To toss my two cents into the translation debate, which is wildly off-topic but something I personally find interesting, the goal of translation should be to emulate as closely as possible the general experience of a native speaker reading the original text, not the explicit detail. Preserving an exact or close-to-exact word-for-word translation of the original text, even if it makes sense as an English sentence, is likely to not give a reader the same impression as the native speaker received from the original text, simply because writing - good writing at least - is not simply about explicit meaning, but subtext, connations and associations.

Translations that don’t bother to localize cultural specifities such as proverbs, instead relying on translator’s notes to explain the text, strike me as incredibly lazy and a real disservice to the original work - in presenting a translation which a reader can not intuitively understand as a native speaker reading the original text would, the communication of meaning from text to reader is stilted. It’s an attitude borne of a belief in the inherent superiority of the original text, which is always going to result in an unnuanced and condescending translation.

Here are quotes from the Japanese arcade version, with translations by myself. I got them from just playing around with the game on an emulator, and I haven’t been able to check if the list is complete, but I guess it should have most of them. I don’t claim to have a perfect grasp on the Japanese language (or anywhere near it), so I’m sure some translations are a bit off, and some of the phrases I wasn’t really able to translate at all. Also, I’m pretty sure some quotes only appear under certain circumstances (vs certain characters, after a particularly even or one-sided match, etc), but unfortunately I didn’t take note of what matches the quotes came from. In any event, here’s the list:

Some of these are hysterical, by the way. Honda asking the other guy to be his fundoshi (that Japanese loinclothy number, for those not in the know) carrier… yikes.

C’mon Sirlin, isnt this suppose to be a new game? stop recycling, why not put new winning quotes? new moves, and bring the good ones back, like Zangief anti Sweeps, Turbo Spinning lariat. and what about all the time that we spent trying to learn how to do a SPD with T. Hawk or Zangief, or learning how to do a tiger knee, its all going down the drain? now everybody is going to be playing Zangief or T. Hawk, because they do a ton of damage, the only thing that kept everybody from picking them was their hard to execute moves, but now u are going to see noobs SPDing you to death, whatch. anyways, going back to the subject, dude put some new stuff in it, new quotes. oh btw, when it is coming out? will it be ready for christmas??? 2011??, j/k

One interpretation for “yoi” can mean “implied meaning”, as in understood but not written, goes without saying, etc. So I left it out. Same with “de” indicating cause of effect. Also I wanted to add that “hitori” could also be pronounced as “ichinin” in the quote’s case, since an Arabic numeral’s used.

But no, Sirlin hadn’t expressed any interest with original quote translations. I provided Gouki’s because between Super Turbo and Turbo Revival, Akuma has only one win quote to go on.

“make” is lose, “senu” is something like “nai,” as in isn’t/doesn’t/won’t. “tomo” is like “tomodachi,” like friend. “katami” means memento or souvenir. “kakete” is like Ryu’s “kakete koi” or Ken’s “kakete kina” from SF3, like to come. Though it can also mean something like by, if it has the “ni” before it. All together Guile’s quote translates to something like:

"With this momento, I won’t lose.“
Or
"I swear by this souvenir from a friend, I won’t lose”

He’s talking about Charlie’s dogtags.

I think it’s uru (??) is ??, like learning. Did it actually say ??, or was it just hiragana?

Anyway, I think the translation is right, though more specifically he’s saying that it would take you a hundred years to learn how to beat him, I think. Or maybe a hundred years to be able to fight like him.

Naze maketa no ka, wakaranai no ka? Omae to wa, seotte iru mono ga chigau no da.

In my version of SSF2 it was ???, I guess in ST they changed it to ???.

I think it’s something like:

You’re wondering why you lost…don’t you understand? You can’t handle being overwhelmed.

I think this one is right too, but maybe more like he’s saying
"a fight with me is merciless. I can’t afford to lose." The ? at the start can mean “with,” so I’m thinking it’s more like he’s saying that fighting him or his fighting with you means that he’ll be ruthless.

I don’t remember which version that was from but I’m pretty sure it was one of the arcade versions WW-ST, maybe an early revision of one of those titles.

So Honda uses “de gowasu”, huh? Interesting. Rikinoshin in Cat Ninden Teyandee uses that too, and he has a really strong sumo motif going on. I wonder if there’s some sort or association or stereotype of sumo wrestlers with that type of speech pattern.

but then I found out, that it was refering to his shoryken, maybe that is why he was wacker ever since SSF2T, since his srk is not invincible anymore

I’ve heard a couple people suggest that a feature in SSF2THD Remix be the ability to create custom victory quotes. Though with this supposedly having online play capabilities, the L33t sp34k would flow. I’d have Guile tongue-lashing me with, “STFU! I pwnz0rr3d j00 f4g kthnx”

Although I’d love to see uncreative people set theirs to “gg”.
