SSF4 Gen Match-ups & Strategies (Old)

Hey i have a showdown with an adon today. I know early gekiro will stop the jaguar kick before he hits me. I need to know if gekiro will stop adons wall jump and ex wall jump. Also is crane c.hk a good idea against jaguar kick and wall dives. What ultra do you use against him? Im leaning towards crane u2 since he may dp me on jump ins. Or should i try to get the damage after punch super while i have the chance?
Im sorry for all the questions but this is a hard match up for me.

you can punish tooth with gekiro all day long. I’d stick with u1, mantis can punish his tooths easily on reaction.

Stop wall dives with st.hp. This way you aren’t whiffing anything if he decided to kick right in front of you right out of your range.

Really hard match up is a really good Rose. Especially when she is using Ultra 2. I think this match is where you have to guess alot. Punish is limited against Soul Spiral. Can stay back and shoot firebal with a Crouching HP as Anti air.
I was playing this Rose the other day, and doesnt seem to be anything I could have done. Only way I could win was use Honda and turtle most of the times.

against rose you can absorb all of her fireballs and use U2 crane 2 splice her up sit on a life lead while poking her to death. Learning more of Gen’s combo’s could also be helpful. If they zone you use U2 make them come to you. Don’t jump in also Gen’s roll is invincible to fireballs if you’re in range.

I would definately not absorb her fireballs too much due to the fact a good Rose will use slide alot in combination with a fireball as a shield. If you absorb too much (become too predictable) and she has super, yeah…

Also, I think you can do crane c.mk to get under her fireballs AND counter her slide if she does that aswell. Not sure about this, it’ll trade probably but I’m not sure if that’s in Gens advantage.

Against good roses you need 2 focus fireballs warlike if you’re retired STAY retired.you can easily backdash out of the way of theslide’s… upclose she will use mostly 1 frame combo links in to her jab spiral only punish for it that I’ve found is the mantis super and thats IF she back dashes… which most likely she will Roses have great dashes and they lov e to play keep away. HEr U1 does beat gen crane air ultra before and afterwards so bee wary of that… she can stay completely out of Gen’s range so the fight will be long your defense will have to be annoyingly good. Once youfinally get in and if your execution is onpoint do your best and SAFESt combo 2 destroy her. If the Rose payer has Ultra 2 Just turtle and run away if she get’s place she will try to mix you up for the throw. Also they like to air grab behind you to cross you up with the rotating energy balls. This is a HARD fight for Gen if the Rose is good because her combo’s are all really fast onpar with BISONS… and she hits HARD especially if she has super and a good U2 using Rose WILL have super.

M. kick hands on block is possible with spiral as well…
So your best strategy is to use her zoning to build your U2 up safely… practice in trining automatic ultra 2 so you do it on command as soon as you hear Soul… u2 that purple haired pornstar. FInd the range after absorbing a few fireballs where you can jump in and destroy her watch her crossup all of her moves are faster then yours so look 4 opening’s If Most of her combo’s are going to be safe.You’re going to have to poke her and thrw her for the win while stacking up your own meter… Nuetral jump her reversals soul spiral etc. and play as random as possible. This is a really hard matchup for Gen so hopefully another player can come by and help you.

Also play MORE roses!! It will come to you I just finished a set with a really good rose player and it was annoying but I got it 5-5…

I think this match is in roses favor and gen needs so many more options its not even funny.

First of all, I’ve been playing again for a week now so whatever. I have no idea who the fuck you are.

Second of all, who the fuck absorbs fireballs from Rose besides fullscreen? She has way too many options to take advantage of you absorbing fireballs such as (ex) spiral, slide, her super/U1.

Here’s a write-up I made for the matchup thread a while ago with Tha Messiah, no need to thank, if you have anything actualy useful to add send it to Messiah so he’ll add it, make sure you test it first obviously:

Guaranteed Super/Ultras:
Slide: Mantis Super.
Soul Throw: On Whiff, Mantis Ultra 1&2/Super, Crane Ultra1&2?/Super.
c.MP > Soul Spiral: Can be countered with mantis super on block. (It should be noted that this works on her lk mk and EX versions of the Soul Spiral, but not her hk version! But most Rose users use lk and mk as part of her BnB usually so it’s still viable.)

