SSF4 Akuma Match Up Thread

I’ve been having a lot of trouble with the Balrog match-up lately. Just found out today (at least I think I did) that you can’t buffer a c.MK into Ultra the way you can against Sag, Ryu, etc, to punish jump-ins. Balrog’s j.HP seems to override the buffer everytime and knock me out of Ultra.

Can anyone verify that this is the case, and that it’s not just me being crap? Also, any general tips for going agains Rog? Difficult match-up, imo.

Very difficult. I played a rog about 15+ matches and thought I had a good idea of the match til I played another, better rog. Very difficult.

crmk demon always works. If it CAN beat demon flip kick, j.hp is nothing. You did it a little early.

Oh great. So Juri can do a late dive kick close to the ground after she uses the “get out up in the air” move to hit you out of the Demon, kinda like Rufus :confused: I thought I baited that bitch!

Can that move even be punished with a proper AA Demon? Is it just a case of having to do it later than usual because of the wierd timing on the diving kick?

c.mk demon works perfectly on balrog, you must be doing it too early, his jumping hp/hk has 7/6 active frames so your 6 frames of invincibility should be enough. If he does it low enough to the ground, then his active frames will run out and he will be stuck on the ground for 4 frames for your demon to grab him. I’ve been using U2 on Juri, cause I’m so scared of the corner pinwheel pressure which I never seem to punish and the fact that you can teleport back when you see her jump and U2 just as she lands if she dive kicks. If you see her just hit the ground when you startup your ultra, it will hit her in her standing recovery.

What should I do against a balrog who does nothing but crouch and mash lp whenever I get close to him?

Frame trap him with c.mp strings and abuse counterhit sweeps/st.hk off of it. Or you can also throw in a srk off a blockstring and that will catch him if he’s mashing (might want to have two bars just in case it gets blocked so you can fadc out). Once you land a knockdown, go to town with a mixup between demon flip palm safe jump and demon flip throw.

Cool, thanks. Fought a balrog last night and beat him a couple times, but then after that all he did was crouch, mashed lp whenever I got close to him and headbutted whenever I tried to jump. The only way I could get in on him was to do demon flip throws and teleport away.

Well, to begin with, you really shouldn’t be trying to get in on Rog when he’s standing - his normals are far superior to yours and he will usually outfootsie you with the range of his c.lp, st.hk and sweep. Work at zoning him with fireballs, and know the proper spacing. If he tries to TAP through them - if your spacing is right - you can srk on reaction. Any jump-ins should be met with either c.hp if its a deep jump-in or a late hp. srk if its shallow to avoid trading with his ridiculously good j.hk. Once you have the advantage, either off a knockdown or you get a jump on him somehow, then start working in frame traps and whatnot. Practice blockstrings of either c.lp,c.lp,c.mp or c.mp,c.mp. If he tries to mash between them, your c.mp will hit first giving you a counterhit, which lets you combo into sweep. And when you get that untechable knockdown, start safe jumping him if he’s headbutt happy. If he smartens up and stops throwing out silly headbutts, then start incorporating demon flip throws.

what vortex to use on blanka?

Blanka is someone you cant really vortex. You have to really rely on safe jumps and OS since he has some solid ways of killing your demon flips and crossups.

One good option against Blanka is to purposely whiff a palm cross up and land at the edge of c.MK range, and then hit a sweep to knock them out of their electric attack.

Why would they wake up with electricity when you’re that far away?

Because they hit electricity when they see the flip or the cross-up tatsu. If you tatsu earlier than usual, you will land further away.

Just got done talking to Perfect Legend who talked wiht Tokido at Evo. Tokido says that Akuma’s bad match ups are Balrog, Bison, Honda, and Cammy. He and Daigo both say that Balrog is the best character in the game.

I sort of disagree with them on Rog, but the other 3 I can definitely see where they are coming from with that.

I disagree with Balrog. Sometimes I agree with Bison, but sometimes I feel if Akuma has all of his OS down and zones properly it’s even. Cammy and Honda are definitely disadvantage though.

Honda, really? Wow. I recall a time when a fireballer was Honda’s worst nightmare, lol. What makes Bison such a bad match? He has no AA so I would assume he’s almost free on wake-up???

if a sick mix up bison rapes u it hurts. also his safe scissor kicks i personally feel are a bitch cause i hate being chipped cause akuma already has low stamina even chip hurts.
