SSF4 Dudley Match-up Thread

I was in training and had Honda doing headbutts to see what I could punish. This was a a week or 2 ago and I forgot to make notes but I think only HP headbutt was punishable on block (maybe MP too, I forget) didn’t try reversal U1 verse any headbutts, but if you can react to a headbutt, you can beat all with cr. lp, cr. mp, st. HP, Ultra 2.

I´ll say dictator-dudley its 5-5.

Use Rolling Thunder for this matchup, the damage you get from CC its not worth it because RT punishes both EX psycho crusher and teleports, both of his reliable reversals. When dudley has RT stored bison has no options to get out without risking loosing the round.

His footsies are very good, specially st.mk but so is dudley´s fierce and fwd.fierce. Just be patient and block, if he gets too confident poking go for standing HK CH combos or counterpoke him with fierce.

The thing is at the right range you can jump at bison almost for free with j.RH just dont get predictable with it, most of the time you will beat st.HK, dictator´s lacks a decent AA and dudley has one of the best jumpin moves in the game.

Of course this sounds easy, but against a good bison you need a lot of patience and try to dont get cornered. Once you have ultra and you get in/knock him down he´s screwed because his only safe option is block, you can always come back against dictator even if you have lost 3/4 HP because of dudley´s obscene damage output and dictator´s lack of options.

If you get cornered, be patient and block, look for those holes at his pressure and try to get out (there´s always a risk, just know when those risks are minor).

On a sidenote, if you dont have ultra or dont want to waste it you can punish EX PC with MP MGB.

Both characters can rape the other if get caught on the wrong position and bison footsies are hell for dudley, but the damage ouput difference is too high and so are the options in worst case scenarios.

PD: Rolling thunder punishes all honda headbutts

PD2: If you guys are interested I can break it down more in depht, as well as writing it for Akuma, Ryu, Ibuki, Cody (ill say I know those matchups pretty well among others)

Hi Sharin, that’s a really great writeup, thanks. What do you do about all the headstomp business? And please do add the other writeups, it’d be great the Dudley community could compile at least some basic pointers on every matchup!

Abel’s super has different invincibility depending on what button you hit to activate it. The MP one has throw invincibility… Just block the super and punish.

Here some quick tips on Dhalsim… BC has a very good Dhalsim player (Mar… look for him at Evo) so I’ve fought this matchup a whole lot of times. Here’s some ideas that I’d like to share.

  1. DON’T USE ROLLING THUNDER. I usually stay away from this super in the first place, cause I like Corkscrew Cross better, but the main issue with this super against Dhalsim is that it CANNOT beat his LP fireball… the fireball moves so slow that you get hit by it instead. If you’re interested in punishing a fireball, I find the CC works better, because if it hits, it enters its animation and therefore goes through all fireballs. Furthermore, CC is just too good in the corner… you can effectively nullify any life lead with one combo.

  2. Dhalsim’s st.FP is by far his best weapon against Dudley. It can’t be cross countered, and it basically nullifies ducking. Therefore this move, plus fireballs, can effectively keep Dud at bay. There are two things that you can do to get around it. One is a trade with cr.MK, which knocks Dhalsim down and allows you to get close. The other, better option is to stay just out of its range and punish it clean with HK. What I tend to do now is absorb a fireball and dash back. Often a Dhalsim will throw out a FP to try to hit me on the dashback, but if you do it right, you are just out of range, which gives you an opportunity to hit HK clean, which of course you buffer into an EX MGB etc.

  3. Punish yoga snipe (jumping FP) with a properly timed EX MGB. The timing’s tight, but it works. You can also cross counter it.

  4. I’m starting to find that SSB works pretty well against Dhalsims who like to throw. Because Dhalsim’s so limited in the corner, they’re often looking to tech a throw and teleport out of there. So what I’ll do when he’s waking up is cr.LP, cr.LP, st.RH (this is all usually blocked), then LP ducking in, and begin the mixup of either another combo, a throw, or SSB to beat his throw attempt. For some reason it works really well against Dhalsim, and even if you screw up or he blocks you, there’s not much he can punish you with unless he has super.

