At 1:00, 1:17, and 1:39.

Also, the grandfinals were pretty godlike, stay tuned to watch a high level gief vs. E.ryu

First time playing on stream or anything, I had chances to take it, really shouldn’t have been trying that link in that situation when I never practice on ps3

Doesn’t seem to load for me. nevermind. A few refreshes helped.

Tough break with the dropped combos man. A couple other things though. A lot of times you would chuck a boom and sim would walk forward and slide. Get in the habit of weaving in and out of his slide range and then sweeping it on recovery when he tries to go under the boom. Also, too many close jab punishes for teleports. You could have beaten him with the damage from using s.hp instead alone. It still puts him in a mixup situation too.

The jab punishes were dumb, I usually always go for a fierce, not sure what I was thinking there. This was an awesome tournament, my first match was against Justin.

Ouch, how’d you do? I could only manage to take a couple rounds off of him. No matches.

When unsure of teleports, using jab was just right in my opinion. Think you did an awesome job against that Dhalsim.

Oh wow, I see the punish opportunities with sweep to his slide, man that would have been huge

You know, the thing is, you can gauge teleports in terms uncertainty. If I throw a bad boom, I’ll still be able to block, or I’ll s.lp. Most of the teleports done here were just naked. We’re talking a 2 frame difference in the startup between s.lp and s.hp… there’s just no excuse to pick the 30(?) damage normal over the 120 damage normal.

I DO use s.lp to tap a bad teleport, but ONLY when it’s done in a situation where i’m worried about how fast it was.

I agree. He played well against afro, but it didn’t net him the win. Using s.hp would have.

@cities: Oh ya. Sweeping slides is CRAZY important against everyone with a slide. Rose, Dhalsim, and Ibuki in particular. If you watch the vid I linked during the Ibuki match, a lot of the time when I wasn’t doing anything and just walking back whiffing normals, I was trying to bait a slide so I could sweep it.

I picked up on it while watching some stuff from Dieminion a few months ago.

I was getting bodied last night by an Ibuki and he told me after that my downfall was not sweeping his slides or using sonic boom in such a way as to force him to jump/slide/block and then actively look to punish the slide. He said when he plays against Gameouttt, his slides get swept all the time and it really shuts down a lot of his pressure.

thanks slinkun Any tips?

Well, I happened to lose to OctopusOnFire too, not sure if I told you. I happened to take the first match very convincingly as well as the following round. At match point I had the guy down to chip health and I had about 1/3 health left. I got thrown into the unblockable, combo’d then thrown a couple more times. I was pretty pissed. After that he just adapted very well.

Octopus plays Blanka real weird. For a blanka that doesn’t really use reaction slides, it should be easy, but… it’s… not?

I’ve always hated the blanka matchup, but theoretically, it should be about getting the life lead, holding down-back, and just straight reacting to everything he does. A couple things I noticed is that it’s strangely easier to “tap block” blankas unblockable (back throw > hop > j.mk) than other unblockables, but you definately can’t hold the direction.

Other than that, I hate the Blanka matchup. It’s just strange and annoying. I need to hit up the lab and figure out just how much advantage that guy has after various normals cancelled into hop, because frankly, I felt like I should have been poking him out of stuff or teching throws but I was just getting hit with EVERYTHING!

Well enough of my rant. As for your match I think that at it’s core it all comes down to that life lead business. However, outside of that, there’s a few things there that need to get fixed.

1: Sweep those whiffed slides. You let him get away with that WAY to much.
2: Know your punishes and especially when you CAN’T punish. Any heavy or medium ball should be tagged with a backfist, hp boom, ex boom, or U2. EX ball can ONLY be hit with a reversal EX boom and ONLY if you block it standing. If you block it crouching, just toss an LP boom and dash up for some screen control. I think the same rule applies for LP ball, but you can also flashkick it on reaction.
3: Know your gimmicks. At the very end of the last round you could have WON. If you LP boom and blanka does an EX ball and still lands on the boom and EX boom will combo.
4: Tap block the unblockable as mentioned above. Easier than it looks.

Aside from that, there’s a lot of theory fighter going on in my head on this matchup. I think pushing Blanka into the corner by simply walking forward could be a big deal. Blanka’s footsie game is similair to Guile’s in that it relies on a lot of heavy pokes. However, I think Guile is slightly better equipped to genuinely play straight up ST style footsies here. Whiff punishing with s.hp or c.hk could be a big deal in pushing him towards the corner. However, on the flip side, if he gets you to block a far s.mp, he can just cancel into hop and ruin your gameplan pretty reliably.

The “get the life lead and down-back” theory seems solid, but you need to have great reactions to really do it. If he hops forward, c.mp xx boom. If he jumps, AA. If he LP balls, flashkick it. If he does any other ball, punish it. The only thing I feel that you have to worry about is s.mp or c.mk xx hop shenanegins… which should in no way, shape, or form be as effective as they are.

I am going to hit that lab tomorrow and figure some stuff out. This matchup is bull#^$ and if I fight him again, I’m not losing.

Last time i played him was a frosty faustings and i put him out the tournament with guile. no video of it i wish it could of got recorded so then i can give you a insight on what i did to beat him.

After looking at that match vs him i notice he pretty much pressing the right button when i wanted to press a button. When i switched it up on him he kinda didnt have a clue when i was gonna attack and was forced to go into that blanka stuff.

and i ended up getting a run back against kyle and i won. How i played him on monday is how i should of played him on saturday…it was a “slow jamz” session lol

Throw hp boom when Blanka is at half screen. He won’t be able to reaction slide it. Just don’t throw it when he’s 3/4 screen. FA when Blanka is at 3/4 screen walking back and forth. You have enough time to backdash if he hops forward.

Blanka is not a bad matchup for Guile actually. I think if you’re playing a Blanka, then it’s more about beating the player rather than the matchup cos it’s pretty straightforward matchup-wise. I do badly against random Blankas instead of those trying to outfootsie/slide boom Guile.
