SSF4 Guile Match-up Thread: Typhoon < Sonic Boom < Vortex

@Slinkun I have to thank you for that info with the cr.lp x2 against Dudley. Something so simple yet so effective. I was shocked at how well it controlled the flow of the match.

Sweet! Glad to know it works and it wasn’t just me.

Man I am super excited for ultra. I swear it was getting to the point where almost every character could just unblockable Guile to death.

Holy… Dagger G is alive! Haven’t heard anything from you in awhile, how’s been things?

Any advice against Goukens? Is it really a 6-4 in favor of Guile?

Absolutely not. If you got that from the actual page 1 of this thread, it needs updating… I’ll probably get around to that along with making one of these new fandangled tier charts.

I think we were all convinced it was a 6-4, nothing special, kind of matchup, but then Infiltration came along and 7-0’d Dieminion. A few months later, we see KnuckleDu body Infiltration’s Gouken. It’s kind of a hard match to analyze just due to the extreme lack of any Gouken’s whatsoever.

I will say that Gouken wins the zoning game and that he can’t really rush Guile down. If he goes for any Demon Flips, air throw will blow up every option that he has. If he gets in then just do late stand techs when he’s close since he has no low hit confirms. His pressure is really kind of butt. I’d argue even worse than Guile’s. If you get in on him… somehow… you can apply some pretty good pressure that he just has to deal with unless he feels like making some big risks. He doesn’t have a real good crouch tech, so going for throws mixed with delayed close b.hk can be pretty effective.

However, in the zoning department he really destroys Guile. There is just nothing Guile can do in terms of zoning outside of the very rare EX boom to score a measly 50 damage. Guile has to make risky jumps while most likely taking a lot of damage or risk getting pushed into the corner while focusing fireballs to build U2, which as actually a useful tool here. Sniping fireballs with U2 is about the only really good tool that Guile has to do deal with Gouken’s zoning.

I made a matchup chart. What do you guys think?

Looks good to me.

Looks good, I would swap Blanka with Yun then put Yang right beside Guy but that’s just me.

Gouken/Guile match up in my opinion is where rushdown (tick throw mixups and Upside Down Kick) come in really handy. Oh, and getting that hard knockdown on Gouken becomes crucial as well.

Interesting. I would put Cammy in 3-7.
Elf in 4-6.
Dudley in 5-5.
Rufus in 4-6.
Rose in 5-5
Fei in 4-6.

I go back and forth with how I feel about the Fei match. Overall I think it’s 5-5. Guile players I think need to use standing forward in that match way more. It beats Fei’s jump ins where it’s too far out for crouch fierce and most importantly, standing forward its beat all (ex included) Chicken Wings cleanly 100% from pretty much any spacing. I see Guile players trying to beat Chicken Wing with crouch fierce which works if the spacing and timing is correct, but stand forward beats it every time no questions asked even with lazy timing.

I think Rose beats Guile though. Rufus is 5-5 I think. Need more match experience for that one.

Guile vs Seth is 1-9? How so?

Given that as long as Guile is A) Not in a corner and B) Not on lying on his back, he can/is in control (of) the match. At that point, I consider that an even MU. As such, I personally use the following criterion for measuring Guile’s MU’s.

  1. Get in (evade his AA/Spacing game with pass through/Dive kick/stupid shit)

  2. Stay in (exploit his turnaround glitch and just turn him into a practice dummy)

  3. Batter him when they are in (exploiting his low stun and health with hard hitting combos - it kind of goes hand in hand with the above, but I think we can all agree there is a difference between taking a battering from Abel than say Deejay)

Favorable are those can typically do only one (e.g Honda, Dudley - both can do a fair bit of damage, but it’s a struggle for them to get in and stay in typically. Similarly, Deej can get in but then what?!)

Even MUs are those that can do any two (Oni, Ryu - chunky damage, can get in but again don’t usually stay in once they’re combo is finished/can be threatened with reversal FK>FADC).

Losing MUs are those that do all three (Seth, Viper, Abel - You’ve played the MU, you know the deal; they’re difficult to keep out in the first place and when they inevitably do , they stay in until you’re brown bread)

Seth isn’t 9-1, but I think he’s definitely Guile’s worst matchup. You can’t really do much at max range, and at the range Guile would normally win at, divekick just ruins everything. Beats c.hp and flashkick clean, and often manages to magically avoid air throws and air normals too. Once he’s in, he can start with a very ambiguous j.hk / divekick making you lose charge, and then he has 5 different ways to mix you up from there.

Frankly, I just play Vega in this MU. At least then I can pester, poke, and I have access to that good backdash and KKK flip.

How do you best poison she is like a guile with invisible specials that go across screen better longer
Normals and godlike focus attack

For poison, stay at backfist range or sometimes just a bit further. The aim is to engage in the FB war, bait her j.rh or axe kick and AA it with standing fierce as this is your most reliable AA in this MU. Due to her jump arc and hit box (especially on her axe kick which is kind of a semi grab), a lot of your other AAs get stuffed or are simply too risky (work in certain areas, get stuffed in others). Air throw and J.rh works wonders on reads though.

If you’re crouching, Cr. Fierce tags her if she’s balled up, but anything other than FK will lose if her j.hk/axe kick are in their active frames.

The good news is much like Guile, she loses to sustained pressure especially in the corner (her DP is ass but since you’re Glass Jaw Guile, you still have to watch out for it) So when you get a chance, press the advantage and lock her down in a corner

lol i played against someone recently who used ibuki, cammy, viper and seth against me and tried to argue that seth and ibuki are in guile’s favour. even with the nerfs i still think seth wins the match.

How do I beat Codys who throw a rock for every book? He can keep up with my zoning and I have not found a way to force him to come to me and get AA’d to death.
