I’m still on with this even though I haven’t been around in a couple days. Wasn’t feeling well Sunday night and then was sick all day Monday. At least it wasn’t the kids, I guess.
I have added the fine print and additional details to the original post. I’ll be sending reminder messages tomorrow.
Please be in the IRC tourney chat room (#hdremix on EFnet) by the posted start time. Signups open until one hour before start time. Matches begin 5 minutes after the posted start time.
How long do these things usually take? I’m on the east coast and 12:30AM is about the latest I can justify playing this til. I have to work at 7 in the morning. That is assuming I even make it past the first round.
In the last tournament, which had 18 players in double elimination, the grand finals match had been determined but not yet played after 90 minutes.
That tournament had a fairly long tail in the losers bracket, partly because of people taking smoke breaks and problems getting a third person connected to do the video recordings. Some of the players also played best-of-5 matches instead of best-of-3.
Unless you make it that far, you’ll be done in less than 75 minutes for sure. One quarter of the players are eliminated after 2 matches, and another quarter are done after 3 matches. Double elimination takes a little time to play out due to the loser’s bracket.
I was also slowed down by having to communicate in two separate chat areas (IRC and PSN). That’s why I want to stick with just IRC this time.
Ideally, this is how the rounds progress for 16 and 32 player double elimination brackets. W is winner’s bracket, L is loser’s bracket. G is for grand finals.
Ah, someone who reads! Yes, I have specified best of three 5-round games for each match. I’m conflicted about that decision because of how long it takes to do things in double elimination. I chose 5-rounds this time because that is what I saw them using in some XBL tourneys. However, a 5-round game runs counter to the keep it simple and use defaults lessons I have learned. After posting the winners/losers timeline the other day (a few posts up from this one), I have thought about going back to best of three 3-round games for all matches.
And so it is: All matches will be best of three 3-round games. The original post has been updated.
IMPORTANT: Two little things, namely my kids, have been disrupting the usual schedule at home. Both were sick last night and stayed home today (1st day of kindergarten for the oldest). Hopefully they will have a good day and have a good night of sleep tonight. If they are needing attention tonight, I’m gonna have to postpone this little ditty til next week. Stay tuned.
Yea…I might have to resign as well. I have a dinner to go to tonight, and I don’t know if I’ll be back home in time for this. So I guess you can put me down for game time decision?
