SSF4 Gen Match-ups & Strategies (Old)

Damn I had to spread out the Characters because I was at the character limit. So over time they might be more spread out. Thank god I have a few posts on the main page. I won’t want to make people have to search multiple pages.

Found this Tutorial on how to deal with Rufus. It’s geared toward Guile but some things might help out.

I’ll put it in the Rufus Section as well.

Can someone tell me why Rufus is such a hard matchup?

I seem to find Rufus one of the easier match ups I have do deal with, though it ultimately comes down to your own playstyle and reaction techniques more often than not it’s just about reading the Rufus divekick as much as you would read a cross up or tech throw, people (Rufus) players included have patterns in place to punish.

I find that I can either Mantis Sweep, back dash on the crossup or beat it out with Lk Gekiro it’s invisible hitbox at the bottom is brilliant for catch it late and has the right angle to beat it out if its dead-on, in vanilla I just tended to use Gekiro and after you’ve proven you can punish the divekick spam/mixups they back off. Then just poke or turtle until he tries dive kick spam again and reset.

Same thing goes for Viper burning kick spam, but considering that’s not likely to happen anymore I wouldn’t put too much thought into it.

I personally struggle on getting in on Sim and keeping enough pressure on a Blanka that is either very hop friendly or can piano Jab~Lp electricity any suggestions how to deal with these?

Rufus is a hard matchup beause he’s a tank that has no reason to be afraid of you. You basically can’t jumpin in this matchup due to his ex snake strike (which takes away 1/3…) and j.hk>ultra.
Not to mention his divekick pressure is hard to deal with for Gen. He can keep doing his 1-frame combo all day long on you if hé’s in unless you do EX Gekiro. I suggest you play a advanced rufus and see for yourself why it is a hard matchup.

Dhalsim can be handful for Gen aswell. If he does jump back fierce alot I would suggest doing an Oga ceiling drop :df: or :db: depending on side. If he jumps back he eats it, if not you’ll probably land safely due to the surprise factor. If he does yoga fire alot try to sneak ia little closer in crane style and jump in just as he does a yoga fire for j.hk>c.mp>hp roll i.e.
Once you’re in (or have him in the corner) he can’t do much about it if you keep your cool. If he teleports you can just press any normal button and it beats him before he recovers from it. Or he will probably slide>throw you to escape or set up a ultra trap iirc.

Besides the fact Blanka is a horrible character, he is also pretty hard if he knows the matchup (meaning:he doesn’t use balls to give you free super/ultra). I would play this match rather slow actually, not doing Oga (easily beaten by vertical ball etc.) Slowly walking forward. If he decides to get cheeky with his hop into throw/electricity shennanigans, you should know that electricity can actually be beaten out of with throw on startup, EX Gekiro also works if you feel like using the meter for it.

I find Oga is a good way to get in on Sim. Just use Feints in no pattern then make your move. Using Angled Ceiling Dives help. I find using FADC through his limbs is a bad idea. It was in vanilla and even more so now. Time your Gekiro to punish Yoga Snipers. If they use the teleport game to cross you up. Crane c.HK or Jabs work fine. Even a well timed Gekiro works. Crane Super as well. Blanka depending on the type you fight, if you fight ball happy blankas Oga works well (LK Feints). A lot of people say it doesn’t but I’ve had great success with it. Rush down blanka’s. I do believe LK Gekiro beats one of the Electricity, but don’t quote me. I have beat them in the past with the hop cross up electricity. I find Blanka has really good Air to Air. Using Gekiro helps keep him down. Blanka over all is one of the hardest match-ups for Gen. I find the worst kind are the rush down ones. The ball happy ones that just lame it out are easy to deal with I’d say 80% of the time.

It kind of sucks that Gen has no way to punish a Blanka ball unless he has super or ultra. Most of the cast can actuallly punish it :frowning:

Wasn’t Gen able to punish horizontal balls with Gekiro? You can always poke your way out of it. but you need really good timing and in most cases blanka balls are just to cover distance so they can get in your face.

