SSF4 AE T.Hawk Match-up Thread

I played a friends Guy last night. s.mp and U2 make it soooo free.

Sounds like they played the matchup wrong. Anyone jumping at THawk and trying to get close is giving us free wins. Try playing the keep away and punish version of this matchup and it becomes more difficult. Which is the style that we will be seeing more and more once people get more matchup experience.

Yeah, he totally did play it wrong. But even if they try to keep away and just deal damage slowly, anything that he throws out and you block will still be a free typhoon for you. I think Guy will end up being one of the better matchups for Hawk.

How badly broken is Blanka against Hawk? I got hit out of the CD with Blanka’s DF+FP SLIDE. And yes, I mean out of the air. More than once.

hey you sound like you play smart players and know what you’re doing. we should talk on aim sometime bud

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or sincerity. Just message me on PSN or XBL if you want. I don’t use IM much anymore.

But yes I do play good people though I’m not that good myself. But I noticed things were much easier the first couple weeks when people still tried to jump at THawk and stayed close.

It was sincerity. Honestly

There’s almost zero reason to use CD against Blanka. Hell, you shouldn’t even really be jumping towards him. Blanka’s df.HP works as an AA provided the opponent does an attack that can be low profiled under, and it was the same way in SF4. He’s the last character you want to give free damage against with Hawk.

Get a life lead on blanka and make him come to you really is the best way to fight him. Hes so good at running away its so fucking frustrating.

Also, crouch strong and stand forward are fantastic

That’s a good thing in the blanka match-up if they are scrubby enough to use slide as an AA just empty jump block to spd or ultra 1 slide won’t hit an empty. But blankas still 2-8 imo.

^^^ Right.

I should’ve added, if he has a life lead your best bet is to slowly force him into the corner (Even if it means blocking Hori Balls to do it). If it’s a scrub Blanka chances are he’ll use EX Rainbow Ball to escape, which loses to a properly timed s.HP/s.HK (Or U2 if he’s dumb enough to do it then). Against a proper one… good luck beating him in footsies lol. He can duck s.MP and s.HP but both can still trade pretty consistently with his crouching normals for what it’s worth.

Oh, I know…I just happened to notice this last night when I was messing around in arcade mode.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but vs Rog. If he gets you with Headbutt -> Ultra 1, depending on the height he got thawk, thawk’s weird hitbox can actually make him get juggled out of the ultra and rog will end up in the corner. Not reliable but putting it out there.

Out-laming Blanka’s is so boring. Reading this thread prior to playing one was helpful though. s.mk on reaction is great for dealing with Blanka balls.

Deejay has got to be the worst matchup I’ve run into by far. You can’t safe jump him. If you jump over a maxout he’ll slide. I can’t find shit that beats his slide from the air. Try to get close he’ll sobat. By far the worst match I have run into. It seems like it’s 9-1 unless someone knows a jump-in that can beat that slide.

Sobat is unsafe as fuck on block and the EX version runs out of invulnerable frames way before it hits. Slide can be empty jumped and I’m pretty sure it’s a free SPD even on tip block. If he has meter I’d go for MP/HP SPD and CD fairly close to him after knockdown. If I’m wrong just smack him for jumping away at tip block… If Hawk gets within normal range he can play the footsie game with DJ well imho. Be careful crossing him up because EX Up Kick will probably beat out anything you do unless the timing is horribly screwed up.

Edit: Also avoid using CD as much as possible, unless you’ve got a really good read on your opponent (You should be doing that in every single match anyway, but whatever). It loses for free to slide, Up Kicks, s.MP and j.LP at the very least.

Ya I rarely use condor dive, far too unsafe unless I can predict a fireball or something. Never thought about empty jumping him, that sounds like a good strategy, keep forgetting SF4 has that trip guard that should make them think twice about sliding.

Any advice or tips for dealing with Ryu and Ken? I’ve found myself using Hawk less and less due to, in my experience anyway, the horrible matchups vs those two. I lose more often than winning against them. And since online’s flooded with them, well, suffice it to say I get really frustrated with Hawk and start playing someone else(usually Sakura or Cammy).

Standard Hawk tricks just don’t seem to work well, or at all against them. I’ve had no success with any Condor Dive tricks, if I try to crossup with it I eat a DP, and if I try land in front of them they dash forward and punish. The crossup on knockdown game is almost non-existent too due to button masher wakeup DP’s that nullify any attempts. Or am I jumping too soon or too late? Best I’ve done before giving up on crossups is trade with the J.D+HP splash.

Can’t seem to land any Typhoon’s on them at all either. Can’t get close or even if I do on a knockdown and Hawk’s arms are moving to grab them, I still get cut off by a wakeup DP. And in Ken’s case, if he whiffs a DP and I try to punish with a Typhoon, somehow the button mashers are able to land and instantly throw out another DP before Hawk can grab them. Maybe it’s just me, but after getting stuffed like that, it just feels to me like Hawk’s grab speed is slower than 'Giefs.

All of that is of course, not counting all the lamers online that turtle up in the corner tossing fireballs, which can be real hard to overcome. I should also note that I don’t use the Condor Spire at all, and it’s not by choice. I’m a pad player, 360 to be specific, and a full, non-shortcut standard or reverse DP motion is incredibly hard to do on the 360’s dpad on a consistent basis(on mine anyway). I CAN do it, but even in the training room it takes a couple tries before a Spire comes out. So obviously trying to pull one out in an actual match turns into a guessing game. So I opt not to use it until I get a stick. I realize that might be handicapping myself, but what can I do?

tips for ryu/ken:
-If you block a dp, or they whiff it, they should be eating an spd sandwhich everytime. This goes double for ken, if hes afraid to dp, hes pretty much neutered. Try standing near a knocked down ken then as soon as he starts wakeup block his predictable wakeup dp and punish accordingly.
-At distance, try neutral jumping to bait some fireballs. Or neutral jumping over their fireballs, the second you see them startup for another fireball while your airborne, its condor time.
-Blocked Hurricane kicks = free spd’s
-Ducked hurricane kicks = Free cr.hp
-On knockdown, Play it safe, Dont go for the standard Bodysplash->mp->EX tomahawk->EX Condor. Just do Body splash->cr.hp instead. That way if they make your crossup attempt, you arent eating a dragon punch and your still in their face, where they have to deal with you on your terms.
-If they are throwing out DP’s willy nilly at stupid ranges, punish the dp with a late condor dive.
-once they stop dragon punching, you’ve basically won.
-When you knocked down, watch closely , if they are anywhere near you I recommend ex-tomahawk just to gtfo.

Thats all the advice I can give you without condor spire…but there are two other things you should know:
1.Lose the 360 Pad, they are beyond trash, you dont have to go to stick to be good, there are good pads out there… the 360 one just isnt one of them.
2.You can do non-shortcut dp’s on a 360 pad, just takes practice. Is it worth the time spent? I dunno…I doubt it…
3. those online lamers that turtle up should be condor food. vary the timing of your condor dive to destroy them. they usually only aa on JUMP , not on dive so you jump, wait for them to dp, THEN condor dive, and they get knocked out of their dp, and suddenly your too close for fireballs, so they usually go for dp, which you block and punish. same thing works on scrub codys, sagats…basically any scrubby projectile users…cept guile…thats a whole nother thing…

GC76, I think you already know the problem. It’s just you. If you can’t do a move then you need more practice. I think that’s the most obvious way to tell. I know the motion for CS is strict, but You have to use every tool your character has to be successful.