  5. st.FP and fwd-st.FP are really really effective pokes against Dhalsim, but they both get beaten by his st.FP. Use them wisely.

  6. A really late j.FP from the right distance can stuff a surprising number of his AA options. The best setup is forward throw, dash once, jump, and hit the FP just before you land. This is of course a safe jump, but it also sticks your punch way out in front of your body, and therefore you can beat a lot of his AA stuff. It’s a good way to get around his fireball game too, if your spacing and timing is right.

That’s all for now. I’ll post more as I continue to struggle with this very difficult (albeit winnable) matchup.

Fantastic write-up, I pretty much agree with all of this. I would also add that you can use Towards + LP (Slipping Jab) to beat Bison’s Standing HK from the right range safely.

Would you mind if I added this to the Dudley guide when I update it?

Also, please do write up the other matches ;).

Wait, BSB also avoids Fuerte’s meaty normals? cr.HK or f.MK?

No he’s talking about scrub fuertes who do nothing but badly spaced tortillas and splashes on wakeup. Bsb has no invincibility so it loses to meaty everything.

I’d like to add that Rolling Thunder also loses to Sim Ultra 1. You hit them once and your invincibility wears off and his ball hits you for full hits. After that happened i never picked rolling thunder vs sim again.

you have to be careful about CC’ing the snipe, I’ve had the CC whiff vs sim or seth when i cc’ed their j.fp (i can’t remember if it’s neutral or back jump).

Don’t forget to punish whiff sim s.fp with s.rh buffered ex mgb if they mash on it and have it whiff right in front of you. it’s your free ticket in.

any missed not blocked s.FP from sim can be punished with s.RH into Ex MGB

also another info seth s.FP can be punished U1 if ur in mid range i wonder if this works on sim to

btw BSB stands for what ?

i thought SSB = short swing blow but BSB?

Though it looks similar, Seth’s HP is significantly slower than sim’s, especially when it comes to recovery. You could probably tag it with RT on hit if close enough.

BSB = Backswing Blow?

Not so useful, and I’m sure it has to have been mentioned before, but jaguar tooth is braindead, even for someone like me with horrible reflexes. When you see adon head for the wall, just hit HP. Either he flys into your fist, which beat him clean, or he gets a tiny amount of meter while dudley poses. Ex tends to trade.

bsb is short swing blow but it became a habit of 3s players to call that move bac swing blow. i mean cmon, hes movin back

Lol. No wonder, Dudley’s wake up game outside of EX Upper is trash. Gotta to avoid getting taken down by Fuerte, otherwise good bye game.
Fuerte’s cr.HK/f.MK makes Dudley’s wake up options a nightmare - can’t do shit besides blocking.

Hi IlPeru, do you know if Fuerte’s f.MK also goes through Dudley’s EX upper on wake-up? Fuerte’s f.MK does some weird shit sometimes.

The Dudley-Fuerte match is pretty even, imo. SSB only works on badly spaced moves, but each character can pressure the other on wakeup extremely well. I wonder how well OS MGBs would work on Fuerte’s EX run away; seems like you’d get fucked when he does Guacamole.

Also, only Honda’s HP headbutt is punishable with MGB. MP MGB is the one to use. Of course, Rolling Thunder punishes them all on block.

Im pretty sure SSB works against tortilla 100% of the time, you can cancel it into super for big damage (be careful if he has ultra)

have u tested it? Im not saying it to be a dbag i just wanna know for sure. I main both And I’ve seen that it does work against badly spaced ones i don’t about safe tortillas though??

I’ve tested this, and unless I’m forgetting something big, I’m stupid etc., Vega’s Flying Barcelona and Sky High Claw are punishable by Ultra 1. This worked for me countless times in ranked, so I went into training mode with all block, me blocking etc., and time and time again it punished. It really helps against online scrubs who keep throwing out those two. Idk if this was discovered or not, but i didn’t see it on the punish list so yeah (:

Awesome, thank you Sharin.

How to Deal with Cammy?

How do you deal with a Cammy? Her pokes are a annoying, and are killing a lot of my options that i see atm.
