SRK Photographers Thread Vol. 1

so i’m new to photography and i just got a new camera for christmas. i’ve been trying to watch as many videos and read as much as i can to learn some basics. out of these 2 lenses what one do you prefer? the canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II or the 40 mm EF f/2.8.

The 50mm f/1.8 will give you better low light options, being 1.3 stops faster than the 40mm f/2.8. That said, the 40mm is nice and small, so if portability is key that’s something to consider.

If you’re brand new to photography, I would recommend picking up Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson … check your local library, too, as it’s often available. That’ll get you off to a good start in understanding how to use shutter/aperture/ISO and that kind of stuff.

And pretty much anything regarding composition (be it for photography or classical art forms) will really help you step up your photography beyond just taking snapshots. This is a great presentation on composition, and you should be able to take a lot away from it even as a beginner.

Thanks for the tip. Are their any sites or forums I should check out for tips for beginners?

If you want to pick up on the basics of a manual camera quick, all you need to know is what Shutter speed, ISO and Aperture does. If you understand what happens when a value is changed, there’s not much to really “read up” on then. After that, I’d look at how other people take photos and analyze what makes it different from plain ol’ snapshots.

The only downfall to this methodology is that you simply become a mimicker and cannot create something truly outside of your “box”. Other than the few angles I use for taking photos, my creativity hits a very noticeable plateau.

Any good places online to buy the 50 mm 1.8 lens for canon?

Most legit places are going to have the same, or very similar, prices. Normally an advocate for buying used equipment, but the 50 1.8 is pretty much the cheapest lens you can buy… so used isn’t going to save you much money. B&H is usually my go-to.

High Park last weekend. Cherry Blossoms and shit.

Original res found here.

Yep comments and suggestions welcome. I don’t know what exposure length or ISO I should be using. I tried a bunch of random numbers and just never remember.

KOFKula’s Elgato came in today.

I started posting a FGC pic a day to my facebook page. I already have changes and upgrades planned for 2014, but I’m always looking for more feedback.

I’m in the market for a digital camera, I was wondering if anybody could recommend me a decent digital camera for the outdoors in a hot ass, sunny, and extremely dusty place?

thought about doing a new thread but i found this thread so even when its old i just bump it instead.
