Ryu was nerfed because when played defensively he destroys the low tier characters in Super. His escape tatsu and cr.mk were so good at keep away that they were nerfed. People complained that Super/Vanilla were too defensive in their gameplay style, so Capcom nerfed the fuck out of defensive play for AE. I’m glad some stuff is gone in AE but they nerfed too many characters too harshly. Esp Ryu, Guile and Honda.

Unfortunately, there had not been too many AE Ryu vids online, and most of them that do, don’t show the nerf at all. So if you wanna know how it looks like, do a backwards air tatsu before AE and that should give you an idea how it looks like.
Neways back to the issue of Ryu not so great in AE. One thing I think that AE Ryu still has is his normals aside from his cr.MK which has been nerfed to hell, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t still be played well in high levels, only just difficult. So I say why not kick up the game a notch? utilise his hado in FADC combos?
Such as Cr.MK > Hado > FADC > CR.HP > Tatsumaki
Last I checked, his ground tatsu hasn’t changed that much. I know it might not be practical and that it might backfire but adding another dimension to Ryu’s game might help a bit.
Anyone else can suggest another way to fully utilise Ryu’s basic tools?
Ryu can be play at the highest level but you need to master lot of stuff:
You need to be able to do:
-Solars plexus, c.hp xx srk, FADC, ultra close to 100%
-100% on c.mp, c.hp xx srk punish
-Confirm a Super out of a c.mk
-be able to confirm out of c.mp
-be able to confim a FADC from c.mk xx hado
-master OS, frame traps and safe jumps
-amazing anti-air
-know character specific punish like c.mp, c.mp, c.mk xx tatsu
etc
Yes Ryu can still be very strong but all his tools have to be optimized.
Cant get away playing a linear Ryu and have success like in Vanilla.
I agree with FailedOne. I’m not dropping Ryu, I almost beat my friend’s Yun the other day.
His C.MP>C.HP can be linked to alot of things which is good but it’s a hard link for me. You can hado after that fadc c.hk. Or Ex tatsu. Whatever high damaging combo you can think of.
One thing my other friend suggested after an untechable knockdown C.LK C.LK C.LP right before they wake up. You do two c.lks to make sure you hit confirm so you can combo. If they try to srk or do something they’ll get hit, they have to block low. I’m not 100% positive it’ll work everytime but it has been working for me and i’ve be streakin like 6 wins in a row with that the last time.
To be honest, I didn’t think the Ryu C.mk nerf was game breaking, but Yun and Fei Long are completely OP. Ryu vs Fei Long match up is completely fucked… once you get in the corner he’ll just Rekka you till you die, no more air tatsu to escape. Either way, Ryu is definitely middle tier now.
Can’t really zone him out like u could with gief. Ryu has no way out in this match now. He doesn’t deal enough damage with T Hawks high HP.
Ryu can fight the twins, it’s his other matchups that he went even or had an advantage with are just horrid now (Gief, Fei, Makoto, Bison)
Well another thing that Ryu players have in their mindset is saving EX meters. Well, that is just not going to work in AE, cos most of the tools needed to get out are gone now so that means if we have to spend meter to get out, then why not? WE NEED TO GET OUT THE HABIT OF SAVING METER JUST FOR THE SAKE OF SHORYU > FADC TO ULTRA 1. Many people will expect it, so why not mix it up by spending meter when we can? Besides its not like his towards st. HP won’t give him meter, even if the damage is nerfed. For being trapped in the corner, EX tatsu wil NOW HIT ALL 5!!! Why not use that if we manage to hit gief in a combo? Will send him flying and we’ll walk free? I swear guys, we need to stop listening to top player for their opinion only, because they all have one mindset of playing Ryu and it isn’t gonna cut out anymore!!!
