You definately can punish it with st.HK
Most likely the Blanka player was using MP ball. It’s hard to tell whether they’re using the FP or MP ball up close.

I would always use sweep to get the UKD. unless an extra 30dmg will kill them or the extra stun will dizzy them.
I would like to knock him down with Sweep, but I don’t see how I could capitalize on it when Blanka’s wake up options appear to beat Hawk clean.
Unless I’m missing something.
How do you approach a Blanka you knocked down?
Well not much works like you know. Try safe jumping with j.RH that’s about it. Sometimes I jump over him like I will try splash but do it late so when he reversal ex up ball it just flies away. Or if he wake up ultra1 just dive to safety. Makes him waste it. That’s about all you can do. Standing in front of him just out of throw range and lp.spd him if he is prone to electricity on wakeup. I try to play Balrog for that match when necessary.
lotta good stuff throughout this thread. very informative thank you =D
Hungbee and I played the mirror match for about… 20(20?) games it was really interesting… T.Hawks wakeup in the mirror is really… bad…lol
It was not terrible but its very hard for hawk to deal with himself. A lot of our matchs also went to the “wire” which was good I guess? The problem that I was noticing is that the first knockdown is almost irelevant. A lot of games where I would get the knockdown first and the damage lead would get negated when HE knocked me down in the late game. I remember one game where I had him down to a pixel and I was at 90% and he turned it around and one the match on one knock down and 3 right guesses and a dizzy.
The ultra use was interesting. In thorey and in practice, Ultra 2 should be good. The more I was playing the more I realized (IN MY OPINION) the ultra choice almost did not matter between the two of us. We ended up both using ultra 1 in the end.
Universally dont let hawk jump for free or youll get BODDDDDIIIEEEEDDDDDDD. So many times I would watch hung jump and go “oh ha der der ok” and get blown up. Be careful for bait anti-airs though because he caught me on that… If you control the air space and keey thawk grounded and make sure you dont get knocked down (EASY RIGHT!?) You should be ok.
A thing to identify, however, is if you are playing the player or the character; If you are playing the character than I think standard anti-grappler technology applies.
nice stuff joe!.
thanks
I played a good set with MarlinPie on XBL last night (probably around 15-20 games).
Against his Yun it was even. We went 3-3 I believe. It’s a really boring matchup that requires lots of patience and you also have to be really good at being in the corner and not getting anxious when you’re in the corner. I think the match is definitely 5-5.
He 4-0’d me with his Viper. I used to think that was a good match for Hawk, now I feel that it is definitely even. One thing I learned in this set was to never test Marlin’s reactions. He did c.mk > sjc ultra on reaction to whiff punish a spire.
Against Cammy it was also even, though I think he only picked Cammy twice. That match is a pain but it’s definitely easier than it was in Super.
It was a really good set and I definitely learned a lot from it. I’m going to a tournament tomorrow so I’ll hopefully do well.
MarlinPie plays me…a lot… sorry about that…
Lol no worries. It was a good set and I learned lots from it.
So I went to the tourney on Saturday and I went 2-2. I did better than last time (I went 1-2 last time) but I should have done a lot better. My nerves got the best of me. It sucks not being able to go out to casuals IRL (no car and I live 40 minutes from any scene) to be able to get my nerves more solid.
I lost to a Guy player (who is probably the best Guy in Toronto) and a Ken. I feel like I should have beat both of them though. I kept making execution errors like I missed c.mk > spd under Guy’s bushin flip grab 6 times. That’s a ton of unnecessary damage that I did not need to take. Against the Ken I was thinking ahead of myself and was making poor decisions that led to my loss. I’m gonna keep trying to level up though and make it out to one more tournament this summer (T12 which is sort of like the Canadian Nationals).
Though the Guy player (he also plays Honda) said I was really good. He said that before he fought me, he had never had any real troubles against Hawk players and that I was a really solid player. It’s always good to hear that your hard work isn’t going into you being a shitty player lol.
So yeah, I’m gonna keep leveling up. My goal is to make top 3 again by the end of the year.
any tips against the guy match up? i really dunno how to fight against him e when punish
I just wanted to add that in the Bison matchup listing - although it does mention s.mk as being good against scissors, I wanted to stress this even more. If you get Bisons that are being way too agressive on the ground, i.e. scissors, slides, whatever, and that bison pressure starts mounting, a few s.mk will shut down and stuff the SHIT out of overly aggressive dictators, and guys who play like that generally have no answer once you’ve shutdown their standard pressure.
Stuff em, chase em around while they are confused and fuck em up a bit, then when they regain composure let them try their standard pressure again and eat more s.mk’s. It’s very rewarding when you hit it three times in a row and it stuffs the fuck out of everything they do, you can practically see the question mark over their head, and when you see it - destroy. I am sure there are holes in this at the professional level because I am no expert but it also does work pretty often, and what the hell - its great for laughs. No matter how deep the competition is I want to always be able to laugh and enjoy myself. That’s always been part of playing Thawk to me, the insane amount of fun he offers, especially when someone fucks up and you take half their health for the win. Palm skull. Spin cycle. Boom. Huuah.
What are some tools I need to be using against Abel?
I haven’t been playing enough Able’s consistenly so I’m still trying to learn the matchup.
Oh and tools needed against Guy.
Abel- Knock him down…go crazy
Haha, yeah pretty much.
Weird stuff I noticed against an online Honda.
FP Spire went over his headbutt. I’m pretty sure I saved this replay and will upload footage.
LP Spire traded with his U1.
Both of these occurred full screen so however that works…
Learn the option Selects for Abel and he is pretty free. Like Joe said.
T.Hawk eats most abel. Ryder stopped bicking Abel vs me for Adon so… Idk what that says about my t.hawk or the matchup
It’s hard to beat you if you rage quit before they can count the wins though. I guess you thought no one was watching.
For the record, I’m just busting your chops. I randomly saw the stream and you were playing some Abel so I watched for a second. Cracked me up when you rage quit at the end.