I’m pretty sure the blockstun on Verticle balls doesn’t allow gekiro, EX gekiro does work for elec and I’ll burn it if it means getting distance on him. I have got some very scary Blanka players I have been practicing against and can’t really manage to beat out the hop mixups no matter what I’ll usually pull a few rounds here or there and beat elec ball croos-up shenanigans on wakeup with crane U1 on wakeup which autocorrects and punishes really well but asides from a few little things, the blanka players usually know not to horizontal ball me and can spam hop vertical roll till the cows come home ><

Whats faster in terms of Oga ceiling drop, other side of screen then ceiling command or same side ceiling, i’ve been wondering about this for a while. Anyone know something about this?

i think it depends where u stand with your opponent. close to a edge it’s faster to oga the front wall. anywhere in the middle (where the screen is centered on both characters) back wall should be quicker. but dunno exactly. u could record some footage and measure it, tho.

Too be honest Blanka eally only has shennanigans, and the more you play them the more you become accustomed to switching sides to defend due to hops etc.

Horrible matchup though.

/fixed : D

=D haha

punish horizontal balls with forward dash mkxxhands. It’s really tight though.

While we’re on Blanka, you cannot punish his U1 with Gekiro at all anymore. Not even Ex. On the bright side, Crane U1 works very well along with Crane super. You need to be at the right distance for U1, but you still should have enough time to dash in while buffering the ultra motion. Otherwise, if you have enough health, you can just take the chip damage and punish accordingly.

you can interupt blankas u1 with gekiro. you have to do it when he jumps in the air with the ball and is at its peak or on the way down. ex gekiro beat it clean, hk gekiro, oga and crane c.hk (+anynormal like s.mp) trade and therefore interupt the rest of the ultra (u get like 100-120 dmg). lp / mp mantis super work aswell. hp hands can interupt him, when he falls down, but trades afterwards (tho most of the time u dont get the full dmg)

if he rolls to u, timed ex gekiro AND lk gekiro will beat it again, clean. mantis lp / mp super (mp has to be closer) beat it clean aswell. u1 will trade if not used near point blank. same with any poke / sweep.
if he does it full screen crane c.hp will beat it clean (+awzum dmg / stun) if you use it when he’s at the peak of the jump. (tho, keep in midn he can delay the start of the roll)

you can see that his hit box changes after the jump.

I’ll have to try again because the moment Blanka jumps into the air was what I was referencing. When I tried an HK Gekiro, the ultra hit me normally as if I had jumped into it. With Ex, Gen dodged the initial jump without touching Blanka, but he landed on the ball.

blanka hits low, and then jumps in the air. [now u can punish] then lands and rolls.

Yeah, I just tested it out again. I think my problem was that I tried to punish too early, causing Gen to actually beat Blanka into the air. You’re right, I was able to get ex-gekiro to work by waiting an extra beat. Sweet, glad it still works in some form. HK Gekiro traded for me. I was able to get Mantis U1 to punish Blanka’s Ultra with mixed results. I think the timing is a bit strict. However, I was able to get Mantis U1 to beat Blanka’s super outright.

I tested out Shout of Earth (ground) while I was at it. I found it best to block both bolts and punish with Mantis U1. You can also jump over both, but it’s slightly risky if you miss the timing. You can punish with Crane U2 as well, but not during each strike because Blanka surrounds himself with electricity. You can hit him immediately after the first bolt, or wait until he recovers after the second one.

Im having rediculous problem’s against adon… His backflip kick seems 2 be safe on block. @ least the Ex version is. He’s able to get a jab in and link into in combo he chooses… plus his standing m. kick beats out almost All of Gen’s move’s. He’s a faster more powerful version of gen when it comes 2 the normal’s… ANyone have adon tips?? Ive tried to U1 mantis his backflip kick but it’s 2 damn fast. Im stuck my win ratio is 1-10. Who has the answers?

If he does Jaguar Tooth while you have Ultra or super you can catch him for free on reaction with crane super/ultra. If you don’t, you might want to backdash after he does Jaguar Tooth because most will go for either Jaguar rising, a throw, or a crossup attempt. Alternatively you could also use Gen’s mantis s.hp to beat him out of non EX versions of his Jaguar Tooth.

Gekiro will also work but usually trades unless you have predicted/timed it. I would suggest staying close to him constantly being annoying and crossing him up, basically play the game he wants to play himself really.