Strategy:
A fairly even matchup in my opinion. Rose players love to bait you into jumping over their fireballs so they can Soul Throw you out of your jump. So watch out and space yourself properly. When she has Ultra1 don’t ever jump over her fireballs because it’s a free ultra setup for Rose. And you know what, Rose players love to slide into throw so be ready to tech that crap or super it on block.
Oga can be useful but watch out with being predictable, as she can soul throw you out of a cross-up Oga if she’s fast enough. The best thing to do against rose is be agressive, once you’re in you’re in. Rose doesn’t really have a solid reversal or anything so don’t be scared to apply pressure. Make sure you watch her ultra meter though because if you jump and she has Ultra2 you get 2 shiny orbs in your face and possibly a soul throw or super afterwards.

okay guys i need a little advice fighting sakura, the one i fight in the Oklahoma ranbats is rather good with her, and her pressure is destroying me. the matches go pretty even until she gets a knock down on me, then she goes crazy with pressure. so any advice on this would be helpful.

Focus attacking her when she is grounded is bad IMO. Really the only time I FA is when she does her Overhead. I just want to know what you are having problems with as per maybe footsies or AA’s? Can Sakura players get in on your very easily?

it more so around her pressure game, i never focus attack her because she can attack so fast. im working on my aa but i can kept her out most of the time, but the problem i am having is surviving the one knock down she does get on gen. it surprising how much she can hurt gen, i dont know maybe i need to fight against her more which lucky i have the ability now. maybe that why i can handle cammy , viper and somewhat rufus pressure.

oh crane aa is great, for some reason tho i am having problems using his mantis aa.

I have a good friend of mine that plays an amazing Sakura. What do you mean with ‘pressure’? Like lk tatsu> lp>lk ex tatsu>reset?

Well, she is pretty free on wakeup anyway so crossing that bitch up is recommended at all times anyway. Her only ‘escape’ is ex shoryuken, which has no air hitbox haha. As for regular blockstring/crossup wakeup pressure, it just requires practice to block I’d say. If you don’t play many Sakura’s it can be tricky with her fast overhead kick and all that. Why not head over to the Sakura section and post a training request to gain experience with her?

yea i dont have many experience with her so i was asking for any advice because the sakura matchup has no info. damn i think about that suggestion, although i usually only play late online since i mostly work at night. so it hard for me to try set something up.

i guess i just have to keep fighting him and figuring out how to fight her.

Vs. sakura you should block all of her block strings… go on youtube and search good sakura players to learn her combo’s… they are all the same jab she only has about 8. ex hurricane kick is punishable by mantis super & ultra 2 mantis as well… If she jumps in anti-air with medium kick gekiro. or super crane. You wan to establish a poke game early in the match so either m. kick crane or focus her fireballs as lon as you’re half a screen away you should be good. If you rush her down she only has the dragon punch 2 get you off of her. Wait for it and punish with me. punch fierch punch low kick gekiro (all in mantis of course.)

Suggested antiairs would be cr. fierce kick 2 lower your hit box. Or even cran low medium kick. In the air she beats you out often so I’d suggest not to jump much in this matchup. U1 is your best option unless the sakura you play is fireball happy. then grab u2 2 slice that lesbian ryu clone up.

Synopsis: Out poke her so she has a hard time getting in. Jump in with Crane fierce always but rarely. While applying pressure watch out for ex. dragon punch. During block strings turtle 4 at least 2 combo’s until you see an obvious opening. Emphasis on obvious. Once you get a feel for her combo’s the matchup won’t be so hard. Once she does ex. hurrican kick block hit super… hit ultra out poke some more end match. Sakura’s like to mix you up after hurricancombo’s they like to run underneith you dash behind you and start another combo. Just check other Sakura’s on youtube’s setup’s and you’ll see it from a mile away.

Mantis c.HP works wonders if you play vs a sakura that sets her self up with fireballs while in mid range. Gen should be able to get his poke out before her fireball as it’s really slow compared to other fireball characters.

Actually, it’s not so bad to focus fireballs. Now if you’re just stupid to absorb a fireball when she’s obviously ready for another special, then you’re just stupid. But it’s not a bad strategy. Especially since her normals are by far better than Gen’s normals. You kinda have to absorb fireballs and build up your ultra meter. Characters like Guile and Rose who can walk behind their fireballs are in my opinion the hardest match-ups because even their defense game is better than Gen’s.

This is in my opinion a gay fight for Gen.
I usually keep away and build U1/U2 meter, and then start playing footsies, and punish anything I can w/ super/ultra.
It’s only a fair fight when you have super, which is for a brief moment since super takes so long to build up.
