SSF4 Gen Match-ups & Strategies (Old)

Its pretty much all in the post, I’ll tidy it up and arrange it so its easier to read before I PM you

Really I was trying to be nice. What I really wanted to say was. “Did you not notice the disclaimer at the beginning of the thread?”

There is a reason I put that. I just happened to catch your post. However there has been times where I’m not checking this forum as often. And have had people message me like “bro why aren’t you putting up my match-up info in the spoiler?” Well there is a good reason, look at the disclaimer. I don’t have time to skim through every post to find what is useful for the spoilers. So please in the future PM me.

What part of ‘I’ll tidy it up and put it in a PM’ suggests I saw it
To be honest I just skipped to the bits that had buttons to reveal. My bad. I have no problem if my advice is missed, Hakan is a pretty non-event in tournaments etc. and the advice already there will cover most of the average Hakan players tbh.
I noticed it in the AE one already though

My comment wasn’t towards your reply, it was implying what I really wanted to say originally. "Cool if you want something added to the match-up. Please PM it to me like I requested everyone to do so in my first post."

i was seeking for some infos now that i got mmy 360 , and everything is empty :frowning:

They’re not empty for me. Maybe it was the whole SRK upgrading thing?

I’m using firefox 4.0.1 and safari (whatever the latest is - except it decided today to indent all replies on a page and crash every page load so is fuched).

does anyone know where i can get this app for android it doesnt seem to be available in the market anymore

Not sure about android.

Ugh. Apparently Yun and Yang’s jump frames are same as Blanka/Adon. Fck them.

damn we need frame data on the go more than ever right now hope another is released and on the android soon for AE

Guy’s buffed c.LK now punishes blocked roll. He can do c.LK -> s.MP xx EX Hozanto, tho it’s a 1f link.

Hey guys I’m having a difficult time with the gen match-up, primarily punushing (or better yet stopping) oga, gekiro and some of his pokes and how to safely handle him on his wake-up and my wake-up. I play Viper and if anyone can help me understand this match-up I greatly appreciate it ^_^.

I play Viper a bit myself and I actually like to use meter on my opponent’s wakeup as an EX Seismo Feint to a grab/fierce thunderknuckle/etc because of it’s invincibility, but overall blocking is a best bet as the only reason someone would wakeup grab is if you are breathing down their neck on wakeup.

I hate to say this, but the Viper board should be better at answering, as I kind of want to say random strong and jab thunderknucles would be a good bet.

I’ve played viper a lot more than Gen during Super so I’ll give my two cents on that. Interesting match, one of my favorite match-ups as either. You have the two most technical characters. Viper being slightly harder execution wise but Gen being almost as hard, on top of that he needs character specific knowledge for a lot of his tricks. I am basing my experience of the countless matches I have had in the past with Portugals finest Gen player Alfonso (me playing Viper).

First of all, pressure the fuck out of Gen, stay on him a lot. He has piss poor defense and trying to play a waiting/zoning game with him is pretty dangerous because he has two jump arcs and his Oga can be misleading and also used for feinting (causing you to do something stupid like hp.tk and such). What I’ve I have always found great is to stay well withing footsie range (close enough to lp.tk) and use your tk as a poke. Combine that with a lot of c.mk>feinting/overhead/cross-up bk/ *insert other options, and you have Gen exactly where you want him to be. The interesting thing is that Gen is in some regards much like a more ‘traditional’ (footsies, normals) viper in that he also relies heavily on momentum and shennanigans to do big things. Be sure to not overdo your pressure game because a good Gen player will be preying for that c.mp>hands or any other variant of that (or TC if you play AE which I assume you are) and if he has super…you know the drill.

So much for some general tips on the match-up all imo ofcourse. Now some of the specific things you’ve mentioned.

  • Gens wake-up is pretty ass. He can either do a (ex) gekiro or block unless you mistime your burnkick or jump in completely in wehich case he use his air super/ultra. If timed correctly a SJC instant burnkick cross-up beats any of Gens Gekiro versions except EX version. Once he catches on to this it is a guessing game, will he do gekiro or will you not jump in causing him to whiff completely? General basic mindgame at its finest here. Like the poster above me said, you can bait his reversal wake-up by doing ex seismo which if timed correctly gives you invincibility.

-Watch out for the second gekiro kick. When Gens whiffs his initial gekiro he will ‘float’ in the air for a bit. He can still press for the 2nd follow-up kick. This is a very oldschool Gen shenanigan trick, don’t fall for it.

  • random Oga is horrible and if you have any experience you should be able to block it from any direction and as soon as you block it you have enough time to punish any oga version with ex seismo or hp> ex seismo or whatever really. A good Gen shouldn’t randomly use Oga at all unless he uses it to feint or as a cross-up setup (you can learn more about those in the shenanigans thread or the oga setup thread somewhere around here).

  • Regarding his pokes, that’s Gens biggest strength in this match-up. Try to keep pressure on him and use a lot of tk pokes, those should beat a lot of Gens pokes or atleast trade when done from the apex distance.

There’s a lot more to be said on this match-up but I’m tired haha.

You’re probably better off asking in the Viper thread but here’s a couple of bits.

  1. On your wakeup Gen can safe jump you all week long and option select ex.gekiro/stuff to punish ex seismo’s. This means neither fierce tk nor ex seismo are good options on your wakeup.

  2. Gen’s crane c.mk is projectile invulnerable for the duration (iirc) of the move so he can use it to avoid seismos and burn kicks (both are projectile moves) and if he spaces it correctly then your burn kick will land right on its active frames. Doesn’t do much damage but if keeps you out and will slowly chip away.

  3. Do not be throwing out random fierce TKs or jumping, Gen’s crane super starts in 1+0 frames and will pull the sun from the sky.

  4. Beware Gen’s frame traps, his s.lp and s.mp in mantis are amazing on block, don’t press buttons.

  5. Like Warlike said, get on top of him, his best reversal is 5 frames and its hittable box is almost identical to the hitting box. Gekiro isn’t a great reversal really and his super as a punish is quite slow starting without many invulnerable frames.

  6. Beware Gen’s option selects if he has super. If he does anything meaty on you do not be trying to backdash out or you will eat 400 damage+.

Hmm, thanks alot I wondered why that super caught my safe jump, was like 0_o. Does that mean Oga is -8 on block or something? and yeah I was having some difficulty adjusting to the diagonal dives and trying to hit him out of it or after it. So like by using EX Seismo as he does EX Gekiro it should miss and the Seismo should hit him and I can punish if decides to float with the second kick? Can you please elaborate?

Viper boards are pretty shit tbh asking there isn’t much help

I wish I could help but I dont really understand the matchup well enough.

You got PM.

msg purebeast, i’m sure he can send you a link or email it to you after you paypal him (i think it’s 99 cents). There’s also a news posting on the front page from about a month ago that may give the links.

Well i googled it, here you go:
https://market.android.com/developer?pub=Andrew Stanton

roll is -3 on block, it’s punishable by anyone with a 3f crouching short or jab. I know Balrog can do it, although it’s difficult to get that frame perfect jab.

Also @Paladinight, on wakeup if you do hp.tk feint, you can probably activate his O/S and block in time. I know if Balrog does a 5f safe jump with a buffered cl.hp (5fsu), viper can do hp.tk feint and recover faster than if she did ex.seizmo feint.

This works. Just tested it, piece of pie to do if I can do it and I don’t play Viper. Mid-screen Viper’s backdash is also better than the ex.wtf OS.

What is Gens response to Ibuki? I seem to have problems with her after she gets a knock down and starts the kunai bs.
