I can finally do it!
My matches against Chris Tatarian (Ken) and TA Moons (Rolento).
How come you use ultra 1 against ken? Against which other shotos do you use Ultra 1?
I’m old school. I never use ultra 2. I just feel comfortable with ultra 1 only. Plus, I rarely use Ultra’s any ways.
Can you guys critique my gameplay? I’m having lots of trouble against my friends Ken, what’s the proper way to deal with air tatsu mixups and Ken in general as Guile?
Some notes:
- Too much jumping from both of you. If you look at his jump timing, he actually guess jumps a ton and you are always busy doing stuff. You need to be patient, recognize that he’s ‘just doing it’ and anti-air his yolo jumps with normals like st.mk if you don’t have flash kick charge. On the other hand, you jump in unnecessarily all the time right into the range in which you do not want to be in (ie right in his face) which brings me to:
- You spend too much time in his face and little time actually trying to zone and keep him away from you. Sonic Boom more at close range and back away so that you can stay out of kara-throw and step-kick threat range.
- Be mindful of your life-lead, remember he has to come to you when you have the lead.
- Crossup EX tatsu is not easy to see, the last round was just hard to block really… you can just try to anticipate he is going for EX tatsu and change your block direction at the last second rather than trying to react to it.
- If you are constantly being harrassed by jump-ins, you can just jump-back hk to get yourself out of the situation and create distance. If he jumped, he gets hit, if not, you’re out anyway and can continue booming.
- Also seems you like doing c.lk, st.lk, st.lp, st.hp string… which is fine… but you might as well go for c.lk, c.lp st.hp or at least work towards c.lk, c.lp, c.mp xx boom / flash kick
Here’s a few moments broken down by time…
0:34 should have anti-aired with st.mk
0:39 guess jump, could’ve anti-aired with c.hp
0:46 you just got him off you and finally had breathing space then you decided to put yourself in danger in with a yolo j.lk
0:49 Another questionable jump unless this was on reaction to the focus release, either way you jumped in with j.lk rather than j.hk, pressed too high in the air to combo anyway and actually dp punishable if he blocked it
0:56 you need to wait a bit for him to crumple to his knees before GHK will hit
1:02 you have the life lead but insisted on walking forward on a cornered knocked down Ken with 3 bars and Ultra 1 stock. Super risky and you deserved to eat the DP, should’ve actually died from FADC U1 if the Ken was better.
1:32 you failed to anti-air c.hp
1:43 super unsafe sweep that was luckily unpunished
1:46 AGAIN super yolo jump in for no reason then Ken got a lucky focus crumple on you which turned everything around
2:12 Not bad timing to UDK , but the backfist was super risky which was followed by another yolo jump that he failed to AA
2:37 I probably would’ve pressed st.hp too but actually st.mk would’ve worked here
After this he just killed you with super hard to see EX tatsus so fair enough.
I did two FT5 sets vs this guy, got completely outplayed both times
I did spar vs ladnopoka and TR Sheva’s Cody quite often in the past and thought I would know the match up, but it seems like I was wrong
GGs to him
Thanks for playing & good games @ gagapa
I only have to ask a few questions after watching the first two matches…
- Where are the anti airs? Your main AA’s should be backhand, st.mk, st.hp, Cr. Hp. Most of his jump ins (he rarely jumped in but when he did) were from far range.
- You jumped in alot against him. There should never ever be a reason for you to jump in on Cody. Walk him down if you have to.
- Why the constant abusing of Upside Down Kick? He never showed any signs of going for lows at all. Even when you did land a jump in hard kick, instead of confirming into a combo you went directly into upside down kick. The only time I can see the Upside Down Kick actually being effective against Cody is when you have him in a defensive playstyle. Judging from what I’ve seen, no reason was given for him to even block.
- Not once did I see you punish one of his blocked tornado punches. Capitalize on those punishes. Flashkick them! Cody’s mostly go for lows. Stand blocking against him should only be done when expecting an overhead which is usually done far and few. Downback always when facing Cody.
IMO, this is one of those match ups that change according to the spacing. Guile wins this match up from far to mid range (almost making it a 7-3 in his favor) but once Cody gets any closer, it changes into his favor extremely hard.
Just my two cents.
Lastly, you didn’t get outplayed. You killed yourself in those matches.
2nd spotlight. Check it out.
Check out this Guile vs Pepeday at the Brazilian CPT event yesterday. Great reads and I love the constant air throw attempts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq9-HQm-NUs
