SSF4 Guile General Discussion Thread

All shotos besides Ken, but I think in the next game I might just convert back to U2 for everyone since the 50 damage boost off of FADC

for me it depends not only on the character, but the actual opponent too. for example, if i’m playing a rush down orientated player who likes to press buttons, i might pick ultra 1 sometimes just to give them a warning not to fuck with me on wakeup. also, i like ultra 1 against sagat, because sometimes when you have the life lead, sagat’s like to start jumping in, and some of sagat’s jumping attacks can be a pain to anti air sometimes. same reason i pick ultra 1 against dudley.

this is what ultra i’ll pick in the average match, but i might switch if i feel the need to:

ultra 1: sagat, dudley, viper, yang, yun, seth, gouken, guy, adon, ibuki

ultra 2: ryu, ken, akuma, cody, dhalsim, deejay, blanka, chun li, zangief, t hawk, sakura, dan, fei long, balrog, vega, bison, hakan, juri, honda, gen, cammy, oni, evil ryu, guile, makoto, rufus, abel, rose

sweet, anyone else have other opinions? you dont have to list them all, but that would be best! Just the obvious ones, I’d like to get lots of opinions, even if its just the most obvious, like who can everyone agree on using u1 against, looks like u2 is vs the majority of the cast.

I agree with most of this.

I don’t like to use Ultra 2 against Honda if they chose Ultra 1 because they can go right through your Ultra 2 with their Ultra 1. Bison has a lot of ways to punish a missed Ultra 2 so I’ll generally go Ultra 1 for Bison. (I guess if you are careful to use it just when Bison is standing it’s pretty safe.) I’d probably also take Ultra 1 for Juri and Cammy.

Can Hakan slide under Ultra 2? I know he can’t slide under EX Booms. He’s generally such an easy match-up I don’t think about the Ultra much.

Disclaimer: I’m scrubby. I also kinda switch around quite a bit because U2 is such crap even when it hits. My must-picks that immediately come to mind are probably:

U1 - Guile, Ken, Fei Long
U2 - Ryu, Evil Ryu, Akuma, Sagat, Dhalsim, Zangief, T.Hawk

The rest I usually pick whatever I feel like lol. Yun and Yang usually U1 too but depends on the player. I’m kind of a fan of having full super against people that constantly cross you up all day in the corner, anti-crossup super > U1 can be useful. It’s damn near impossible for sonic hurricane to land against Guile so I always pick U1 to exploit openings as much as possible.

Pretty sure Hakan can’t slide it but he can HK Super through it, which I know because I’ve done it and it’s awesome.

Sweet! I didnt know you could land u1 after a cross-up defended super, I do super to u1 when I can, but didnt know u1 would land if they were over you/in air, does it work if you hit them in the air once or twice or both?

You can’t…

ah well, I was hoping…thanks gilley

Well yeah, he can do it in that one situation where guile is cornered and the super has to hit 2x against a poorly placed crossup. If it hits once you wont be able to land the U1. Also if the super hits multiple times, you wont be able to juggle with U1. Good luck using it on 99% of the crossup situations though.

See the vid posted by Nem. Like Gilley says, it only works if the super hits 2 hits. Sure it’s very situational and if the cross up is earlier or they have a short jump arc there is a chance that it will only knick them once and you’ll be punished for it. You have to be good at recognizing that they jumped over you late enough for the super to still be able to hit. If I smell the jump coming I’ll just buffer the down-forward/down-back part of the motion before I wake up and if they jumped I’ll hit it. It’s actually not that hard to recognize, but you do have to stop yourself from hitting it if you’re uncertain or if it’s not worth losing all your meter.

Yes it uses your whole super meter, yes it’s not particularly strong because you used your whole super for 2 hits, but I’ve gotten pretty good mileage out of that trick. Use sparingly, but don’t forget about it in my opinion. Everyone knows Guile is pretty free to cross-ups… this is the one situation where you can turn that expectation around.

well good stuff, that is new tech to me. I will watch for it when cornered, it can be nice to have an extra trick up ur sleeve in that position - just like it was in the vid.

Well, if you do hit with that super as a crossup. Just remember to switch your charge to the other direction. Otherwise, the U1 will never come out.

Personally, I stick with u2 all the time regardless of the opponent. It fits my play style of low execution but reliable moves.

a trick, block a divekick from yun. like they ALL keep hitting after you block a dive kick and i do ultra 1, it won me a tournament match locally

ultra tricks are good too! if anyone has others like Andy said, I like u1 as a kind of get out of touble ultra and that is a good trick if you can get it out in time.

but honestly for the most part you should stick with U2. I have above average reactions and I’ve punished fireballs that made everyone who saw go “OHHHHHHH” just cuz it was nearly point blank, and I shook my whole body like a dumbass lol

I land this many times. If they cross you up in corner and youre charged for super, it works. After doing it enough times, you will learn to recognize when it will hit twice. In the meantime you are already charging in the opposite direction to land it. The same goes for Ultra 2. Sometimes though, they don’t land behind me (more likely at midscreen) and i end up charging the wrong way and don’t use it at all. You simply reset and start zoning again, thats all. It looks impressive and people freak out cause you change direction but it’s very easy to execute.

In regards to UltraDavid’s commentary at SB, he mentioned the jumpback jab that quite a few players were abusing to deal with divekick pressure from twins/Rufus. We witnessed Momochi’s Cody use the same tactic against Ricky’s Rufus. Looks like I’ll be adding that into my gameplay against divekick pressure.
