SSF4 AE Ryu

With the changes i just do not see how he can be that much worse. I a scrub so what do I know? I still think he will be viable just not as easy.

Nothing Daigo said had to do with Ryu getting worse. He just didn’t get much better, while several non projectile characters got big buffs.

anyone around here read japanese?

Even that was pretty vague… I read all the character changes but it really does seem like they did NOT announce them all, with people finding new things in the last 2 days now that AE is out.

Like I’ve said elsewhere, I really hope that at the very least they up Ryu’s close game to help him deal with in-your-face, RTSD characters like Yun and Mak. Maybe the changes to some of his normals will make a lot more sense then.

Why would they nerf his cr.forward?? That’s been his main poke ever since SF2. sigh Geez atleast make it 4 frames like Ken. But I bet it’s 3 frames like Akuma.

It’s unbelievable what they have done to him. And he was never top tier.

In vanilla he had ton’s of 5-5 matchups. In Super he had more 4-6 matchups. Now it’s worse??

Isn’t 5-5 matchups what you want in a game.

I agree with an earlier post. Vanilla felt kinda like SF2 and that’s why I liked it. Now it seems they want to bring back a SF3 feel, getting rid of projectiles. Why? SF3 was garbage.

Thanks Ono for finally proving you weren’t the man for the job.

SF3 Ryu was infinitely more interesting than his SF2 counterpart. Still, it’s impossible for SF3 Ryu to be placed in SSF4… in SSF4 where the Third Strike characters will be king, Ryu can only drop since he can’t bring his Third Strike style to this game. No big stun combos, nice super meter gain, wall kick juggles + jab reset/semiunblockables, EX fireball pressure… and so forth.

I’ll still play him and Abel. But Blazblue is getting more intersting now so whatever.

Just ran a couple games w/ Ryu on AE today. Here’s some notes outside of the stuff we know:

  • Trying to escape w/ jumping hurricane starts out like it normally did, then suddenly travels straight downward.

  • Also trying to get in on an opponent full screen with jumping hurricane no longer works. However, you can now use the timing you would normally use in this situation as a viable jump in as it shortens the trajectory of your jump for some really neat tricks and mind fucking of your opponent.

  • in the corner, close roundhouse links into crouching strong (which of course, links to whatever you want)

  • they didn’t just take away active frames from c mk, the animation is now much faster. Ryu will pull back his kick much earlier making it harder to punish when whiffed. It makes his c mk look like it comes out faster, but i think that may be an illusion.

  • the nerf to the f HP damage wasn’t dramatic enough for me to really notice in the heat of battle.

overall, I still felt very comfortable with Ryu. And I still think he’s better than Ken.
feel free to ask any more questions

+4?!?!? Christmas has come early for me.

Have you seen cl.HK into SRK?

How it work, only corner or everywhere?

What about the dhalsim and Blanka matchups? Has it gotten any better?

S HK links into SRK mid screen for one hit. it definitely has its uses

Played a little today myself.

c.mk nerf is really not that bad. But it changes some things. For one, you can’t just stick it out freely for people to run into anymore, it’s more of an offensive poke it seems. Everything else is the same about it-- it ducks jump ins with the right timing and all that jazz.

S. HK combos I didn’t get a chance to try… but far standing medium punch combos don’t seem all that necessary yet for me. Maybe against Dictator or a few other cast members for whom it stops approaches.

The Yun and Yang matchups: Not that bad. Not really bad at all. Yun can go through fireballs and has some nice divekick pressure, but for some odd reason it doesn’t feel nearly as bad as Rufus or Cammy pressure. It seems like Yun’s defensive options aren’t that great. EX Upkicks is nice, but if you get in on him, it’s the same old story for Ryu.

Yun’s a very strong character with big damage, but so far it seems pretty even. However, Meter building is so stupidly easy with him, and he can negate your fireballs pretty nicely, so thats a pain. But otherwise, it’s all fundamentals.

Run away Hurricane kick is dead, we know. So is jump across the screen hurricane kick. Cross up hurricane kick feels more ambiguous now. It’s pretty nice.

Anyway, twas fun playing. I’m gonna finish up my documentary now… finally.

Blanka Matchup should be in our favor… Dhalsim matchup should be Dhalsim matchup.

But then again, last time I checked, Blanka was in our favor for regular Super.

I kept on thinking that the duration of his c.mk would be shorted and that it may actually be a buff. If you look at the videos posted so far it basically functions the same way but looks a little faster.

can you do cross up tatsu into ex tatsu(already possible in ssf4 but i’m asking if its easier or not) or srk/ex srk(into fadc?)?

how is standing close strong?

do you hit srk after the 2nd hit of the close roundhouse?

can you sweep after standing strong?

are standing close forward and crouching fierce the same damage?

Dang this is like the opposite of what an Akuma player said in the Akuma forum. I dont know what to believe lol.

^ I asked some, please answer if you can.

ah sorry man but i was playin, and fighting to win

its hard to get those sorts of details in a match, would be easier to get it just in training mode. honestly at the arcade, people weren’t holding back just to try out new stuff/see what buffs/nerfs their characters got. it was just straight into the action, so all my observations were just from what i saw/played on the fly.

‘do you hit srk after the 2nd hit of the close roundhouse?’

i hit srk after the first hit of st.hk. i dont know if it combos off the 2nd hit (i didn’t try)

things like ‘are standing close forward and crouching fierce the same damage?’ i dont know man. its not like in training mode where you can just take ur time and see the damage numbers and stuff. the more time i look at the health bar comparing the damage of each move, the less i’m looking at my opponent…

sorry i couldnt answer ur questions

however, overall i feel ryu is pretty much the same. i think he wont move a whole lot in the tier, still feels very solid and still does lots of damage if you know what to do.

Can you link anything other than a SRK and Tatsu after a st.hk? Any normals? And if so are they corner only? I’m asking a lot but I live in London and I never know when I’m gonna get the chance to find out for myself.
