dropping happen to me in XP too. It is particularly annoying against Ken and his projectile.

Edit: papasi’s suggestion may help a lot. I feel like trying it: having an expendable system that does not need firewall and anti-virus may save a lot of system resources.

*you may try the ZSNES board.
**Windows, firewall if you have, anti-virus, flash player, system time, etc.

FBA version has known frame skipping and input delay in windows 7.

Yes, there’s a noted problem with FBA/W7 that has problems with rendering that causes frameskips (big thread in the FBA forums). The creator of FBA said he found out the issue, and pretty much working on fixing it. However, GGPO needs to be on top of updating the client first and foremost. One of the main problems with the current GGPO FBA is ZERO, and I mean zero options for Vsync, which is awful. My MAME runs flawlessly but GGPO feels awful from time to time, and you can barely see the first few frames of a fireball.

Overall it’s Windows 7’s fault, but it’s also the outdated fba client that exists in GGPO at the moment. So it’s not your computer.

I have a similar problem, suddenly my replays desync and I feel noticeable (and sudden) speed changes while I’m playing. I didn’t have this problem when I was on XP SP2, maybe SP3 is fucking things up.

Nice thread. Thanks for the resources.

Anyone here play ST GGPO when it first came out? It was relatively glitch free. It wasn’t until some of the last revisions that it got super glitchy. It got even worse when Vista came out since GGPO was no longer in active development at the time (and thus isn’t completely Vista/7 compatible). Sad really.

Runs fine for me.

oh man, suddenly ken becomes ridiculous because he has inviso-fireball, geez. It’s sad that when the FBA fix comes, GGPO will never get it since development seems to be all but dead (no updates in over 2 years).

Yeah that’s funny. They abandoned this project and people still come on every day to get their fix of SF. I also play ST on Windows7 and it runs fine for me, it runs smooth and everything but frame skipping…ehh I guess it happens since this isn’t arcade perfect anyways plus the fact online doesn’t make it any better but hey it’s still fun to play. Even though boxer and claw are crazy tier online…