Anyone with access to AE machines, can please try this mindset a bit? By mixing up Ryu’s game abit rather than playing “automatic mode” with him now. I would but I have exams comin up. Sorry!!! XP
^ I’m not going to even comment about this one. Oh what the hell =x As a Ryu player I like to use meter to get out of sticky situations. It’s not like I try to save it for super, if i have super even better. But what Air, if you don’t have any meter you won’t get respect. Meter management is key in order to win matches or why the hell else do we do it. It’s always good to have at least one or two, so at least your a threat. My friend uses c.mp c.mp ex tatsu, if you want to burn meter, i think is a good frametrap and does good damage.
Well you got me there, so thats out the window for the moment. Still something to think about. C’mon, what else can we do with Ryu, to make him less predictable and get people to think more about his strategy. hmmm…
Well, I’m out of ideas… So I’ll throw in the towel for now and experiment with him again once I can.
Yeah randomly block an ex tatsu which puts him in perfect range in getting a jab spd… That match ur almost better off saving meter unless ur doing them crispy links.

You can kinda immitate it on super. Go into training mode jump towards and do a light kick tatsu as your reaching the arc of the jump… that’s how far the hard kick one travels now. I’ll go to the arcade tomorrow and post a video of it. I’m pretty there are a few though. I used Ryu’s Air Tatsu to punish Bison’s head stop that option is gone now. His Solar Plexus strike damage makes it not worth trying it because it has such a slow start up.
Ken’s Kara EX Tatsu is even more difficult to punish than Ryu’s floating tatsu. He still has it. “Ryu does NOT seem as bad”… have you PLAYED with him? Overall nerf of projectiles? What in blue hell are you talking about? Ryu’s Hadoken wasn’t nerfed at all. The nerf that sucks the most for Ryu is his low forward being nerfed. It has less active frames, is much more easily punished, and doesn’t hit as far out anymore. Also, Ryu is not simply a “zone” character. Ryu’s a balanced character, that’s supposed to be equally good in all respects. Ken is not better in AE because “he’s a rushdown character”. Ken is better because they buffed him and nerfed Ryu. They gave Ken links to sweep, which was one of the only things Ryu had that Ken didn’t. And with the changes made to the rest of the cast, on top of his nerfs, most of his hard matchups got harder or stayed the same, most of his easier matchups got harder, and many characters are now far better than him, including his shoto counterparts in Ken and Akuma. Probably Evil Ryu too. Not to mention the addition of a character that’s STUPID good (Yun).
Ryu IS terrible in AE. Air Tatsu nerf means that he has no way out the corner. c.MK nerf means that his footsies are fairly crappy now. Thankfully, the game’s not so unbalanced that you can’t pull out wins with him, and I’ll continue to keep on trucking and doing what I can. But it honestly is to the point where you may as well play another character if you want to win. I tried out Yun last night. He’s so easy to dominate with I had to ask myself WTF is the point of this game anymore.
The low forward nerf really is heart breaking.
Low forward nerf is not as bad as everyone is making it seem. I was playing on Sunday at Round1 Arcade and I couldn’t even feel the difference.
Probably everyone is focused on that one matter on its own, that it becomes the focus of Ryu’s Downfall. Think people are saying how one nerf can destroy a game plan that ryu has. Yes, it no longer a defensive poke now, but we can still use it for the combos he has and that means people will have to relearn him an adopt a better strategy and plan for him now. For now we just have to live the fact that even though Ryu is a good character, it just is harder to win with him in a rushdown focused game in AE.
Although I have this hunch that they might rebalance after EVO is down. Who knows? I don’t.
A few questions about Ryu in AE
Can Ryu still jump in from afar with air tatsu and can Ryu go under burn kick with c.mk?
I don’t know why people complain about ryu being worse when almost everyone got nerfed. The nerfs just balance out imo for some matchups and the only matchup I can think of that’s going to be worse is geif and maybe t.hawk.
I think as long as you do Air Tatsu at the peek of his jump or a little after you still get some distance. Also, C.MK definetly still goes under burning kicks, I don’t see why it wouldn’t.
