SSF4 Gen Match-ups & Strategies (Old)

Its not good. But it gets better in AE

U2 is godlike against Guile, whenever he anti-airs your jump in with a normal (c.hp) the next time I’ll do crane U2. That way they’ll think twice about anti-airing me when I jump in. It’s even better when they try to airthrow you, free crane U2 again. After putting them on notice, they will let you jump in once you have ultra usually making you able to pressure thyem and cross-up up much more easily.

Just to add about c.MK vs booms. Only stand up charge LP boom allows you to duck. Basically if it’s a light version, don’t even bother.

I wanted to add some thoughts on the Cammy matchup, I believe it’s the matchup that I know the best because of constantly playing 2 good Cammy players in my area.

I do agree with a lot of what Warlike stated in his tips, I believe the matchup is 5 - 5, maybe 5.5 - 4.5 in her favor.

Tips
We all know how good Gens footsies game is. Cammy does not have good footsies, at all. This matchup would honestly be in Gen’s favor if not for TKCS. And I don’t mean TKCS up close or in strings. If you go for poke and she does TKCS, you will eat it and get knocked down.

This is how I approach the match, Cammy is a powerhouse up close so don’t let her get to that range. Zone her out with pokes all day, use s.mk and s.mp to keep her away. You can whiff punish her s.rh with a sweep and counter her c.mk with s.mk at range. If she tries to Cannon Strike to get in, just (Crane)C.Hk. You will either beat her clean or trade, but this trade is completely in your favor, 120 damage vs 60 for regular strike and 80 for ex. Now, she can counter this by jumping and doing a late strike to mess with your timing, so just go for it a little later than usual.

Now that you have a ground gameplan, there is a choice you have to make. You can EX Gekiro to beat every strike clean, this is standing, or you can save meter. You can get 163 damage for every strike she attempts or you can stop her striking completely. I always save meter in this matchup, Crane Super beats out her cannon strikes CLEAN. I’ve used this hundreds of times and saw it get beat once, but Cammy was super high in the air. If she gets a knockdown and you have super, she absolutely can not jump. If she leaves the ground, just super for free. It will auto correct and beat crossup strikes as well. I have a video I’ll link to me against MarlinPie whenever it gets uploaded to show it.

In this matchup, you will land some pokes and get an opportunity to land Mantis super, but I believe it is absolutely in your best interest to just save it. 400 damage is a lot, but preventing her from pressuring is even greater IMO.

If you do get knocked down, the best tactic is to just block, you can backdash, but it can be OS’d, so watch it. This matchup has facets and moments where the game is stacked in favor of one character over the other, but they end up balancing each other out. My real weakness against Cammy is teching, I will not crouch tech, it’s a terrible idea against her. So I just attempt a tech when I think my opponent will throw, so I get thrown a decent amount, but I’m actively choosing to get thrown rather than potentially eat a TKCS combo, 300+ damage and a lot of stun, 400-500 iirc.

And for the Cammys that get frustrated and try to do a move to get in; spiral arrow, spin knuckle through a poke, or hooligan, just lk gekiro them all. Freh.

Against Dudley: Crane c.hk is not a viable AA (at least for me). It has traded 1/10 and lost 9/10. my mantis s.hp seems to have more chances to trade, still nothing seems to beat his j.hk.

Overall, I am having no luck in AA against Dudley. Any suggestions?

space yourself further away and use mantis crouch fierce. if he’s right on top of you, just focus and backdash. other than that you’ll have to block or risk the trade or combo

I myself don’t have any problems AA’ing Dudley with Crane C.HK.

what do you guys use vs Rog jump ins? His hitbox are weird and crane c.HK misses or gets stuffed. Gekiro comes out too slow gets stuffed. Haven’t had too much success with Mantis c.HP. Suggestions?

mantis standing fp works too. i dont think ive had a crouch fierce stuffed by rog before. even when he was right on top of me with a jump in RH

where did he jump from, and what button did he use?

He mixed up with the jump Fierce and Round House. I didn’t get to try c.HP too much because I found by the time it actually came out it would get stuffed or trade.

I did some testing in training mode with Rog. I feel it’s really dependent on range and who hits a button first. If he jumps while you 2 are close to each other, you can ©C.Hk him clean (basically directly under him). If he jumps in at tip J.Fp range, it’s almost impossible to beat. Best chances are with a (M)C.Fp though. But I feel like if your reaction time is on point, you can beat him clean every time. As long as you hit the correct AA before he throws out his poke, you’ll just counter hit him or beat it. But if you wait too long, you get counter hit, same time equals a trade. Just because of how low Balrogs jump in attacks are angled. Best AA is Ex Gekiro though, no doubt. But it’s tough because you want the meter in the matchup, I know I do.

ya i know the c.HK works if he’s very close, but his Hurtbox is super small when he’s far away. I guess I should’ve stated when he’s some what far out. where maybe only his elbow is over me. ya ex gekiro was the only move I could get off in time (besides super). I’ll try to use more c.HP or even s.HP

Yea. His far jumpins are so good :-/. You can do an early (M)S.Hp and the second hit will usually beat him, but at that range, I’m probably not even gonna try to AA. The risk -reward sucks IMO

ya I was thinking the same thing about not even bothering. But sometimes you need to try to get as much damn damage on him as possible.

what a terrible day it is when one decides to not AA. lets just throw all the fundamentals out the window.

you are doing AA wrong

Sorry, but that trade is in Rogs favor. I’m good. I’d rather just keep it on the ground or try to better position myself.

i get your point, but sometimes with gen, i feel like its not worth risking. this is mostly from online tho. if you are a frame late you get to eat that counterhit jump in +fat combo, and start thinking maybe i should have just blocked.

ridiculous when you really think about it.

^That. And we’re talkina far range j.hp, he lands and is around a quarter screen away at least. We’re not losin anything for not taking that risk. Yes, I realize it’s potentially free damage, but fuckin up hurts.

Personally, mantis cr.fierce is silly good AA against Rog and crane cr.HK never traded or gave me any noticable issues as AA.

Even if it does trade, you’re screwing with their head. You’re telling them jumping isn’t an option. You’re limiting their options. It’s not going to trade every time. In any match up, you can’t just let them jump, I think it’s insane to me for anyone to say, “nah I won’t AA”.

Woah

Look at that

I was talking about 1 scenario lol

A very specific scenario at that, I never said I let him jump for free
