stand forward. arguably one of the best pokes in the entire game. abuse that against ken until he wises up.
Both Stand and Crouch Forward is like by Far Hawks Best move and one of the best in the game. Its like Kens from 3S
Doesn’t seem like it would go out far enough to beat Ken’s MK…
I’m gonna be testing it in a few minutes against the guy. We’ll see.
It does.
No change. Only difference is occasionally I can anti-air him now. Forward MK still kills me and nothing is fast enough to beat it.
Standing MP doesn’t reach. Low MK is too slow. Standing HK is too slow.
ahem

Here. I recorded my match with my friend’s Ken. This is how it usually goes between us. Sometimes I can get close to winning but I haven’t once beat his Ken a full match.
Oh and standing MP doesn’t really work unless I predict that he’s going to use MK. Once he’s already stuck it out there it’s much too late. Look at round one of match #2. The whole time I’m getting pelted by those normals I was trying desperately to find any normal I could that would beat him but I just kept getting stuffed.
I rarely find opportunities to throw him, he just stays airborne most of the time and nothing beats him in the air either. Sometimes DF MP will work, although I didn’t use it in this video…
In the third and final match I fight my brother’s Bison and have no problems. Funny thing is, the guy who plays Ken can’t beat my brother’s Bison for the life of him. It really just shows that it is a problem with the match up… either that or he has me totally figured out and he knows everything I’m going to do before I do it… in which case I don’t know how I’ll ever beat him.
Can anyone give me some advice on what I’m doing wrong besides just sometimes not punishing with max damage or occasionally screwing up inputs? Do I just really suck at T.Hawk? Should I quit and go back to Vega?
Neutral Jump strong if you can predict jumps. Standing forward beats every shoto normal clean besides cr.strong and st.strong. not standing medium punch. standing forward kick. He jumps ALOT. bait it and fp dp it. you have to do it early and cant do it deep.
One thing I noticed is that you’re giving him too much respect when f.MK whiffs or is blocked. Hell, at close range it’s - 2 on block meaning free MT if you react fast enough. Work towards learning the ranges where it’ll be safe/+ on block, unsafe on block, and whiff on Hawk. Don’t be afraid of messing up while trying to punish it on whiff or block, that’s part of what casuals are for.
Also the reason Hawk’s s.MK is such a good normal isn’t its range, it’s that it controls the area it covers pretty damn well (A somewhat similar case is Makoto’s s.MP, if you’re familiar with it), and the area is somewhat of a weak spot of shotos when it comes to normals. Being able to use it properly will come with practice (Not in training mode, in actual matches) and exp.
One last thing, if you feel somebody has “figured you out” then the solution is to consciously and intelligently change what you’re doing.
Well I tried what you guys said with no better results… seriously I want to set up some sort of match between him and you guys to see how you would handle him.
Standing MP just does not work guys, I’m sorry it just doesn’t. Every time I press the button I get a kick in the gut because his f.MK started up a split second earlier. Either that or he just ducks and uses crouching MK to hit my feet while I’m doing the standing MP. (How do you punish a blocked crouch MK, you can’t right?) I can’t throw him after a blocked f.MK because he’s not stupid enough to do that move unless it is at max range so he can’t be punished.
I’m at my wits end…
K so for the third time: Use stand FORWARD. not MEDIUM PUNCH. stand FORourWARD. MEDIUM KICK. FORWARD KICK. MEDIUM KICK. they are the same. they are not a punch button. STAND FORWARD BEATS ALL SHOTO POKES FREE except their crouch and stand medium punch.
next fight night, ill play our local ken hopefully on stream/recorded so you can see how the match goes. and he aint no bum thats for sure
Agh. Okay. MK then I’ll try that. Don’t know why I wasn’t reading that properly.
I’ll be interested to see your video, but unless your opponent plays like the guy I’m having trouble with I don’t know how much it will help.
I can beat other random Kens online pretty easy it seems… cuz they don’t do what he does. Poke, poke, poke, jump back kick. poke, poke, poke, jump in kick/crossup, tick throw.
The ken I play is a rushdown ken who is incredibly smart.
Gridman could you bring a video camera or phone camera and have someone record the match? If it’s not streamed of course
Ken can’t do shit against Standing Forward. Hell if you know the spacing Crouching Forward beats fireballs on startup.
Ok so I’m abit new to grapplers, been playing Vega since vanilla was released. But just switched to Hawk and I’m having trouble with a few matchups (Blanka/Honda/Guile is shitty aswell but i found info on those here)
1: Ryu. How do you deal with cr.mk? It outranges hawks cr.mk by like 1 pixel and i haven’t found any other move that beats it.
2: Balrog. It seems like all his pokes outrange Hawks and are faster, plus he can always lp dash punch randomly. I have a hard time staying on him because of his fast pokes. I end up eating way too many of them by the time i finally get in. Ex rush punches up close is a nuisance aswell.
Honestly keep up Vega, works consider Hawk has some butthole matchups =/.
Answers in Italics.
With all matchups you just have to play them a lot and then you will start to see what works. Its hard to say what works because even though certain moves help against certain matchups, playing the matchup will help you understand it better than a Forum warrior telling you.
Stand forward beats shotos cr.forward.
Neutral Jump a lot against rog. If he straights you land and 360 him and os him for free all day. If he catches on and uses dashupper neutral jump fierce. Dont be afraid to dive at him too. Make sure he knows its going to be a guess each time you jump. Dont get in the corner. Block a lot. You can regular throw his ex dashes that are badly spaced.
This is awesome… He said it like 20 million times and still barely anybody reads it. LOL.
Against blanka you can meaty him, and meaty jump in on him for free on wakeup if he doesn’t have EX (EX upball wins). You can stuff his electricity and normal upballs on wakeup. Also you can spam cr. LP when the match starts, from about that range. It will beat his command dash forward, and trade/win with his df. HP and horizontal ball. I don’t play much with t hawk though, so I don’t know exactly what t hawk can do. Just work him into the corner, but stay kind of away from him if he has EX, cuz he will probably EX upball out. If you predict it and stay back you can probably hit him with a far poke.
Also against ken, will condor spire beat his cr. MK? I play with DJ, and his LK sobat has low invincibilty, so that’s what I do when I predict a cr. MK, such as after a f. MK. Also maybe you can EX spire/EX grab through a bad spaced cr. MK xx fireball?
